Is ARROW's Roy Harper the Red Hood?

With rumors running wild among fans that the Red Hood will appear in Arrow I sum up whether or not the encounter could have a more personal meaning to Oliver than most expected. Hit the jump for the full story!

Since the start of the second season, Arrow has had no competition when it comes to the comic book TV shows, leaving Agents of SHIELD trailing. The show's expanding faster than the Flash can run and adding more characters than the JLA. So far not much is known about season 2. Warner Brothers have released a few teasers to whet fans appetites. (SOURCE)

The Context

One of these teasers tells us, "Not all hoods are green". While most believe that this means we'll eventually see Roy Harper be trained by the Green Arrow and join him as the Red Arrow, I'm not 100% sold. In the first season we have seen Oliver's green arrows, Huntress' purple arrows and Merlin's black arrows, so wouldn't the line have been better suited, "Not all arrows are red"? Or is Arrow sending Roy towards a different vigilante role?

Who is the RED HOOD?

Back-story time. Jason Todd was the second Robin and the most violent of Batman's sidekicks. He was grumpy, ruthless and battered criminals with less remorse than his mentor.
Eventually Jason was killed by the Joker after Batman failed to save him... But as is the norm in comic book history, Jason didn't stay 6 foot under for long.
Ra's Al Ghul soon used the Lazarus Pit to revive Todd and as you might expect, Robin came out a little bit begrudged at Bruce's failure. Jason ditched the Robin mantle, replacing it with the Joker's former identity, The Red Hood; Going on to become one of DC's greatest anti-heroes.

Roy Harper?

But where exactly does Arrow's Roy Harper fit in? Recently (Most notably Ep 8), Roy has grown tired of sitting on the side as Oliver's unappreciated leech. One line from episode 8 that rings out loud and clear is Roy telling Oliver, "You can't stop me!" before being shot through the knee. Will this be the final straw for Roy? What will he chose? The pistol and mask or the bow and Arrow?

Take what you will from this mini-editorial, at the end of the day it's nothing more than a fan fantasizing. Arrow has gone from strength to strength in the last year and shows no sign of stopping. With talk of Deathstroke on the horizon and Nightwing showing up it seems WB and CW are serious about expanding their universe, let's just sit back and lap it up.

As always, let your thoughts be heard below and don't pull any punches.

This would be very interesting... Killed by Brother Blood in tonight's ep, then revived and trained by Ra's Al Ghul and then seeks revenge donning the 'Red Hood' mantle.

I wondered about the hint, too. I think, though, it's just that everybody calls Ollie "The Hood" or "The Vigilante" so maybe that's all there is to it. I'd prefer he be Red Arrow over Red Hood, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Firstly you made a typo, it's not a hoods are green, and you answered the reason why they didn't say, "Not all arrows are green", because that could hint to Merlin or Huntress. He obviously going to be red arrow, and the red hood name would have absolutely no significance to Roy Harper, since the Joker isn't in this universe

Thanks for the heads up, fixed now.
Good point about the arrows but the hood has nothing to do with Huntress and S2 Merlin doesn't wear a hood.
As for the red hood, Roy seems really really attached to his red hood, it would just be an upgrade to that, Arrow have shown they have no problems with changing origins

Nah. He's the Red Arrow. He got an arrow from the hood and painted it RED. He had it on him when he was arrested earlier this season. He's the Red Arrow. I know the show takes liberties but stealing a ROBIN? nah.

WOW!! The origin scene of Barry Allen's Flash in this show, justifies the entire existence of this show. It was incredible, comic book given life and motion. It was one of the coolest moments ever on TV, although I am a little biased, as I am a huge Barry Allen fan.

I really like Roy Harper all together. He only wants what's right and won't let anyone stop him! He is too nice on this show right now to be killed and come back seeking revenge. I am pretty sure that by the end of the season Roy will start training with Ollie.

I hope he becomes red arrow. I'm pretty sure he will become there's arrow though. I really wanna see Roy play a larger role and become a central character next too Oliver

Red Hood is a big part of Batman's mythos, why would he show up here as Roy? Especially with Roy having several other options such as Red Arrow, Arsenal, and Speedy! I've only watched this show recently, but I was curious is there any reference to Connor Hawke??

I don't think Tommy's coming back. We all know Grundy is going to come back. Roy is going to be throwing himself out there now, which, knowing how he works, is going to get him in trouble with the cops.

There's a lot of misdirection being pushed around. Sara is Black Canary, not Laurel, and we have the idea that she's likely going to die (though that'll suck and people obviously don't like Laurel).... Thea has the pet name "Speedy" and is Ollie's sister, but Roy Harper is the would-be sidekick.

We're all anticipating character deaths to see people take over the mantle, as it would be, but I don't think that's how it'll go. Roy is just going to do more stupid stuff.
