FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD Producer On Jude Law's Portrayal Of Young Albus Dumbledore

Last week we got our first glimpse of the cast of the Fantastic Beasts sequel, now officially titled Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The photo provided us a look at returning stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, Ezra Miller as Credence, Alison Sudol as her sister Queenie, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, and Johnny Depp as the titular villain Gellert Grindelwald.

Perhaps the most intriguing star in the photo, though, was Jude Law as the younger Albus Dumbledore. The actor will play a younger version of the beloved wizard, and fans seem to agree he has absolutely nailed the reimagining of the iconic character, who was played by Richard Harris and, later, Michael Gambon in the original Harry Potter films.

But while the image gave us a glimpse of younger Dumbledore's appearance, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald executive producer David Heyman spoke more of the character's personality, what Jude Law brings to the character, and how this younger version of Dumbledore differs from the older Headmaster we met in the previous Harry Potter films.

“One of the reasons we chose Jude is he has many of the qualities we find in Dumbledore in the Potter films. He’s got authority, he’s got a twinkle in his eye, he’s sometimes a bit elliptical," Heyman told Entertainment Weekly.

He continued: "So you have that but also have this youthful energy and jubilance. So he brings that twinkle, mischief, authority, and power, but at the same time brings far more youthful energy to the film. You understand why he would be your favorite teacher and be someone you believe is an extraordinary wizard.”

Jude Law figures to play a prominent role in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Gindelwald, as the synopsis specifically mentions Albus Dumbledore enlisting Newt Scamander to help thwart Grindelwald's evil plans.

“Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.”

I've read all the HP books some years ago, but I literally can't remember anything regarding the Dumbledore-Grindelwald thing.

Which book should I re-read if I wanna catch up?

@DavidGray - It’s been a while since I’ve read them, but I’m pretty sure he doesn’t come in until Deathly Hallows, the last one.

@DavidGray - Ugh! I saw it on Friday. The movie was fun for what it was but......

After seeing the scenes that were cut out and what we saw in BvS I can clearly see what movie we should have received.

Such a shame that WB executives just botched it again. Also Whendon and Elfman are hacks!!!!!!!

He even looks like Dumble.
Ready for this Potter craze to die off, so we can get a real Books of Magic Tim Hunter series.

@rabid -

Forget it. Harry Potter is Tum Hunter. There's no way they're gonna retell the story.

@Battabing - They will someday. I'm hoping we can at least get Hunter in the new Dr 13 series.

Wb better hold onto this franchise for dear life, both DC and Lego are underperforming and they've ran out of Middle Earth movies to explore

I wonder why they didn't go with long-haired young Dumblez.

I wonder if they will explore Dumbledore and Grindelwald's romantic relationship. o_O

@IctyoSapien - Was that actually hinted at in the books or just fan fiction?

@DavidGray - @IctyoSapien Rowling revealed that Dumbledore was in fact gay but that Grindelwald wasn't necessarily. It's ambiguous whether Grindelwald was gay or not but the nature of their relationship is more of Dumbledore having affection for him while Grindelwald used that and lured Dumbledore to his side until the death of Dumbledore's sister where they ultimately part ways.

DavidGray - 11/20/2017, 10:59 AM
@Danbito - Yeah, I remember Rowling saying he was gay, but the whole Dumblewald thing (Idk if it's even called that lol) seems like expo facto fanfic on behalf of some readers.

Hawknaba - 11/20/2017, 12:11 PM
@DavidGray - When she did reveal that though she said she'd hinted at it in the books, with Dumbledores "enchantment" with Grindelwald.

I think the suggestion was that Grindelwald wasn't gay but was playing to Dumbledore's attraction, i think we'll probably see gay Dumbledore tho
DavidGray
DavidGray - 11/20/2017, 12:14 PM
@Hawknaba - Ah. Didn't know that!
