Willy Wonka Kicks Iron Man Out of Oz!

Willy Wonka Kicks Iron Man Out of Oz!

A story at The Hollywood Reporter notes that Robert Downey, Jr. has dropped out of Sam Raimi's Oz, the Great and Powerful, and could be replaced by Johnny Depp in the title role.

Designed to be a sequel of sorts to The Wizard of Oz, the proposed film tells the "origin" of the Wizard, the Hollywood Reporter explaining that he is "a young illusionist with a grandiose attitude who is forced to flee a traveling circus. His hot air balloon is swept up by a tornado to the land of Oz, which is run by two magical wicked witches."

The film doesn't have a start or release date, but the Joe Roth production is considered a high priority at Universal, which would like for shooting to begin during the second half of this year. If Depp does indeed play the Wizard, it's likey he would move on to Oz straight from Dark Shadows, and prior to The Lone Ranger or Pirates of the Caribbean 5.

Total conjecture: This is the second project that Downey has dropped out of following Gravity, and one has to wonder if the actor just needs to step back from the breakneck pace he's been on for the past few years since the release of Iron Man. If so, and given his background, it's probably the smartest thing he could do. At the same time, one does have to wonder how long Depp can keep up this non-stop filming schedule he seems to be on.

I like Johnny Depp, but I'm a little tired of every other whimsical role going to him. I'd like someone else to step up and give it a try or be given a chance to do so. I guess hollywood never gets tired of casting the same ole' same ole', hardly any room for no name actors anymore.

Seriously, they need to stop casting Depp in every other movie. Its ridiculous. He's so overrated it's disgusting!

They cast Depp in everything because he sells tickets. It could be a film version of "Shit in a Box" and Depp would make it one of the highest grossing movies of the year. Hollywood is so concerned about getting a return on their dollars...it's sad but its the way it is.

I dont think Depp is overrated, the guy is a Superb Actor. I just wish Hollywood would be more originals with movies. Some movies shouldn't be re made. I mean come on Oz? Like JohnTom88 said he should be doing a Dr strange movie

Well let's see... Depp was the worst thing about "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory". His weird, Michael Jacksonish portrayal of Willy Wonka was beyond creepy. So maybe he'll destroy OZ, too.

So, over the course of 6 or 7 years, he'll have been Willy Wonka, Jack Sparrow, Sweeney Todd, Mad Hatter, Barnabas Collins, The Wizard of OZ and Tonto.

I don't know about anyone else, but I really dislike recurring actors in the roles of popular fictional characters. It kinda takes away from the movies for me when several characters have the same face.

It would be like if one actor played 7 different superheroes in 7 years.

He's a great actor and all, but so are a lot of others.

Hollywood seems to be suffering from 'Toomuchdeppitis' and has a chronic case of 'Unoriginalityosis'!

take a look into theatrical history. actors like Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff would take all the original horror roles because they were great character actors and the faces that people associated with. When it came to westerns you think of Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, James Stewart etc. When you wanted action stars in the 80's and 90's people ran to Arnold, Stallone, Van Damme and the rest of the expendables cast. So why is it odd to take someone like Depp and use him for all these character roles? It wasnt too long ago when everyone was sucking him off to be the next riddler either bee-tee-dub.

Why are they making a "prequel" to the Wizard of Oz when there are dozens of canonical L.Frank Baum books about the place? I would love to see Ozma or Tick-Tock with a strong director and adequate budget. This may be heresy to some, but I find the '39 film to be an over-rated pseudo-adaptation of the classic book. But that's just me.

I know Depp is a good actor, but my interest on this project is that Robert Downey Junior is involved.

It was mediocre at parts. Cringe worthy at others and a horrible characterization for characters like Rick Flag and the Joker.

I think Mark Ellis from Collider had the best analogy- it's like going to dinner with a bunch of people you really like but the food isn't good. These characters are great and seeing them interact was great too but the story and movie was lackluster.

Guys, put it This Way: for all the hype these movies get, the great, awesome trailers, nevermind how EPIC a place these characters from Man Of Steel to Suicide Squad hold in our imaginations- To end up being MEDIOCRE 3 Times In A Row or otherwise crucially flawed is INCREDIBLY disappointing. When expectations are rightfully high? Yeah, sorry, but 'Mediocre' may as well be a a D-. Or an F (fergot about 'F' fer a minute there). I can't believe how incompetent the head honchos of DCCU are. At least the worstof MCU films are still fun to watch. These DC films have me sitting in my seat like a tightly coiled up Rattle Snake waiting to spring up and shout "THAT WAS AMAAAAZING!!!" but instead I just find the rattle kind of losing momentum till the films're over.
"And that's all I have to say about that."

-now THERE was a great film, haha-

My problem with the movie is that they seemed to want to squeeze in back stories to characters that I as a casual DC fan already knew the backstories of. I didn't need to know about Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Amanda Waller, or Jokers backstory. However it would have been nice to know more about the other characters. *MINOR SPOILERS* I was super intrigued by the Enchantress early in the movie but they they turned her into the villain and that was disappointing. Also Katana was a interesting character but we got no back story for her either.

Being that Hollywood is so focused on making strong female characters, it seems they missed the boat on this film. Harley Quinn is so dependent on Joker. That to me isn't a problem because that is true to her character. But then we get no back story to Katana and (MINOR SPOILER) Enchantress is turned into the films villain who needs her brother to keep her alive. It's unfortunate they had a team with three female characters and none of them could be an independent & well developed character.

Also... I hated the Joker. His laugh was terrible and I was actually kinda bored with him. The time he shared on screen with Harley seen Jarred Leto out preformed by Margot Robbie. Between her better performance and her skimpy attire, my attention was 100% on her and Joker became a side note.

Plot was kinda bland as well. That could be excused if there was good action scenes and character development, however that didn't happen either. The one actual fight scene in the movie looked more like something out of the DOOM videogame than it did something that should be part of a Hollywood film.

Still, I liked it better than Batman V Superman or Man of Steel. (SPOILERS) The Batman & Flash scenes are the kind of things I'd like to see in their stand alone movies. They also left me wishing we had gotten those moves before Suicide Squad. It would have flushed out some of the characters in this film and allowed more time in the movie for action and plot development.

When my theater puts it on the $5 special, I may have to see Suicide Squad again and see if my opinion changes any on a second viewing. But at this point I feel like its a small improvement and I am just happy they didn't screw up Harley Quinn.
