RAMstar Studios is hard at work on their Wizard of Oz prequel, How The Wizard Came To Oz. The film, which is based on the 1991 book by author Donald Abbot, focuses on showman Oscar Diggs and his journey towards becoming the "mighty" Wizard met by Dorothy in the beloved original story.

The movie has a premise that seems very similar to Disney's 2013 prequel, Oz the Great and Powerful, but producer BJ Plott has promised that their film will be a “different story than Disney’s version,” namely focusing more on Oscar Diggs' life from childhood. “It takes you on a journey from the Wizard’s childhood, through all the challenges he faces along the way to becoming the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz," Plott said in an interview with Flicksided. "This story brings insight into where all the characters in Oz originated.”

Casting is still underway, with Plott confirming that RAMstar has spoken to representatives for Amy Adams and Margot Robbie (as the good and wicked witches respectively). They are also still in pursuit of Nathan Fillion for the main role. “There are a lot of actors that would best suit the role. But for me, I feel Nathan is the best choice," Plott said. "I love his show Castle. That character is similar to the wizard.”

The film will have a PG-13 rating but will also explore some darker territory. “We’re thinking something similar to Harry Potter or the Gotham TV show,” Plott said. Production is expected to begin in 2017, filming in Los Angeles and Australia with a release planned for late 2018. Check out a design for the Wizard's costume and two fan-art posters below!

Discover how everyone's favorite humbug first found his way to Oz! When circus stuntman Oscar Diggs goes aloft in a balloon and is blown over the rainbow to the land of Oz at the time when both wicked witches are still alive and kicking, he's in for the biggest challenge of his life! Through a delicious set of misunderstandings, the people of Oz mistake Oscar for a mighty wizard and Oscar, ever the showman, plays right along. Staying one jump ahead of the two wicked witches is no easy feat, but Oscar's wit and bag of tricks help him carry the day!

Honestly, seems like an odd thing to want to make. I get it when two studios release similar films near one another (White House Down/Olympus Has Fallen, BvS/Civil War, etc), but these movies are just close enough in release (within a decade) but not close enough to warrant competition. If you want people to stop going to see movies because "Hollywood is out of ideas," this oughta do the trick.

I couldn't even get through the Disney version, it seems a HUGE risk to make such a similar project to a movie that underperformed from the biggest studio in the world. Their casting choices, though pretty far fetched, are kind of intriguing though.

I've written this before but again it is relevant.

Instead of remaking a great film or a prequel that can ruin the mystery, they should remake a film that had a great concept or script but was ruined because of studio interference, the script got butchered with too many cooks spoiling the broth or for some reason just didn't work.
That way if it is a success everyone will be happy.

@SimplyAz - I agree... they should re do Batman and Robin... the writers were shit, and so were the rest of the production crew. Clooney was ok though ;)

@captquirk -

Ha ha...LOL.

Irony is that in a well made Batman movie, Clooney would have been the perfect Bruce Wayne.

No interest whatsoever. Unless Nathan Fillion is the lead. But even then I hate that this is being made. The Wizard of Oz is classic, fine. But it's not even that good a story. And how the character who was in it for a few minutes needs two big budget films to tell how he became a pretend wizard is beyond me. Can they really not find a better story to use that money, time and manpower on? People are looking for originality at the moment. Everything feels like a rehash, a flavourless, spiritless product, not an experience. My two favourite films in recent memory are Guardians of the Galaxy and Ex Machina. They gave me something fresh. I don't want to see a retelling of a prequel of an adaptation of a book.

something similar to Harry Potter or the Gotham TV show

There's a huge gap between these two. Acting wise, writing, directing etc.

@Kevwebsz - But in terms of their aesthetic, there really isn't, and that's what he was talking about.

how many times are they going rehash that boring Wizard story? they should set their sights on a property with elements that haven't been explored, yet. i could see the "Dorothy Must Die" books really working as films or a streaming series.
