In 2008, Summit Entertainment purchased the film rights to Highlander, with plans of rebooting the franchise. Soon they hired Iron Man screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. The following year they selected Fast & Furious director Justin Lin, but dropped out due to other projects. Lin, was replaced by 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, but he too would leave the project, citing creative differences. Along that journey, Ryan Reynolds named was attached to star, but he too exited the Highlander reboot. That brings us up to speed.

Today, Deadline is reporting that Cedric Nicolas-Troyan has landed the directing gig. The Highlander reboot will be his directorial debut. He is known for his visual effects work on The Ring, One Hour Photo, and Snow White and the Huntsman, where he also served as a second unit director.

“I have been working on my pitch for this since the summer, and when I got there I met the original producer and I just started geeking out and he loved it,” Nicolas-Troyan told Mike Fleming Jr.. “The first movie came out when I was a teenager in France and it was one of my favorite films of those years. I loved the series also, they shot a lot of it in France, on the Seine River. My first reaction, like everybody else, was, really, do we need a remake? Then I read the script, and I thought about how Russell Mulcahy was this super visual video director who brought the pulse of the 80s to the film so well. I started thinking about taking those great characters and matching them with a modern, visceral take, and then I was in love with the idea and I just went for it.”

I like this director. The idea of bringing in someone slightly more unknown to direct Highland is a good idea. He is a huge fan of the first film which happens to be the best in the whole series. I have know doubts that he will deliver. Hopefully they get someone who fits the role of Connor Macloud. Ryan Reynolds is a terrible choice for the title role. My dream choice would be Thomas Jane. He looks like an American version of Christopher Lambert. Let's pray they don't make an abomination of a Highlander movie.

How I missed the visual griminess in action films. HD & 3D is great, but sometimes they don't have to be so DAM CRISP!

Clancy Brown as the Kurgan is one of the all time great villains on film. The driving scene alone with the old lady on the hood of the car gets him in the top 10. The church scene makes it a top five performance.

Call me crazy, but how about getting an actual Scot to play McLeod? Gerard Butler perhaps? Nah... That's just silly.

By the way, yes Tom Jane looks a hell of a lot like Christopher Lambert. So what? Win Butler from Arcade Fire looks just like Clancy Brown.

--------------

Fassbender as Connor MacLeod, that actually doesn't sound too bad. Just as long as he can pull off a Scotch accent, then he'd be perfect for the role.

@ Nailbiter111 - Thank you. I've liked McKidd for the part for a while, and Banderas is just a given. Momoa may not have had the best luck as Conan (bad script) but HE wasn't bad in the part and he'd be a great Kurgan!!

If you cannot appreciate the original Highlander then your opinion is worthless.
That movie is unique, original & well made. Directors Cut is great.

"I have something to say! It's better to burn out than to fade away! -Kurgan. Happy Hallowe'en ladies!" Fenderbass or Tom Hardy for Conor and maybe Jason Momoa,Dolph Lundgren, Joe Manganiello, or Karl Urban for The Kurgan. Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman,Jeff Bridges,Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Kingsly, or Kevin Spacey for Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez! Gemma Arterton for Heather. Scarlett Johansson,Jennifer Lawrence,or Olivia Wilde for Brenda J. Wyatt. I'll see it twice.

Who did Summit buy the rights from? Just out of curiosity..

On a more to-the-point note, this will either go very well, or very badly.
