The Master of Magnetism!!!

The Master of Magnetism!!!

Who better than a master amongst actors to portray this character?

On more than one occasion this actor has proven to intensify any performance on screen! So much so that i was actually rooting for him at the oscars even if i hadn't even seen Pollock! He was brilliant in many films but a few can't go unmentionned. Apollo13, Abys, Glengarry Glen Ross, A beautiful Mind, Appaloosa and of course, my own favorite: Brigadier General Francis X. Hummel, USMC in "The Rock".

Althought Ian McKellen brilliantly portrayed the leader of the brotherhood of mutants in the three first films, it will require someone slightly younger in the character's upcomming solo film. Since we know that Magneto helpped Charles Xavior build his mantion and we also know that Jean and Scott were Charles's first students, Erik Lencher cannot be more than 15 years younger than in the earlier trilogy's continuity. this is why Ed Harris would be perfect for "the turning" of Magneto, provided they don't focus too much on his earlier years.

When InTylerWeTrust came up with this pic, i couldn't believe how perfect it was! I'm actually jealous i didn't think of it first LOL :P Thanks bud! What a stellar pic it is :))

Not a bad pic Shaman, but if we are going with someone a lil older, I say use Sir Ian, and CGI his ass!

Damn! One of your best drawings yet! Thanks for the shout out. He's perfect for Magneto!

Wulf, i for one "enjoyed" Sir Ian but in no way was he PERFECT for this role. Ed is. He has the intensity that Erik Lencher always showed. I don't even understand why Singer went with that old of an actor to portray him in the first place. Ed would OWN this role!!!

Thanks tyler, it's cause of you :))

You know, I have to be honest here. I am a HUGE fan of Ed Harris. He is my favorite actor! But I just don't see him in this role. I don't know why. I have no doubt that he could add the intensity that Magneto requires, but, physically, I can't see it. Just this dudes opinion.

And Shaman, excellent drawings by the way.

Not bad man, not who I would have chosen, but still a great pick! I love the helmet, easily one of your best sketches yet.

my main beef with Ed is that to me, he doesn't exude a regal presense that I feel Magneto needs. But I could see him pull it off.

@ Shaman, I definatly think he could pull it off, but I happen to be an Ian fan also. I think Ian did an awesome job as Erik, but you are right, by no means perfect. I am also a fan of Ed's. I love his portrayals, they are always believable. With that said, I doubt anyone could pull it off perfectly. I mean I think Bale was the best Bats by far, but he was by no means perfect.

Ian was the best choice for the version of Magneto they used in the movies. However, I would like to see a more powerful, intense Magneto that still retains intelligence, and Harris fits that description like a glove.

Shaman, I think the fact Sir Ian is also an openly homosexual actor had something to do with it. I thought he was great and who else could play Gandalf? I do wish they had someone with a combination of age and fitness. This is not an easy cast as I think about it. Nice drawing bro, and I agree for him as a replacement for Ian in future installments should we ever get one that would feature him. He was headmaster of Xavier's school for a time, the Mutant Massacre occurred during his leadership. I think someone younger is necessary for an origin story. He was about 19-20 when he escape's Auschwitz I believe, and in his mid twenties when he leveled the village of Vanitsa(not sure if that is the right name, kind of hazy on it) meeting Xavier at around Age 27-28. I could be off a few years, haven't read Magneto's backstory in a while, but you get what I'm at.

Artistically, I would not say this is one of your best. I say so because I can't tell that's Ed Harris. In Kraven's sketch, I could see Gerard Butler, in Elektra's, Rhona Mitra. I essentially see your own rendition of the character, which is good, but you didn't quite reach your goal of amalgamating the actor and character.

Keep up the good work Shaman, don't let my deuchebaggery discourage you. At least I'm honest ;)

Thanks to all the great comments and also for the different opinions! i enjoy this ALOT :))

ecksmanfan- Physically, Ian was in worse shape than Ed is so i figure it can't be the worst choice. I think that Erik was probably the worst character portrayal ever even though Ian did splendid! So i just think Ed doesn't "need" to be even more fit than he already is.

THEHAWK- True, Magneto should be regal but i think we all know that Ed is one of the greatest actors ever and i wouldn't say it's passed his skill to "exude regalness" even though we never saw him do it before. The way i see Magneto is as a great Orator like Hitler. A man that believes so deeply in what he thinks is right, will do ANYTHING to accomplish it (EXACTLY as he did in "The Rock") and will actually be able to sway you to follow him into the depts of hell! If General Francis X. Hummel wasn't Magneto, i don't know what is! But he'd just need to swich Hummel's "compassion" towards human lives to an apathy mixed with regalness. I firmly believe he's more than enough talented to accomplish it too.

WulfComicFan- Great point!!! IMO, Ian was the PERFECT Gandalf. And Ed has the talent and a chance to be the PERFECT Magneto. Depending on the age they're going with of course.

Tyler- couldn't agree with you more even if i tried!!!

Myth- Actually, since i see Ed as slightly younger than Ian, we'd be talking waaayyy future instalments. And i FULLY understand where you're coming from but that's not where FOX took them in their trilogy. Jean and Cycs are Charles's first students. Cerebro could also have been built after Charles got his first students. Which means it does give Erik the chance to be headmaster but not at 30. He'd easily be in his fifties. And Ed can still look like he's in his fifties. So like i've said, it will depend ONLY on what time they focus on for their "origin" of Lencher, so to speak. If they really go back to his concentration camp days, he'd be a teen. And i highly doubt that the focus will be on more than ONE era. So they'll need to pic which one and get the perfect actor for it. Ed is THE PERFECT age to be headmaster of Xavier's institute in their established film continuity which we all know fits in no way, shape or distant form to the comics's continuity :))

Oh and it's all good my firend, i appreciate your honesty ;) I personaly think it is my most resembling sketch i've ever done when compared to the photo i based it on. I put "the photo" as this article's teaser image on the fan fic page. But i get what you're saying, compared to my GerardKraven sketch, the actor's "personality" doesn't transpire as much. Had i not used a helmet, it would have alot more but then, his simple costume at the bottom of the page wouldn't have sufficed to link it to the character IMO. But to each's own ;)

Thanks Bag ;)

Shaman, exactly bro. It's a great drawing and I'm sure I couldn't do as good. just didn't transpire like some of my more favored of your artwork. Kraven and Elektra sketches are so awesome.

@Shaman- Oh man, I didn't mean that type of physical. I have no doubt he'd be able to pull of physical stunts and the like. I just mean his looks. To me, he just doesn't have the Magneto "look." But again, that's just my opinion.

Great drawing man!!!! Ed Harris would be good, but I'd rather see Liam Neeson as Magneto. Still great picture!!!!!

Watchtower31- Unfortunitely, i am a man of my word so i will sketch it this week. In fact, it's on my list for tomorow if i feel up to it ;)

TheMyth- Yes i do admit i'll have alot of trouble topping my Kraven sketch. My Mitra sketch is good but i keep thinking i could have done a bit better. Still one of my best though ;)

ecksmanfan- Oh the "look"!!! LOL sorry, my bad. Missinterpreted your comment ;)

TheCritic17- Of course Neeson would be an excellent Mags and Dr Strange no doubt :)

Ron- By the beard of ZEUS!!! I do believe we have a winner!!!!! LOL :P

Now keep a look-out tonight for my latest sketch which i did today! Fun for sharpshooters of all ages ;)

Thanks dude! Can't wait to know what people will think about my sketch of the winner of the Submariner fan cast poll: Vin Diesel. He is somewhat of an odd choice. I won't post it in an article until Roar does to announce the winner.
