THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER Comic-Con Trailer Brings Sauron And Fire To Middle-Earth

A third trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debuted at the San Diego Comic-Con earlier today, and as well as teasing Sauron's rise to power, we get to see a familiar, fiery face...

Today's Comic-Con celebrations kicked off with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and we now have yet another trailer for the franchise's highly anticipated small screen debut.

There's a lot to delve into here, though it feels like this preview only scratches the surface of what's to come in a story that will span five seasons. Noteworthy moments include Galadriel seemingly making her first contact with a Palantír (an orb that shows glimpses of the future) and Sauron starting to make his presence felt across Middle-earth...looking rather different, we must say!

However, one particularly cool reveal right at the end of this latest sneak peek shows the Balrog's fiery return; remember, that creature was the cause of Gandalf the Grey's apparent demise in The Fellowship of the Ring, and it appears Moria is once again coming under fire (sorry).

In all seriousness, we can't wait to find out how else this series will inform what we saw in Peter Jackson's beloved trilogy. In fairness, though, it also looks set to carve out its own unique place in this franchise's history with heaps of new characters and locations we've previously only visited on the page.

The show, adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's iconic series of novels, takes place during the Second Age, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. This story is set to follow a cast made up of established and new characters as they "confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth" (a.k.a. Sauron).

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

The series boasts a massive ensemble, while J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay are set to serve as showrunners. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premieres on September 2, later this year, so keep checking SFFGazette.com for updates as we have them.

I don't know why but this just seemed appropriate for this.

@AmazingFILMporg - yes I'm really hyped. Maybe we get lucky and both this AND House of Dragon are good and we get two great fantasy shows this fall.

The better of all the trailers. Still on the fence though.

@vegetaray - for me it's that same artifical-ish look Wheel of Time also had. It all looks too clean

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah I think that might be it for me too…It has that heavy CGI feel the Hobbit movies had, while I was fully expecting the effects to have the more practical feeling the original trilogy had…

@vegetaray - the action pieces do look cool, but it does indeed miss that feeling the original trilogy had

@bkmeijer1 - the cinematography in this trailer makes Wheel of Time look like child's play. That show looked awful. Lot of CGI here but this looks far far better IMO.

@vegetaray - the orcs are practical. The characters and costumes are all practical. The landscapes outside of aerial location shots simply have to be cgi.
