The past, present, and future of the DC universe(Batman, superman, JLA...)

Hey guys hope your weekend is going good. I've been doing a lot of thinking the last week in my down time and I want to share afew things on nolans batman trilogy, the man of steel film, and the future of the dc universe.

First off I want to state that I'm a huge fan of the nolan batman films. I think its a cool concept of realism (though many things about the film aren't very realistic, harveys third degree burns for one and the fear toxin from begins.. alittle contradicting.)

These films were more like a far fetched crime drama. It wasn't really what batman was all about. I mean if you look closley, a lot of things strayed from the source material. And that's a great thing if you want to base it on realism(again I'm a big fan, not hating on these movies). Ras al ghul, the joker, and from what it looks like bane are straight up terrorists in these movies.

I guess what I'm trying to say is even if we want bale to appear next cavill(who's superman was noted to be in his own universe as well which I think is ridiculous if you ever want a crossover movie) it just won't mesh well. Its hard to put superman in the nolanverse where there hasn't been one real super natural villain/threat.

IMO I would really like to see zack snyder open his superman to the dc universe and not his own. I would also like to see him take on a "arkham asylum video game" influenced batman film. Basing the film closley to the game would make it easier to add the super natural aspects. Jokers origin, killer croc(not as big as the game) and the TRUE bane.

I loved watchmen. I know its long and boring but I think it was a well made film. The music, the visuals, it was perfect for what it was. When I first saw it in theatres the entire time I was imagining the JLA in this style and how batman, superman, and even darkseid would look if it were made like this. It was so dark and it was in a world were superheros were the norm. Not to mention billy cudrup as dr. Manhattan reminded me of martian manhunter.

I just think a batman reboot is definitley needed to crossover superheros. And a green lantern reboot is without a doubt! Needed. I haven't seen it, nor do I want to. TBH its ryan reynolds as gl that just annoys me. Not to mention the reviews I've read.

Dc and wb really need to be careful with there next step. Gl was suppose to do what iron man did for the mcu.

Let superman be part of a DC universe. Not a nolanverse-type spin off. Reboot the batman series to be more true to the unbelievable elements that make it as exciting as it is.

And dc don't just go around letting ANY director take on a cbm. We don't want a repeat of superman returns, batman and robin, green lantern, smallville(hated it, sorry guys lol) and we certainly want to prevent the kids of dawsons creek playing the justice league.(yeah this was a real plan for a jla adaption.)

Again, I love the nolanverse. But to make a dc universe or atleast a batman/superman movie to kick it off into future jla films(tower of babel would be cool live action. Leave it to batman to discover his new teammates vulnerabilies) it does indeed need to be rebooted. Or it will ruin the magic of what the nolan films were and nolans batman in a dc universe would take away from the magic that is a comic book based film.

This is my suggestion, what's yours?

Great points, but I beg to differ with regards to the Nolan verse Batman. I think that if the new Superman movie (which is scripted by the Batman writers) keeps it realistic and somewhat true to the DC comics cannon, WB can build on the success of Nolan's Batman. This is their best chance to create a universe of realism. Keep in mind, Nolan is the same guy who made Inception. He can introduce superhuman characters in a real world and direct a movie that is highly supernatural while realistic at the same time.

GL definitely needs to be rebooted now. That was DC's chance to create a "Star Wars" epic like movie, but they failed in so many ways with that rushed piece of crap.

If Superman builds on the Nolan verse Batman somehow, and Nolan is convinced to godfather a Justice League movie that is realistic and powerful all in one, I think we could have a masterpiece that even makes Marvel envious.

like the suggestions and i hate the fact that Superman is in his own universe since without any other superhero's in the world Superman will be on a constant watch taking care of problems in different cities and he might not be using his 'human' side

@fishybashi

I would absolutley love if nolans batman kick started the dc universe. I agree it definitley would be a good move. I'm also not oppose to a reboot if done right. In some aspects I do think it is needed to bring back characters like the joker and twoface (god knows nolan will not replace ledger) for future films BUT nolans batman could totally work. Id like to see his dark knight armor plates GREY for a jla movie.

Bradley cooper for gl

I'm sure at this point wb is going to have nolan godfather EVERY dc movie after the flop of gl lol they won't let that happen again and with the write pay check I'm sure he wouldn't be oppose to it

I guess we'll also see if the dark knight rises will be the first of the trilogy to add the super natural touch. In a lot of photos tom hardys tattoos are exposed. I'm guessing they will cgi the tattoo OFF but it could be a possibility they DO add some muscle mass(wishful thinking). Not to mention liam neeson has been spotted filming scenes from what I've read. If this is true we won't know for sure if its for a flash back sequence or post-lazzarus pit. Ill be honest I haven't liked too much of what I've seen but I also felt that way when I heard heathe ledger was going to be the joker. We'll see what happens in the future. All I know is I'm very excited to see what they'll make of all this.

@talesofcrimealley,

I hope Nolan continues to stay involved with the DC Universe. That really would be the only way to guarantee that the DC characters are cohesive in film. I heard a World's Finest rumor -- that would be epic!

