Just as “Smallville” is getting to the end, the beginning of the reboot of the Superman franchise will begin with Christopher Nolan as producer for the film — or, as many have called him, the godfather. I got very excited when I heard that the man who had made the Batman franchise the best version of Batman in history (no offense to fans who really liked the old movies) would bring the Man of Steel back to the big screen. Since then, there have been a lot of rumors about who is directing and, of course, who will play Superman.

A couple of weeks ago, a rumor was floating that Zachary Levi (of TV’s “Chuck”) had apparently auditioned for the role but it was later denied by Levi himself. I have nothing against Levi at all, “Chuck” is one of my favorite shows but Levi isn’t Superman material. However, people who work at Warner Brothers have stated that it’s a TV star that they are looking for as Superman. Of course, the name Brandon Routh (who played Superman in “Superman Returns”) pops up on many internet forums but there is also one more name that pops up and this name has been known since 10 years ago … Tom Welling. For years, people had been wondering if Welling had any interest in donning the Superman suit on Smallville or on the big screen and this year at Comic-Con in the press room after the final Smallville panel, the actor finally addressed his thoughts of getting to the big screen:

“I’ve always been open to the idea. There’s just … it’s not as simple as everyone would like to think. It’s not as simple as me wanting to do it, or not wanting to do it. Um, I know a lot of people want to jump on me, or jump on Warner Bros., or why … it’s just not that simple. Um, and so there’s a lot of elements that … that have to come together and, you know, I’ve always been open to it.”

So there you have it folks, Welling apparently is interested. Now, it’s just up to the people at Warner Brothers and, most importantly, Nolan. We haven’t actually heard Nolan’s opinion on “Smallville” or on Tom Welling, but I have a few theories on what is going on with Nolan’s film and the involvement with “Smallville.”

Now, maybe Nolan hasn’t paid attention at all to Welling, but that doesn’t mean that the idea of bringing Welling in for the role is gone. WB is still going to have influence on the role and we have heard from the producers of “Smallville,” as well as cast members, that Warner Brothers has provided big support for them through the years, which I totally understand. With the ongoing court issue over the “Superman” rights, “Smallville” is, right now, the only Superman media they have going on. So casting the role before “Smallville” is over is something people won’t need to worry about. Welling has played this role for 10 years and being on for 10 years does prove he could be the right actor to take on the role. As in matter of fact: Welling did actually say a couple of years ago that he was approached for the “Superman Returns” movie before Routh — the only problem was that he knew that it would be very difficult to shoot the movie during the same time as “Smallville” was in its fifth season. It would, in the end, make him choose to either leave the show or do the movie.
I know that there are people out there that aren’t fans of “Smallville” and one of the main problems with bringing Welling in the new Superman movie series is that …

Welling in Nolan’s Movie = ‘Smallville: The Movie’
I understand completely that people are worried about Nolan’s film turning into a “Smallville” film if they go with Welling and perhaps some of the other cast members as well — such as Erica Durance, who also said at Comic-Con that she is open to the idea as well, but with a few demands such as playing with Welling, etc. But what people now really have to realize is that just because Welling has played Clark Kent/Superman on TV that his getting the role on the big screen doesn’t automatically mean the film will relate to “Smallville.” Nolan will make the film in a way that he wants to do and having seen Welling for the last 10 years, Welling has proven he is this generation’s Superman and if he would have to portray Superman totally different from what “Smallville” has done, he could handle it and make it a success.

I know that bringing in an unknown actor — like they did with Routh in “Superman Returns” — was, for people who liked the movie, a really good thing to do. However, superhero movies today are cast differently than they were just four years ago and I just don’t see an unknown actor as an good idea anymore when it comes to Superman. People look at Tom Welling as some kind of teenage-idol in a superhero-drama show — and maybe he was just that a couple of years ago — but now he is so much more than that. Welling, first of all, definitely has the look of Superman and the right personality for the role. Through the years, some have described Welling’s portrayal of Clark Kent as not “Superman-ish,” but season 9 really changed that, and even though it has taken a while, it was definitely worth it. Welling proved, at least to me and to a lot of people out there, that he is the Superman for this generation and I don’t see anyone else being the right person than him. I highly recommend Superman fans watch these two episodes from season 9 to see what I mean: “Absolute Justice” and “Salvation” (especially “Salvation”).

