***There might be some SPOILERS in this review***
Let me start of by stating that, I still think Louis Leterrier is a pretty good/decent director, the guy's very talented, and I admire two movies within of his work. The first being "The Incredible Hulk, and the other being "Unleashed" (aka "Danny the Dog).
The flaws with this movie were within the script and altering of the story, there wasnt enough character development, and also there was bit of over-acting in certain scenes. You know how they say it takes about the first 15-20 minutes of a movie to grab your attention, this movie take all that tention and slowly destroys it through-out the story arc. The movie is nothing like the 1981, "Clash of the Titans"...which I am a huge fan of. The movie bores you through its special effects, and twisted plot.
The problem is no component of the movie stands out over the rest.
Yes, the CGI effects are very good, but they lack a "wow" factor; this is not so much the fault of moviemakers as it is of audiences who have become so blasé by special effects that they consider most of what they now see routine.
The characters are dull and boring, and have no individuality. Sam Worthington is mostly a repressed, or slightly glum of a Perseus, the demigod chosen to save mankind right? He neither looks nor acts the hero! Whined through the whole movie about, how hes going to do everything alone. This is exactly, what happens when you change the origina of a story. Perseus, took the help from Zeus in the mytholocgial story, and even in Clash 1981, in this movie he some sort of "pride-ful warrior" or a lone wolfe should I say of a character, who ends up creates a double standard towards himself taking the Gods help...using the Sword and Pegasus.
The only two characters who even come close to exhibiting a personality are the warrior Draco, played by a buffed-up Mads Mikkelsen, the villain La Chiffre opposite Daniel Craig's James Bond in "Casino Royale." And Gemma Arterton, who was the character "Io" (that could be because, she was the prettiest girl in the film). But, the movie isnt supposed to be about her, what is she doing in the movie in the first place? She wasnt in the original. Anyways, her character was amusing at first and slowly dies down as the story goes on.
There were other things also, such as why the other GODS were just standing around like they had nothing better to do? Apollo and Posiden had two lines in the movie. Why Liam Neeson is a pompous Zeus, while Ralph Fiennes hisses his overripe dialogue as Hades. Pegasus, showing up in random scenes. The tammed scorpion in the city of Argos during the chase scene between hades and Perseus while riding pegasus (by the way, he never rode that horse in the movie until now). Calibos is Acrisius? There is alot more, that I can state, but I dont feel like writing all that down at this moment, for it will make this review even longer than it is. This movie was almost like a FAST- PACED CLUSTER [frick] OF MANY EVENTS FIT ALL INTO ONE.
Also, Adding 3-D to an already filmed 2-D movie creates problems similar to those in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland." It is difficult to create the correct perspective if a film is not planned and shot in 3-D.
Thus while some of it works, most of the 3-D appears gimmicky and unnecessary. Plus, it puts a strain on the eyes.
the greek created epic tales about Gods and Men, and their journey among themselves, and each other. This movie wasnt an epic tale, it was an EPIC DISASTER. It would piss off any God or Goddess watching it. This story lacks inspiration, humor, pacing and that spark that makes us applaud and bring joy to our faces.
I recommend those of you that have NOT watched it to wait for it to come out on DVD, or Blu-ray, or find a source that can give it to you for free. Save your 11.50-15.00 and just wait for the "Trash of the Titans" to hit in your homes near you. This movie sums up everything that's wrong with Hollywood right now. it is filled with meaningless action, and it also feels like not one single person involved with the production could give a shit about it.
I rate this film 2.5/5 stars. 50%. (And thats me being Generous)