I certainly hope that Nolan RECONSIDERS keeping MOS in the same universe as his Batman. Can you imagine what would happen if at the end of TDKR, you see the Bat signal and upon Batman's answering the call you see the back of a man with a red cape who says to Bats, "I see you've been doing some interesting things around here. I could use your help with a little something." Then Batman replies, "I think it's about to get interesting around here..." .... Perfect way to build excitement for MOS, which would focus on telling Superman's origin.

MOS and Batman Begins could be the beginning of a world of superheroes. The supernatural stuff can happen later with a Green Lantern reboot. Bradley Cooper is a great choice. But make it like a Star Wars flick -- realistic and mature. Not campy and corny like the recent GL flop that seems rushed.

Flash could be a "realistic" character, as well, because he receives powers via something supernatural. He could be a great third character to introduce into the DC Universe movies.

Keep in mind, Joker is still alive. Nolan knew NOT to kill him off. And though Ledger's Joke is epic, I think Johnny Depp would do an excellent joker. Also, we can't be 100% sure Two Face is indeed dead. What if they secretly locked him up in Arkham to conceal his identity? Plus, they can make a JL or World's Finest movie that doesn't involve those two baddies.

A World's Finest movie that pits Superman and Batman vs. Lexcorp would work. Scarecrow can become a bigger baddie in that movie again, or, like I said, Johnny Depp as the Joker. Bale, Cavill, Depp, and Lex Luthor. Potential for a great movie, I think. Oh, and yes, Nolan at the helm as "godfather" of course...

But first things first. Let TDKR kick ass. Let MOS kick ass. Then WB needs to move forward with the movies that have kicked ass. I'm a Nolan fan. I'm a DC fan. It's a match made in heaven for me ... Don't ruin a good thing by rebooting it all over again!!!!

@fishybashi

Very good points. Your ending to tdkr would be epic lol wayne enterprise could be in some negotiations with lex corp. Good way to get bruce to metropolis which they DID mention in tdk as an easter egg. Superman and batman could also make a plan for wayne ent. To make a deal with lex corp. To get a "closer look at there books" to find an underlying intention.

I really do hope they make a flash movie. I do think green arrow and aqauman could be introduced the way hawkeye and black widow are in the avengers. They don't necassaraly need stand alone films but an aqauman film could be more exciting then people think. Like thors asgard but an under water atlantis

Agreed, Tales. I love your ideas, man! TDK mentions Metropolis? I'll have to look for that. Please clarify that easter egg you mention, because I will look for it.

But I'm with you on this. I look forward to seeing more of your writing around here.

Leo Dicaprio for Aquaman. Yes, I loved the Thor movie too. It would be epic with Leo.

Oh, and have you all seen this stuff on the net that the Superman logo is hidden in TDKR poster? I saw it online, and it looks like the Superman logo indeed. Is Nolan up to more easter eggs? ;-) Sure the hell hope so!!!! I'm such a nerd ...

Thanks man like wise

Ya know I could swear gordon says "halfway to metropolis" in begins or tdk but I could be mistaken for batman forever or arkham asylum. I specifically remember gary oldman saying it but I googled it and nothing came up so I could be wrong

I'm going to rewatch both. I only discovered earlier this year that victor zahz was in batman begins. In the beggining in court with crane and at the end when he's about to attack rachel and the little boy with a knife.

CrimeAlley - 8/14/2011, 6:42 PM
Good point in reference to what hulk and thor did for the avengers. I didn't even look at it like that. I just can't see nolans batman standing next to green lantern or wonder woman. His lack if super natural super villains just kind of makes it hard to see the other characters villains come into play.

And yes batmans story is a far fetched crime drama. But I was refering to the difference between comic book movie action compared to a crime drama like se7en. I would definitley like to see bane and croc done justice. Not necassaraly the size of hulk but men just big enough to make it impossible for batman to elbow bane in the face like in the set photos. I don't care for ivy. But I would like to see an arkham asylum/watchmen type of batman wheather or not its tied into the justice league. Just my fantasy.

And for the record I would like to see the dark knight returns done the way sin city was filmed. I think it would be interesting even as a short film. Black and white with colors like the jokers makeup and twoface' scars stand out. And batmans cape and cowl shining blue anytime a light is shined on him.

And actually nolan himself was qouted saying characters like penguin and mr. Freeze don't fit into his world he has created. Its hard to do them without entering the super nataral element thus stating his world is to "realistic" for things like that.

@Tales, I think you are right. I may remember it was Morgan Freeman who may have said the Metropolis reference. But I do remember vaguely something about that. Let me know if you find it ...

You took the.words from my thoughts...I agree with just about everything you had to say about this and watchman was an amazing film wasn't boring to me at all as I've read the novel countless times and Zach synder knows how to adapt comic character's....even with nolan behind his film and they reboot Batman to fit the watchmen style jla you were talking about that'd be great

If you want them to reboot GL and Batman and you want to see a JLA movie it'll probably happen in 2030. I'm not waiting 20 more years. I need to go rent watchmen or something before i totally bash on this article though.
