About two years ago the first Amazing Spiderman costume was released and everyone was at ends about the design. The new costume was released and about everyone is on the same side. The new costume is great but what does that mean to the future of comic book movies.
Expectations for future Spider-Man films
When the reboot was announced the costume had a lot to live up to. The movie costume I grew up with and others did was the Raimi costume. I for one did not have a problem with the reboot costume since I could understand that this was realistic and that this was a prototype for the Spiderman that was going to come or become. Now the sequel costume came out and it sets something to build off on. It’s the first costume in the franchise to be really close to the comics. It has the big white eyes, the colors (maybe it should have a better shade of blue), and the symbol. It makes it hard for future Spidey movies to top. If they have black indented webbing in the sequel it’s going to be hard for the next reboot. Maybe one day we could see the Iron Spider costume or the webbing under his arm or they could get the black suit right but anything could happen.
What it means to future CBM's
In 2008 the movie to define how superhero movie were going to be like for the next 5 years was The Dark Knight. It is a great movie but it still made movie studios make very bad decisions which caused Dark Knight replica movies trying to make all CBM's realistic and dark and gritty. The costumes had to be real and had to make since in realistic world. The Avenger's were the first movie so far to break that and made it where it was what if these people were in our world not how would this person come to be in our world. The new Spider-Man costume is next to make this happen and the costume has white eyes and the webbing on it but not a costume that apologizes that its a superhero costume, not trying to make up for it with complex designs that's not close to the comics.
Oh Yeah, the White Eyes
For years costume designers has struggled with white eyes on superheroes. They've been using the actors eyes with make up but saying that the only reason they've did it was to convey emotions (I don't think they've heard of emotive eyes,
they almost did it in Spider-Man 2002). The new Spidey suit has the white eyes which looks really cool instead of the reflective ones. The new suit took more liberties and risks but with a good outcome. Costume designers are being told not to start off from scratch and only using the outline as a base but look where it came from in the comics. It would be cool to see white eyes in Batman's mask instead of just an easter egg of sonar vision or on Green Lantern domino's mask, or Robin's and not just in fan films. White eyes has been around since the 40s since the Spirit and would be sad to see it go away. That's what I think the new Spidey costume would mean to future CBM's.
