What Did Big Superman Fan Jerry Seinfeld Think Of MAN OF STEEL?

Comedian/actor Jerry Seinfeld took to Reddit for an AMA session, and was asked his opinion on Zack Snyder's Superman reboot. It seems he had some issues, as many others did, with the overuse of action..but it's an element of the mythology the movie left out that really bothered him.

The Jerry Seinfeld faithful will know how much of a fan of the big blue boy-scout he is - in fact it's common knowledge that Superman is mentioned or referenced in almost every (or is it every?) episode of Seinfeld. When the comedian posted an "ask me anything" Reddit forum, it didn't take long before someone asked his opinion on the latest big-screen outing for Kal El, Man Of Steel.

"I was so happy that they made another Superman movie! I'm really reluctant to be critical of it in any way. But I thought the glossing over of the figuring out a secret identity and why he felt he needed one was a huge missed opportunity for that character, and one of the most interesting things about Superman is the whole secret identity. So to me it was too much action / violence and not enough character study."

I agree that the secret identity thing is an important part of the Superman story, but not that it was a "missed opportunity". We've seen that come into play in all previous Superman movies and we knew from the beginning that Snyder and co. were going to go a different route - an origin tale that leaves the "Clark/Supes" secret identity dynamic open for exploration in future films. Anyway, just my take..what do you guys think? Agree with Seinfeld? Oh, and if you're a Seinfeld/Curb Your Enthusiasm fan you may want to know that Jerry also says he and Larry David are working on something "big". Link below.

Loved the film. I think the whole secret identity thing will probably be explored in Batman Vs Superman but that's just speculation.

I think this was the main problem with critics/ reviews. For years fans have been clamoring for a more action packed Superman film. Well we got one but didn't get enough character development. I hope they find a decent balance for the next film.

I agree that it did lack character growth, but then again they were jamming in 2 stories as one, an origin story with an invasion story....not much room there to really expand :S

Clark will have the secret identity going on in MoS2.Only ppl that will know it will be Lois & eventually Bruce.Hell Perry White didn't even recognize Clark as Supes.MoS 2 should answer all these ?'s & then some.

So despite his reluctance, he was disappointed with it. I agree, Man of Steel would be a better film if it was just a 3 minutes short film based on trailer 3, instead the whole mess that the film was.

agree with seinfeld. lets bring on all the mos defenders to say one of the great comic minds of our time is just an idiot.

There was no secret identity to explore, really. That aspect was teased at the end, so we can expect more detail with it in the sequel.

I'm pretty sure they're saving further character development for part 2. I have a feeling Bruce will like help shape him into the man of steel we all know and love.

How will his secret identity be explored in the sequel when everyone knows who he is. Everyone in Smallville knew that Clark was Superman, and I doubt those in the Daily Planet are that stupid to not recognize Clark after seeing him, as Superman, kiss Lois after he had saved her.

Cavil IS great but the script is meh. Individual performances are good but Goyer missed the mark.

I think it is cool how they saved up the reporter Clark Kent for the very last scene. Great way to get you excited about the next film.

The thing I love about Superman is, his secret identity is Clark Kent.

You look at other superheroes. Peter Parker is secretly Spiderman, Bruce Wayne is secretly Batman, but Kal-El/Superman is secretly Clark Kent.

character development is so easy why not just make the movie 3 hours long and put it in its so easy god just have people talking clark to lois his mom and dad? why is it so difficult and why take out the action for this shit? its not important to me the reason i see comic book movies is for the cgi and hopefully some half naked female superheroes. thats it lol

More reason why MOS poorly scripted... poor character study... and Hollywood doesn't believe in secret identities. One of the many things adapting a CBM that goes OVER THEIR HEADS!
*sigh*
wcwpoet

The identity was flat out stupid, I mean the way Lois tracked him down I fully expect Batman to know who he is as soon as the movie starts.
Spidey10
Spidey10 - 1/6/2014, 12:36 PM
@wcwpoet hahahahahaah thats true how can he be a ghost for that long and then she finds him in 3 scenes lol Batman should know then who he is by first encouter with that logic
MrCBM56
MrCBM56 - 1/6/2014, 12:36 PM
LOL at the people who say they wanted more Clark.

You had Clark up until he found the Scout Ship.

Clark was a nomad, a silent guardian, a person who never really fit in. It's not rocket science, just pay attention to the movie.
