I do remember seeing this a while ago, it's fan art but it's really good! I certainly wouldn't mind seeing the turtles looking like this.

I just finished watching turtles forever, and I have to say I loved it. The depiction of the turtles from the comics was amazing, it was worth watching just to see them in their black and white glory.

I agree with flames here, though it doesn't bother me. The turtles faces seem a bit squished. But it's still a sweet picture.

Also if you liked this picture check out my review of the newest animated feature Turtles Forever.

Cool image, though I seriously doubt it's concept art for the live action film. I think this artist was trying to make the Turtles more turtle like, but really their faces look more human like flames809 and Guardian noted, it just looks plain weird.

I always liked Mike Zulli's take on them from the original series. He did a three issue story called Soul's Winter that had a pretty unique idea of them.

Not the best pictures from it but the only ones I could find from work.

hmm I don't remember that arc JerusalemJr, and I thought I read them all! When did it come out? It looks pretty interesting.

I think around 1990, though when I was looking for the images I found a collected of the story arc for sale by itself. It had a bit more spiritualistic look on the whole thing. I don't remember much about the story other than Shredder actually looking like a samurai and something about a giant skeletal bird on Splinter's spirit quest, but the art was awesome.

JerusalemJr, that does look pretty bad ass, I'll have to see if I can find this book. I have some of the original books, not all of them unfortunately, but I'm working on it.

The comics always shocked me as a kid because I was used to the cartoon before I started on the original Mirage series and they were extremely violent. That story arc and the single issue where the turtles meet the gods of myth are always stuck as some of my favorite comics as a kid, those and a couple of the old X-men annuals.

I was the same dude, I saw the 80's cartoon before my brother gave me his books, I have Volume I, II, & IV. I need to get on it!

I loved how raw the characters were and the stories were great, my favorite is still the short story about Splinter needing to save a friend from assassination and the Turtles (who were still in training) used only their training weapons to fight the ninjas, even their bandannas covered their whole head, it was amazing!

thwhtGuardian - 12/9/2009, 1:18 PM
I loved that story stumblin!
I too was shocked when I first stumbled across the original comics. I think I was in the forth grade when my dad gave me a collection of the first story arc. even he didn't know what he was giving me, it was just the turtles it should be safe enough, right? It rocked my world. While it wasn't the first black and white comic, as I had been introduced to the medium by hellboy in the comic con comic book. But man were the turtles different they were rough and sketch like. It was wild.
JerusalemJr
JerusalemJr - 12/9/2009, 1:26 PM
Stumblin - I don't remember that one, though being a kid at the time and having to fund my own comic addictions I missed several issues. Sounds like I need to get on completing the collection now as well. Of course between the violence in those and the original Lone Wolf and Cub releases I probably have an explanation as to why I have such a twisted mind now. Man those books were violent.

thewhtGuardian - Yeah, I think most of my favorite comics are in black and white, it gives a completely differant feel to things and a really nice detail that tends to get drowned out when color is added.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/9/2009, 2:12 PM
Yeah, it's true, black and white comics have a sort of old hollywood movie feel to them that I love, the shading and contrast just seem much more beautiful. Hellboy in color is cool, I still love the art, but the first black and white mini issue I got at comic con still holds a special place in my heart.
Stumblin
Stumblin - 12/9/2009, 2:33 PM
Hell yeah Guardian!

JerusalemJr, you got to check out that story I can't remember which volume it was in though it was at the end of the book I believe.

I love the original black and white comics, I picked up the new TMNT when they were trying to go back to the roots a few years back, they were done in black and white too though the art was a little lacking, couldn't compare to the original books. I haven't seen the b&w Hellboy comics, I've been trying to collect all of them, and I have to say Mike Mignola is a hellu'va cool guy.
JerusalemJr
JerusalemJr - 12/9/2009, 3:03 PM
It has been to long since I purchased new comics.... I think it is about time to start again, and it sounds like back issues and graphic novels will be where it begins.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/9/2009, 3:27 PM
yeah, that's mostly what I do, and paperbacks. By far the greatest thing in comicdom. I just recently got the whole run of Gaiman's sandman, it's great to catch up on old classics.
JerusalemJr
JerusalemJr - 12/9/2009, 3:29 PM
You know for as big a fan of Gaiman as I am I have never read any of his comic material. My wife tells me that the Sandman's are amazing but I havn't checked them out yet. Mainly because of the amount of GNs I would need to purchase I think.
Stumblin
Stumblin - 12/9/2009, 6:32 PM
I'm right with you guys, I've been picking up all the classics that I've missed; Ronin, Bone, and of course the Turtles. I have yet to read any Sandman but I hear nothing but amazing things about it. I also want to try my hand at the Preacher.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/9/2009, 8:00 PM
yeah that was my original reason for not reading Sandman, I was told that you really have to read it from start to finish(and you do). But I recently broke down and bought all four of the hardcover essential series which collects every issue. I found them used on amazon for like 20 bucks a pop so it wasn't to bad.And there are also plenty of places to ~ahem~ download it illegally. But I decided against it out of my respect for Gaiman and my love of actually holding a physical book. It was amazing, and worth every cent. I also liked Ronin, but my most recent purchase was an old Mignola book from his DC days, Cosmic Odyssey. It was amazing to see how he drew the classic DC line up. i love his work.
In that vain I think my next read is batman: gotham by gaslight. It's another mignola book and one of the original elseworlds stories.
JerusalemJr
JerusalemJr - 12/9/2009, 11:02 PM
Gotham by Gaslight is very cool, very much a Lovecraftian take on the Batman. That is actually the reason I like Mignola, he is like the comic worlds version of HP Lovecraft and I have always enjoyed the idea and feel of those stories.

I might just have to skip the comic book stores for my GNs and go with some online searches. I am with you in wanting to actually own a copy I can hold and give the goods to those who put it together but I wouldn't mind finding a discount as you did :).

Also, Miller's stuff always drew me in, Ronin was very enjoyable and I hope it does get made into a movie. I actually really liked his Martha Washington stuff as well, as weird as it was.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/9/2009, 11:11 PM
lol I've seen Martha Washington but I've never read it. It certainly looked odd.

I'm all about discount. I mean, I know the author doesn't get a dime when I buy a used copy so I might as well be downloading it, but still I am paying so I don't feel like I'm stealing per say.

Not that I'm against downloading either, I do it frequently, but if it's a book I really want to read again and again I buy it. Nothing beats the feel of the paper in your hands.
Stumblin
Stumblin - 12/10/2009, 12:24 AM
Yeah, I'm a stickler when it comes to reading, I either get the book fresh and clean or borrow it from someone and eventually buying a copy. I can't do the online reading, hurts the hell out of my eyes.

I haven't heard of Gotham by Gaslight, I'll put that on my ever growing list. I did finally check out Joker, that book was insane! But very cool, a real whacked version of the mob and such.

Mignola is one of my favorite artists Guardian, his style is a breath of fresh air, cliche but true. I remember reading seeing some of his early works, I'd like to start a collection of all his old stuff.

thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/10/2009, 12:40 AM
I'm currently working on it, I think that's my project. I have all his later work on hellboy and bprd and witchfinder general. I even bought the hellboy rpg to get the mini comic it had. And I have his run on conan, even though he just wrote it. His early stuff is hard to find. I heard he did some namor too but I can't find it.
