FANTASTIC 4: The Superhero Movie I Have Been Waiting For

Now that the trailer is out, it's time to jump on the bandwagon! This movie is tearing people apart, some like it, some hate it, some just want to wait and see. I am just here to explain why I think this movie is a good thing, and how it is the superhero movie I have been waiting years to see.

Foreword
If you cannot take semi-harsh critism of your favorite comic book movies, leave now.  While I love the MCU, and I cannot wait for Age of Ultron, I will be speaking some hard truths. I am not condemning these films, I am not saying they are bad, I am going to discuss an underlying problem with them. I am not saying you are stupid or worse for enjoying these films, I am simply stating how the superhero film industry has dissapointed me in recent years.

2008: A Super Odyssey

2008 was a monumental year for comic book movies. It is the year the entire subgenre changed. The year it became mainstream. Why is this? Because of 2 films, the Dark Knight and Iron Man. Despite your personal feelings on each film, you cannot deny they both sparked new and unique waves of comic book and superhero movies. The Dark Knight spawned serious and dark interpratations, while Iron Man spawned light hearted and comic book-y films. Most of you will prefer one over the other, and most will say the Iron Man method. This is also the year the super hero film began it's process of death.

Death by Victory

?? Like I said, 2008 was a good year and generated the buzz needed for comic book movies to become reinvigorated. After 2010, there was a boom in comic book movies. 2011 gave us First Class, Green Lantern, Thor and Captain America. At the time, 4 comic book films seemed excessive. Just 5 years later in 2016, we are en route to see 8. I cannot even list them all. The genre is over stepping it's bounds and fast. The most damning part is the lack of innovation, we keep seeing the same formula being used by each studio. With the right creative team, this formula can create a great film ala Winter Soldier. The problem still remains though, how many Winter Soldiers can the general public see until it becomes mundane? I am sure, alot, but there isn't along term goal.

Captain America: The First Dissapointment
This is completely a taste issue. When I heard Thor and Captain America announced, I was so excited. I thought they were going to get the Iron Man treatment and completely change the way people want to make comic book movies. These dreams were crushed when i saw the first image of Thor. For any Marvel Fan, that image was a dream come true. It kept the neo-sci fi look of 60s asgard, but up to date with the MCU style. I was expecting a viking, furs, ripped cape, real metals, giant bolts, and a long sexy beard. Instead we got Thor, which was exactly what most people were looking for. I wanted it to be the 300 of the MCU, vicious and norse, a redemption on par with Jaime Lannister.

Then came Captain America. I don't think I am unjustified in my dissapoint with captain america. To my own fault, I went in expecting something completely differant. I expected a WW2 movie with Captain America and Red skull in it. Not a superhero movie with a weird cartoon WW2 backdrop. I expected to see Nazis and a Red Skull who cut his face off. I certainly didn't expect to see lasers. What I saw through my own eyes, was yet another a generic superhero movie, yet a highly entertaining one at that.

What are you getting at, Mr  Strong Opinion?
To kind of sum up my feelings, I have been longing for Superhero genre films. Now I know some people will call the winter soldier a politcal thriller, but it's not. It's an action movie with an interesting political thriller esque plot. But it's still a superhero action movie. The same can be said about nearly any superhero movie. Not just marvel ones either, the Dark Knight movies suffer from this, specifically the Dark Knight Rises. Despite my love for the X-Men movies, I can say these films do the same thing. They are period peices and unique, but still just action movies. There is so much potential to be more than just action movies.

Before I go any futher, I know I am getting my hopes too high. Dont worry about it.

Fant4stic's Role in This
Fant4stic looks to be what i have been looking for. It doesn't look like an action movie, it doesn't look like generic super hero movie fodder. I recognize that's not what people want, but that's what the industry needs. We need superhero genre films. We need a war drama starring captain america or the punisher, we need fantasy epics starring Thor or Aquaman,  we need superhero movies that aren't afraid of taking themselves seriously. Fant4stic appears to be a sci fi drama, and a very competent one at that. Does this mean it isn't faithful to the source material? No, it appears Trank is creating the film as a love letter to the various incarnations of this family through the comics. He isn't adapting, he is interpretting. Do I expect perfection? No, but I expect something new and fresh, which these films have seriously been lacking in for the past 7 years.

Conclusion
I am probably completely off base and totally wrong about all of this, but I just wanted to share why I am so excited for this film. Possibly even more than Batman V Superman, and coming from a huge DC fan, that means something. Please tell me why my opinion is wrong in the comments, seriously I love it when you guys have it out in the comments. Thats why I come to this site everyday.

I mostly agree, although I don't know how realistic it is to expect superhero films that can be cleanly classified as something other than action films. I mean, I think that many of them are about much more than just action, even something like Iron Man or Thor, or especially Spider-Man 2 or X2.

The biggest thing about the MCU films is that they are designed to fit together in a shared universe, and The First Avenger probably did suffer from that more than most, in that it was a prelude the Avengers more than a pure Captain America film. Marvel Studios keeps things close together.

What exactly are you looking for in a film to make it "more than just an action film"?

gamecreatorjj - 1/28/2015, 11:16 PM
@Wolf38 The best way to describe it is if they made a Punisher movie that was a war drama about his PTSD from Vietnam slowly building into his becoming the punisher in the third act.

Action and conflict is fine, but superhero films get caught up in the three action set piece formula, and the plot is built around getting to these action scenes. This works perfectly for the MCU, but I wish there was more depth.

A big way to draw things back together without restricting the comic book formula too much, is to simply make a smaller scale film. Spiderman movies shouldn't involve grand plans to turn everyone into lizards or destroy the city. It feels like every marvel movie is getting bigger and bigger, with less personal small stories. Once again, Disney isn't the only perpetrator, but movies like DOFP can mask this by having two parallel stories, one personal and one grand in scale.

