Guillermo Del Toro Insists That PACFIFC RIM 2 Is Still Happening

Pacific Rim 2 has had quite the journey so far. After Universal and Legendary Pictures delayed the Pacific Rim sequel indefinitely, and later removed it off their release calendar, director Guillermo del Toro revealed that he was still working on the project. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it.” Del Toro said in a interview with EW back in September.

Now, THR claims that Pacific Rim 2 “is off the table indefinitely”, and Del Toro is leaving to “choose his next project.” However Guillermo Del Toro, via Twitter still insisted that the sequel is still a go!

While there is every possibility that Pacific Rim 2 will get greenlit at some point in the future, it just doesn’t look that way at this point. Here’s the statement that Universal released last September.

Legendary’s ‘Pacific Rim 2,’ originally scheduled for release on August 4, 2017, will be redated at a later time. The filmmakers, Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having ‘Pacific Rim 2,’ the sequel to 2013’s ‘Pacific Rim,’ which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of ‘Pacific Rim’ so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”

If you remember, Del Toro also said via Twitter that he’s submitted the film’s script, and is waiting an approval by the studio.

Up until Yesterday, he’s just been rambling…

Guess I should post this here too.

"China’s Wanda Acquires Legendary Entertainment for $3.5 Billion"

You hear that? That is the sound of Pacific Rim 2 happening.

Godzilla and Pacific Rim did VERY well in China with their respective openings. PR actually made more in China than it did in the US. Now that a Chinese conglomerate owns half of Legendary you can bet a sequel to Pacific Rim is happening.

I'm sure the only reason it was originally off the table was because Legendary was depending on Universal for funding but after Del Toro's recent film Crimson Peak was a (undeserved) flop, which was a Universal/Legendary production, Universal saw PR2 as too big a risk.

I love Del Toro, but Hellboy should be carried on, rebooted or reinvigorated by someone else.

By this guy: Adam Wingard

That's a franchise whose sequel I want desperately. I want Pacific Rim 2 as well but Hellboy has some serious unfinished business.

no.

i would rather see "The strange case of dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde" adaptation or that abonded Tom Cruise project called "At the Mountains of Madness".

Or maybe ... just maybe ... since Del Toro couldn't do the JLA:Dark he should direct a tv pilot for "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"

Say what you will but PR was the perfect call back to old Kaiju films and giant mech anime. It did what the recent Godzilla reboot was too afraid to do and that was go full out with the action and monster brawls.
