Disney is flying back to Neverland! Deadline reports the studio is moving forward with a new live-action adaptation of the boy who never grew up, and they've tapped Pete's Dragon director David Lowery to spearhead the film. Screenwriter Toby Halbrooks, who also worked on Disney's remake of Pete's Dragon (set for release later this year), is on board to write the script. A Tinkerbell film with Reese Witherspoon attached is also reportedly in development.
Disney's latest take on J.M. Barrie's classic story follows a slew of previous adaptations, including its earlier 1953 animated film, Steven Spielberg's Hook, and Warner Bros.' prequel, Pan, which flopped at the box office when it was released late last year. This new film is another in the growing list of Disney live-action remakes, which also includes Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson.
