Why I think The Fantastic Four needs an Incredible Hulk style reboot!

Why I think The Fantastic Four needs an Incredible Hulk style reboot!

Why I think the franchise needs to be started from scratch as well as my picks for an (almost) new cast...

2005's 'The Fantastic Four' was a major disappointment to me. At the time the film was released I was reading the amazing FF run by writer Mark Waid and artist Mike Wieringo and was hoping that the film would translate from page to screen just as I had imagined. Sadly as anyone who has seen it knows, it was mostly rubbish.

The Fantastic Four's origins are'nt all that complicated. Here is the Wikipedia version, "The Fantastic Four were formed when during an outer space test flight in an experimental rocket ship, the four were bombarded by a storm of cosmic rays. Upon crash landing back on Earth, the four astronauts found themselves transformed with bizarre new abilities. The four then decide to use their powers for good as superheroes." Although the film didnt deviate too far from this, in my opinion the origins of the characters themselves were what was screwed up rather than how they got their powers.

As with last year's Hulk film a retelling of the FF's origins could easily be done over the beginning credits. These flashbacks could quickly establish the relationships between the characters better than the previous films (Reed and Ben's friendship, Sue being a mother figure to her brother Johnny-I was disappointed that this wasnt at all portrayed in the previous two films) Victor's gypsy origins and his meeting with Reed could also be quickly shown as well as his subsequent scarring from an experiment that Reed advised him against doing. At this point older versions of the soon to be FF could be shown taking a ship into outer space, being bombarded with cosmic rays and finally crashing to Earth with newfound abilities. As a last shot I think it would be perfect for a group of monitors showing the now costumed heroes in news reports after various heroic deeds. The camera should then pan back to reveal none other than a fully costumed Dr.Doom watching and biding his time for revenge...

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was a much better film but was still not the FF I wanted to see on the big screen. I hated the fact that Von Doom was basically made of metal but when in the sequel the metal was peeled off and clearly left him scarred I thought this was the perfect chance for the character until The Silver Surfer fixed this (more than likely only so they could put Julian McmMahon's face on screen) In some respects there is no reason why the events of this film couldnt have still happenned but as in The Incredible Hulk, just be forgotten or not referred back to (I mean Galactus being a cloud? Seriously?) I dont think it can be argued that this film did actually kill off the franchise especially as it has previously been reported that as Rise of the Silver Surfer grossed less than the first film, 20th Century Fox was unsure of the series' future, and no script is in development. As well as this, in March 2008, Chris Evans revealed, "I'm pretty sure we won’t do another one. I’m assuming that one is a closed book."

Anyway, here are my cast picks for a new Fantastic Four movie as apart from Chris Evans and perhaps Michael Chiklis (whose voivce alone seems a good fit for The Thing even if you dont like his acting skills) I didnt like any of the actors chosen for the film as I just dont feel they fit the part in comparison for example of Robert Downey Jnr as Tony Stark/Iron Man or Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

I think Hugh Laurie would be perfect for Reed Richards as he is a more mature actor than Ioan Gruffudd and despite the fact that he is British can do a much better American accent than Gruffudd (and personally as I am Welsh as well I could hear the Welsh accent slip through many times). I know some people will say that he is perhaps too old but in the comics Reed is quite a bit older than Sue and its not like Laurie is all that old anyway! Anyone who has seen House will know that Hugh Laurie is an amazing actor and apart from a few obvious aspects, the charatcer of House is in many ways similar to Reed and so Laurie could easily be convincing as a genius whilst also maintaing some humour in the character.

As hot as Jessica Alba is, she isnt really that great an actress and as much as I enjoyed looking at her in the previous FF films she was more eye candy than the mature Susan Richards even from the earliest FF comics. I didnt find her in the least convincing as a scientist and couldnt even imagine her having kids in future films..! Im sure many of you guys will have a better idea of who could be Sue Storm but I think Brittany Murphy suits the role visually as well as coming across as more mature than Alba in the films that i have seen her in.

