Man, things really have picked up these past couple weeks? I've been busy with work and stuff so I really haven't had time to post my thoughts here on comicbookmovie. At first I was going to post a editorial reacting to the TDKR trailer, and a separate one on the Amazing Spider-Man trailer, but I decided to just combine them, as well as give my thoughts on a couple other random news bits that have caught my attention. So, without further ado, here's a piece of my mind...
Superman: The Man of Steel being delayed until 2013: I gotta say, this didn't really surprise me seeing how just a week prior it was announced that a new screenwriter was brought on. It's usually a pretty bad sign when a screenwriter is brought on just before cameras start to roll, and I was hoping it was just for polishes, but then we find out that the movie has been pushed back several months.
Of course, WB said it was delayed because of the competition, and I do have to agree with that, but I'm sure the script had something to do with it as well. Personally, I take this as a good sign because that means that WB takes this movie seriously and wants to give us a good Superman movie. I wrote an article several months ago stating that we fans deserve a good Superman movie, and I stick by that. With Green Lantern tanking big time, DC needs a good, non-Batman rebound, and this movie could be it. I just hope that the script only needs a few touch ups and nothing major. The June 2013 spot seems like prime real estate when compared to the usually packed Christmas spot, and I would rather have a good Superman movie than a rushed Superman movie.
The Avengers teaser trailer: I suffered many a nerdgasm while watching Captain America: The First Avenger, but I definitely had a major geek out during the after credits Avengers teaser. What we saw was frustratingly brief, but it got us pumped. I hope we get a high quality version this week, because the bootlegs online just aren't doing it for me. I really dig the new costumes for Captain America and Thor, and Hawkeye and Maria Hill look like they've stepped right out of the comics. What really intrigued me was the shot of Loki being escorted by S.H.I.E.L.D guards. How did a god get captured by S.H.I.E.L.D? Is Loki playing them? Or has Loki somehow lost his powers? So many questions, and I'm sure we'll have to wait until next May to find out.
The Amazing Spider-Man trailer: Sigh... I stated in a previous article that nothing I've seen from this movie has gotten me excited. It makes me sad because I like Spider-Man, I'm not a big fan, but I have enough fond childhood memories of the classic Fox Kids cartoon to have an emotional attachment to the character. I was hoping that a trailer would change my opinion of the movie but sadly it only made things worse.
What made me hate the trailer was how hard it tried to make Spider-Man out to be a brooding, damaged superhero. Yes, Spider-Man does have guilt issues, but he doesn't dwell on them like Batman. A couple people I know saw the trailer and said it looks like a teenage Batman movie, and I have to agree. The trailer has Spider-Man moping and brooding over his dead parents, and then finding out that they may have been killed by Oscorp for some reason. I've always liked Spider-Man for how lighthearted he is, and this movie looks like it loses that in favor of a more brooding, teenage angst take on the character.
Another complaint I have, and this is one many people have brought up, is that it seems like we've seen a lot of this movie before. Yes, it has been ten years since the original Spider-Man movie, but its still very fresh in our minds. I get the feeling that audiences will be very bored during the first half of this because we've all seen the origin story already, and we want to see something new. I'm hoping that I'm wrong but right now this movie isn't making the best of first impressions on me.
The Dark Knight Rises trailer Boy, talk about a tease. Most of the reason why I shelled out ten bucks to see Harry Potter was too see this teaser. The little we saw of the movie was enough to get me pumped. We know that for some reason, Bruce Wayne has given up the mantle of the Batman, and it seems that the arrival of Bane in Gotham inspires him to once again take up the cape and cowl. I'm curious to see what happened to Gordon to land him in the hospital, but even more curious about the brief shots we see in the trailer. We get a shot of someone in rags climbing out of a pit, and I'm guessing this is young Bane, seeing how we have reports of Bane climbing out of a flaming pit to confront the young Ras Al Ghul. Another shot that intrigued me is a shot of Bruce Wayne doing push-ups. At first I thought that this was merely a shot of Bruce getting ready for a confrontation with Bane, but upon further inspection it looks like Bruce is in a jail cell or dungeon of some sort, hmmm...
But the final shot was the icing on the cake, of a tired, worn out Batman backing away from Bane. This really intrigued me because it shows Batman in a place we've never seen him before: taken to his physical limit. But as tired as Batman looks, its clear that he's still not giving up, which sums up his character perfectly. And then there's Bane, calmly advancing on Batman, which also sums up his character perfectly. Not only does it make Bane seems much more threatening, but it shows how he thinks that he has Batman right where he wants him. I've stated in previous articles that Bane could be a villain that we fear more than Joker, and judging from this trailer, that could be the case.
I really can't wait until we get an extended teaser for this movie, which I'm predicting will be with Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in December. But until then, I'm happy with what little I've seen.