I don't expect these film series to change drastically, and I probably wouldn't want them to. For the most part I like how things are being handled. But I love seeing new experimentation like Fant4astic, and it really irritates me when people shit all over trying something new in exchange for the same thing we are seeing 3 or 4 times a year.

Now technically it was Batman Begins that sparked the whole gritty reboot thing but whatever.

Agree with your opinion. This film is definetly filled with some big aspirations and some people might call that pretentious but honestly we need more "big" movies to take chances and especially in the superhero genre, where the formula is pretty well known.

Only thing I dont agree is Cap being worse than Thor. I remember being so stoked to see the Thor movie and coming out of the theater with a resounding MEH impression.

@blackcondor While Batman Begins technically started it, I don't give it the credit as it didn't reach the same mainstream media attention and success that the Dark Knight did.

Also I personally like Captain America much more than Thor, I just knew Cap better and knew virtually nothing about thor that i didn't read in dark reign.

Making a Fantastic Four movie and basing it on Ultimate Fantastic Four is like rebooting Indiana Jones and basing it on Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and not Raiders of the Lost Ark.

This is EXACTLY how I feel!!!! I wrote an article similarly detailing how DC could advance past the MCU by using this to their advantage a while ago. That's why I personally like the MCU films of 2014 more than the MCU film of 2012. They still feel like Marvel movies (and by now it's too late to change that) but still felt different. A political thriller and a space opera. I wish Iron Man could've been hard sci-fi, Cap was a War film, and THOR was a fantasy/sword and sandal film. 2011 is my least favorite year jn Marvel Studios history because I was disappointed.

That's why Fant4stic so much. People complain about it being Interstellar + Chronicle....do they not realize what F4 is!!!! They are explorers and scientists (Interstellar) that gain superpowers from a cosmic force (Chronicle). What else could you want. The original F4 comics were "sci-fi horror" stories. They dealt with horrible transformations and portrayed it as scary not as "Cool I have powers. Let's be heroes!" This is exactly what Stan Lee and Kirby intended but since the 60's were a campy time it's kind of masked and further writers kept the campy, causing the F4 to be synonymous with that.

@DrunkenNukem They're only different because Ultimate Fantastic Four is way worse than Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Why one would try to adapt the worst version of something is beyond me.

I disagree with some of the minor opinions here, but I here with the broad statement. I too, am super excited for The Fantastic Four, it's been my most anticipated since Trank was announced as director, it's been sad seeing hate for something that I know will be great. Dance thing happened with the past two X-Films, and those are now regarded as some if the best cbm's if all time!

Well there were Nazi's but probably not shown in the way you wanted and you actually expected to see Red Skull to cut his face off?

"I think the very thing they're aiming for, which is why there has been so little info about the movie out there, is to be different from what people normally would expect from a superhero movie. It is trying to distinguish itself, to stand out and attempt a fresh take. That's how it seems to me anyway."

^^^^^^This!

Oh and you're not alone ;)

I thought about this and I really don't know how new Trank's Fantastic 4 will be....

It really feels like it will be a Fantastic 4 movie in the tone of X-Men: DOFP.... I hope I'm wrong and there's more too it.... But, this also feels like it could be Fox's Iron Man, and really focus on experiments and science.

The tone makes it feel way too serious for the Fantastic 4 for me, but it has potential, looking forward to seeing what Trank will do

I have to wholeheartedly disagree with you on Cap 1 I loved that movie and it is one of my favorite MCU films. I love the movie because it shows us the real Steve Rodgers in all his glory and isn't afraid to do so. In today's world we are all so cynical and jaded that we can't see a character like Steve Rodgers and take him without laughing. Joe Johnston though took Steve completely at face value with not a single hint of irony from him. There was never a moment where we laughed at good ole boy scout Steve Rodgers or were we suppose to think he was corny. He really is just one of the greatest men alive altruistic, self sacrificing, humble, protector of the ideal America is suppose to stand for and this is all before he had his powers. The skinny asthmatic kid who wanted nothing more then to serve his country and help his fellow soldiers did everything he could to join the army. I love the film to death and while yes the third act is rushed the first two acts are perfect and completely overshadow any faults with the third act.

Now onto Fantastic Four while I didn't hate the trailer nothing about it stood out at all at least to me. Nothing about it really felt like in anyway it was about the Fantastic Four and could be titled "Unnamed Sci-Fi Film". Any future trailers are going to have to do a whole hell of a lot to change me from my stance because I have not been a fan of this film from the beginning.

You share all the same opinions with me. I thought thor and cap could've been much better if they played their strengths( fantasy or war). I agree 100% although I think TDK series was good because it became Ingulfed in the Crime-Drama genre. FF is a CBM I've been waiting for in a long time

@pesmerga44 @gliderman I every much enjoyed captain america, I just thought it was going to be more unique than it ended up. I was disappointed, but that doesn't mean I didn't like it. I might have come off too harsh.

And don't take what I said as some attack on you for not loving Captain America as much as I did because that would be beyond stupid of me. Just stating my opinion creating dialogue and debate the whole reason for the editorial section on this site to exist.

@pesmerga44 Oh I know, it's just a lot of people took my criticism as me not liking these movies. I see why people would get that, but I love these movies.
gamecreatorjj
gamecreatorjj - 1/29/2015, 11:12 AM
@Dandy my point was that even though all examples fit, they are still just sci fi action movies with those elements thrown in. Thor isn't a fantasy epic like Lord of the Rings, it's an action sci fi movie with fantasy elements. First Avenger is sci fi action set in WWII. and while this works for these movies because of the universe they are set in, I have been wanting something more unique from my comic book movies.