To me Chris Evans was a perfect Johnny Storm and I just hope that if his character was written a little better he could be convinced to return to the franchise.

Again as I said above Michael Chiklis was at the least a good voice for The Thing but this time round if it was done well I would prefer to perhaps see a CG Thing more faithful to The Thing from the comic books.

Finally, for Dr. Doom I dont think it really matters especially as the comic book Doom constantly wears a mask. An iconic voice would be enough in my opinion and after hearing his voice work in the Playstation 3 game, Killzone 2 I think that Brian Cox (Stryker from X-2) might be a good choice. However, if any of you have better ideas Id love to know!

As for the plot of a new Fantastic Four film, I think it would be interesting to maybe delve into the Negative Zone as this could open the door wide to classic villains such as Blastaar and Annihilus as well as further down the line perhaps even Captain Mar-Vell...Dr.Doom could play a role in the film but perhaps a minor one setting up a bigger part in a sequel as he has been heavily involved in the last two and a break wouldnt necessarily be a bad thing.

So, I'd love to know what you all think! Does the Fantastic Four need a reboot? Would you want the original cast or a new one like the few actors I've suggested above? And should their origins be retold and what villains or tories would you like a new movie to focus on? Imsure some of you will agree with me and maybe more than some will disagree, either way I look forward to your feedback..!

I liked both movies too, werent great but not so bad that i havent watched them both about six times each. i agree that they could do with getting somebody else for reed and sue. everyone complains but i actually liked the guy they got for doom sounded good bit like he did in the cartoons. know what i blame the writers actually. Get better writers

bit of a random change of subject sorry, but does anybody know what the ending of tim burtons planet of the apes is all about?

I like the casting ideas, maybe this go around they'll actually have Dr. Doom have a flippin' accent! That is of course if the reboot, which honestly I'm getting tired, just give me something new, MOVE ON!

Adrian Pasdar's voice sounds even less like Doom than McMahon. We need someone with the look, and a great voice. I don't know who yet, but there's someone out there.

EvilEd2000 - It's been a while since I saw it but if memory serves me right it goes a little something like this -

Instead of crashing on a future Earth (like the original) he has crashed on a random planet (still in the future). Back in his "own time" the mother ship crashes onto the same planet. The experimental apes from the ship evolve into what he encounters in the future.

Does that clear it up for you?

Back on topic

Hugh Laurie as Mr Fantastic = interesting choice and could work.

Brittany Murphy as Sue? No, she must be Harley Quinn. I agree with your thoughts on why we need a new person there. Charlize theron wouldn't be bad.

Torch and Thing are both ok if (like you said) written well enough.

Brian Cox would be a good voice but you'd need to do it Vader style with another body. Liam Neeson, Jeremy Irons, Hugo Weaving, John Malkovicthfcbsdfjhbvrj. Anyone with a good voice and no "I want my face on screen!" ego can pull this role off.

Hugh Laurie rocks, good cast there. Brittany Murphy for Sue Storm? I'd rather keep Alba than use Murphy.

I absolutely love the current cast. Yes their movies were not monumental but they were good enough for me to watch them at least five times each. I really think the reason why people are so unsatisfied with the FF is because it's softcore action. These days everyone wants hardcore action like the new batman series or even the Blade and the second Spiderman movies. The FF franchise doesn't need to be rebooted. It needs to finished. Make it a trilogy. I liked the Namor (Submariner) Idea. Cast Jonathan Rhys Myers and make it as dark, bloody and gory as possible. That way they give everyone what they want. You want better Fantastic Four movies? GET BETTER WRITERS NOT ACTORS!!!

howlett04, i get that but then at the end does he go back in time to earth and the apes have taken over it too an there's a statue of the general ape dude who he just got overthrown in the future on the other planet...what happened there?

also, anyone see the love scene in the extended version of the first fantastic four movie where she gives the thing a sponge bath. what was that all about? brilliance.