As much as I would love to have most of the “Smallville” cast in the movie, doing that would then make Nolan’s film into a “Smallville” movie rather than just having Welling as Superman. I can imagine Tom and Erica Durance and the rest (depending on which character Nolan is bringing in) recast … but that doesn’t really have anything to do with my main purpose of this article. Welling deserves a chance and he is entering a new step with his character — which is what will make him Superman. I know 100 percent that Welling is the one who Nolan should go for.

Welling hasn’t been in the suit, but he has proven he understands the responsibility of the character, and he has proven that he is worthy of playing Superman.

Lol... are you a girl by any chance? : P

Seriously he may be a bit of a hunk in your eyes but SMALLVILLE's too [frick]ed up in history to even hope WELLING in getting the SUPERMAN gig!

How are they gonna do JLA if WELLING is there?

I wouldn't mind seeing him in a movie as SUPERMAN, a TV movie special after SMALLVILLE not the Big Screen!

Blame all the SMALLVILLE writers! : D

I'm down for Welling. He looks like Supes, and he can play a humble, small-town farm-boy.

Smallville does suck though. How could Clark Kent meet all these villains and heroes before he even wears the cape? I feel like whatever happens, Clark will never be able to become the real Superman at time Smallville ends.

i dont agree with most ov the guys above me
i can add to your article...

if you see on smallville the chemisty clark and lois have,in fact..not just clark and lois as characters..tom and erica as people over 6 years, their relationship has grown ALOT,its that relationship where you have that 1 friend and then get with them and it doesnt feel weird and i like that on smallville soo id REALLY like to see nolan try and recreate that chemistry which i dont think no one can for when the film is planned to be released..
the casting subject i agree, because alot of the characters on smallville will leave by then end of season 10 i recon so they could easy recast the characters for a movie if they plan on putting people in such as oliver queen but i doubt it..
i personally think he will choose tom for the part..
when he said it will be a tv star...who the HELL could he have seen on tv..*apart from welling* and thought straight away..oh ye he can be my superman without any thought into it! when..turn on to CW..or E4 cos i liv in the uk,and see tom kicking zods ass! i know who i wud choose even if i didnt watch smallville

Yo ANDY BEHBAKHT! Excellent article! Very well written & thought out. I too would like to see Tom Welling in Superman more than anything. Some of the comments above state that he is a weak actor. Oh please! With the right direction & script, you can turn a supposedly weak actor into a stellar one. These same people think that Superman Returns was a great flick. Therein lies the hilarity. Before S.R., the few people who saw Routh on screen saw him in roles as a wooden actor, then he does Superman Returns and they praise him. Morons.

I too want Tom Welling for Superman: The Man of Steel!

@Jahozafat
I don't think Routh is anything special either. To be fair though the guy only had like 5 lines in the movie. His Clark Kent was... okay. But then again your not really suppposed to notice Clark Kent anyway. He didn't make a very compelling Superman, he was just... there.

Welling has had NINE SEASONS to proove himself as an actor and he hasn't convinced me. Even in other films like The Fog or Cheaper By the Dozen he's wooden. He's not as bad as say Keanu Reeves but the guy has like one facial expression.

Welling as Superman in a movie by the Nolans... Not a chance in hell. I don't think they would even consider him for the part, and I don't think he has the charisma and presence for film, not to mention in all these years of having a show and doing minor films his acting has yet to improve. Smallville is a mishmashed piece of shit and has been for years and I don't think DC would have anything to gain by bringing it to the big screen, too hard to explain the events of 10 years of chaotic storytelling. I appreciate your passion, but I just don't agree and can't see this happening.

No he hasn't.

"It would, in the end, make him choose to either leave the show or do the movie."
LMAO....So which one did he do? Oh that's right.....

"Welling, first of all, definitely has the look of Superman and the right personality for the role."
No, he doesn't. He's a vegetable for hire. About as interesting as Keanu Reeves.

