The Rock Says Jon M. Chu May Not Return For For G.I. JOE 3

G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu will not be back for another installment in lieu of his live-action Jem and the Holograms movie. Franchise star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson says the search is on for a new director and filming could begin in January.

G.I Joe Retaliation sequel The Rock

The first live-action G.I. Joe movie was definitely more "miss" than "hit" with fans and critics alike.  However, its sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, had more of a balanced number of detractors and supporters.  It also earned $375.75 million dollars worldwide on a $130 million dollar production budget.  Naturally, Paramount is working on a third installment and have hired Evan Daugherty (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Snow White and the Huntsman) to write the sequel. So in the third outing, we'll have a new scriptwriter and [probably] a new director.  While the creative talent will be changing over, most of the actors are expected back, including Bruce Willis and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and there are even unconfirmed rumors that Channing Tatum's Duke will also be brought back for a third entry [somehow].  Speaking to Collider to promote Hercules, Johnson shared:

"Yeah, yeah. Well, the idea is that we would start shooting G.I. Joe in January, in the first quarter of next year. That’s the idea. Look, I love Jon, and I think he did a great job. I get it. He had to go on and do something else. By the way, maybe…[He] could be [finished with Jem and the Holograms], right? [Currently] we’re still looking [for a G.I. Joe 3 director], yeah."

If Chu is indeed not coming back for G.I. Joe 3, who do you want to direct?

Retaliation got annoying when every character in the film started throwing Snake Eyes name around like a celebrity.

I've always believed that Bay should have done GI Joe instead of Transformers. The best parts of Transformers are all the military scenes, which is exactly what GI Joe is. The weakest parts of the first Transformers movie are (sadly enough) the parts Spielberg forced in there - "a boy and his car". The subsequent movies spiralled out of control after that. The same could be said for Pearl Harbor. That love triangle (to my knowledge) was forced in there by others. Now as for whether the plot of GI Joe would have been any better with Bay at the helm? I gotta put my hands up for that one. I have no clue.

Sequel was much better. Was actually mad when they killed Duke cause they made me like his friendship with Roadblock. Story was better, characters looked like they should've, and the action was good.

@Doopie That what would be some shit if Bay came in and made it better.

IMO Retaliation wasn't the great neither. Stuff didn't make sense after the Joes got attacked. Cobra leaving Destro behind was stupid as well as the whole thing about the guy who was the president killing snake eyes and storm shadow master.

Rock needs to fire his agent. The guy is so much better than 80% of the movies he stars in and yet he continues to take these utterly crap roles. Hercules is going to bomb and his contribution to the Fast and Furious series is debatable. He ain't getting younger either.

After seeing the new robocop I think Jose Pahdilla should direct the third movie. He could inject some real humanity and depth into the characters while still making a badass action flick. Robocop was a lot more complex and deeper that most think.

@MrSotoMan- Maybe calling it a bomb was too harsh but I imagine that it will do numbers similar to or a little less than Clash of the Titans its first week~$55-$65MM. The next week is Guardians of the Galaxy so its going to need to make that cash up front. International BO is a wildcard these days though!

Please someone, put a bullet in the head of this franchise. As bad as I thought the first one was, Retaliation made the Rise of Cobra look like a flippin' Academy Award winner. I still want my $1.25 back from Redbox for Retaliation dammit.

@MrSotoMan-You make some good points. I think my expectation is that The Rock is the closest thing we have to a Schwarzenegger since, well, Schwarzenegger, with the added bonus of some acting skills. The fact that his movies aren't guaranteed blockbusters like Arnie's were during his heyday I think speaks to the quality of projects that he chooses.

I don't think that the movie will fail because of it's pedigree but rather the audiences appetite for a mediocre sword and sandal movies directed by Ratner.

These Joe films have soooo much potential but they are written & directed very average.
Not awful but far from awesome, this property should be more dynamic & exciting.

The second was better than first so perhaps the third time is the charm.
Please no Tatum,he's garbage & Duke needs to stay dead, show war has casualties.

I was basically dragged into the theater to see the second one, and was surprised how much I actually liked it. I watched the cartoons when I was a kid, and read some of the comics, they kind of nailed the feel of some of the comics. It was fairly self aware, and silly, but I liked that. "Destro... You're out of the band!" That's incredibly 80's and insane! It's so stupid, how could you not love it? And a 9 minute, no dialogue, ninja fight which was really fun to watch. I don't know what some of you are expecting out of a movie based on toys, at least it doesn't have humor that's actually offensive towards your brain like Transformers.