Well some of you may know this but FOX only has the rights to the FF for a few more years, and the cast don't particularly want to do anoher one. So it looks like MARVEL will be getting the rights back around 2012.

ThunderCougarFalconBird - 5/19/2009, 11:19 AM
iNsaneMilesy - does that tie in with the end of the world (apparently 2012)? The 1st films were a bit lame and the next one will bring about the apocalypse (not the X-Men one)!

WOW LOL there is no way in hell that House would play Mr. Fantastic LOL he’s too old dude lol and Doom? Don’t even get me started on that…but anyways, I kinda like the Fantastic Four films; they’re not the best comic-based films, but entertaining haha but if they did get a reboot, ALL actors from the previous film would be replaced. And a whole new different storyline would emerge. But will they make a reboot? Who knows…?

Interesting choice in hugh laurie, not sure, but intrigued. Brittany is a better actor but you have the exact same problem as with Alba- What's with all the girly girls, you need a WOMAN for Sue Storm, she has to be a mother-figure as well as a sex symbol. Same problem I had with Halle Barry as Ororo, just not the right type.

I do not agree. I like both movies and really liked the chemistry of the cast. I do not know where some of the information you have came from, but I have listen to the commentaries on the DVDs from the cast. I did not get a sense that anyone on the cast was trying to avoid making a third film. I do recall that Jesseca Alba just had a baby, and Michael Chiklis was finishing up shooting on the FX show "the Shield." all the actors seemed really commited to the role from their commentaries on the DVD. Also, they said in the commentaries that Julian McMahon wanted to do the "Latverian" accent and even shot some of the scenes with it, but the producers felt it didn't work well with the script. I think Julian McMahon did a great job as Dr Doom. They said in the second film that Julian was shooting his show "Nip and Tuck" and Dr Doom wasn't going to play a big role in the second film, which worked out great for the movie. Also, the film director, Tim Story intentionally kept Galactus vague because they are making a "Silver Surfer" movie. They did show his helmet twice in the film, but they said marvel wanted to moderndise Galactus. If you really watch the film, they clearly showed that there was something inside the cloud, but the writers wanted to save that for another movie. I think it all depends on what Avi Arad wants to do, but Marvel is having some financing issues with the slow economy. I personally think it will be a mistake to make a new origin movie. I think they need to just make another movie. The main problem many of these movies are having is that they all were effected by the writers strike and the warning of a SAG strike. It is hard to get bank financing, with a strike looming.
Also, the idea that the film barely made 20 million is pure imagination. According to IMDB:
FF1 made on opening weekend: $56,061,504 in the USA (this does not include non-US markets).
FF1 went on to gross: $154,695,569 for its' box office run and this does not include what it grossed in DVD sales. The film cost $100,000,000 to make.
FF2 ROTSS made on opening weekend: $58,051,684 in the USA (this does not include non-US markets).
FF2 went on to gross: $131,920,333 for its' box office run and this does not include what it made in DVD sales. The film cost $130,000,000 to make.

Both films more than made thier profit in merchandise sales from games, toys, and DVD's.

Based on actual numbers both movies were very successful. I think the delay in the third movie has more to do with a slow economy and the principle actress had a baby. This does not include a writiers strike and a SAG strike.

there is not going to be a thrid film, its been reported in several different places that none of the cast want to do another one and the film has mostly been so hated by critics its unlikely fox want to do another anyway-thats why it needs the reboot!

and besides, for any fan of the FF comic book, both films were an insult-far too childish and badly written! the galactus thing was terrible, there is no excuse about saving him for a silver surfer movie-he should have been in FF-not some cloud with a vague outline of his helmet!

Besides its not Marvel who funds the movie-its fox so it has nothing to do with the slow economy! like the awful zak penn (who wrote the first FF film but is sadly-in the worst news ever-working on the avengers) tim story should be kept away from comic book movies-hes an awful director-his directing style is almost as stiff as albas acting skills!