"I know 100 percent that Welling is the one who Nolan should go for."
Yeah, because hiring C-grade TV actors with negligible talent is what Nolan loves to do, right?

Except, he's just not distinctive as an actor. Capable, yes, but the reason Christopher Reeves was great is that he brought something new and interesting to the role. Welling would just be trying to fill someone else's shoes.

Now that I think about it, Nolan probably despises Smallville.

To all the people that want a "Routhboot". All Brandon did was a half way decent impression of Chris Reeves in Superman Returns. Tom put his OWN spin on Supes, not trying to copy anyone else. Tom needs to be Supes....although I doubt it'll happen, but if it does, Im there day one.

@Optimus agreed, new franchise; new Superman. Its the best way to go and it will be the way Nolan goes with it. No one, not WB or DC, is going to tell this guy who to cast. Making (what is TDK now?) the third highest grossing film of all time they know well enough to let the man do what he and his brother do best: make great CBMs. He could cast Marlon Wayanes as Supes and the studio would agree, but fortunately for us the guy knows talent and has the acclaim to work with only the best or choose the best actor for the role from a field of unknowns, which I think is the way to go.

I admit that I questioned Nolan's casting of Heath Ledger as Joker and Michael Caine as Alfred and each time the guy proved he could see who was best for the part. I won't question him a third time. I trust Nolan.

i feel u nero...who ever Nolan casts as Supes... i kno its gonna work, Welling is my own personal choice, i kno im gonna get crucified, but welling has done a good job...the main problem is that no body reads comics anymore, but if they did they would see the similarties between Tom's Clark and the comics. The problem is that half the Jabronies that post stuff on this site dont read comics and they get teir info from movies and wikipedia......Comic book fans need to read comics.
Protonite
Protonite - 8/26/2010, 1:08 AM
@NERO - My thoughts exactly. We should trust Nolan to deliver. Some people seem to think that if they cry about it long enough he'll cast who they want him to. Not gonna happen. We need to be patient and trust in him to make the choice that no one else can make - the right choice. :)

I, too, was a bit skeptical about Heath in the beginning. But only because I thought his facial structures were too different from the comic-book Joker, I knew he could act. Now he's the best Joker and Bale is the best Batman, in my opinion. Both fantastic actors, who were not very popular with the masses before they were chosen. Even Aaron Eckhart came alive under Nolan's watch. He brings the best out of everybody.

Ok, lets get this straight. Mr. Nolan goes for Oscar winning actors, check.....
Superman has to be at least 6,2 tall.....
The only person that comes in my mind that would look like superman/Clark Kent is...wait for it....
Adrien Brody!!!!!

I mean look at him. Clark Kent with glasses. Look at when he did Predators, the guy got ripped.
JustinMSalvato
JustinMSalvato - 8/26/2010, 3:31 AM
I threw up a little when I read Adrien Brody. Don't say that again. As for Nolan's casting history, gimme a break, he hired Juno and Cobra Commander. They can turn Welling into the Man of Steel.

Welling's portrayal of Clark Kent, now that he is comfortable at the Daily Planet, reminds me of George Reeves portrayal.

"Welling has proven he is this generation’s Superman"

How exactly has he done that? By being on a show thats been up for cancellation for the past 4 or 5 seasons? A show that doesn't even have Superman on it?

I know one person outside of this site that watches Smallville. If I went around work and asked everyone here if they like Tom Welling, they would have no idea who i was talking about. So explain how he's "this generations" Superman again.
Protonite
Protonite - 8/26/2010, 5:57 AM
@minerva - I was hoping for someone else before I read "Adrian Brody". Not particularly a Supes contender. But if(and only IF) Nolan wants to cast him, then who am I to argue.

@Jahozafat - I understand that you'd love to have Welling play Supes in the movie, and are praising his acting ability. But DO NOT diss on Joseph Gordon-Levitt while doing so. JGL is a much better actor than 'one-emotion'-Welling. They're so far apart in their acting capabilities, it's not even funny. It's like dissing on DiCaprio's acting while lavishing praise on Keanu Reeves'.
