Who would have thought that re-launching the character of Green Arrow after Smallville would have been such a great success? With solid acting (Especially from The CW), sharp choreography, a plot with rich DC Comics lore that keeps you hooked as well as introducing The Flash and launching his own series, the show just seems to be getting better and better. Series writer/producer Mark Guggenheim took some time out of his Arrow-writing schedule to talk with the guys over at Collider about the hit show. Check it out below.

NOTE: Possible SPOILERS ahead.

On more people finding out about Ollie's other half:
I would say that that number is going to go up, before the end of the year. By the finale, more people will know than currently do.

On rather more people knowing is a good thing or a bad thing:
We talk in the writers’ room a lot about, are there too many characters that know and does it diminish the secret identity? Where we have come from is the philosophy that, when members of our cast of characters know, it draws them into Oliver’s world and it draws them into the show more. So, we tend to get more story out of people knowing than people not knowing. You could say that too many people know, but we always use The Dark Knight trilogy as our compass, and a lot of people knew that Bruce Wayne was Batman, particularly by the third movie, and it doesn’t diminish my enjoyment of watching those stories unfold. Obviously, there are different philosophies and different points of view. For us, as writers, we always go towards whatever gives us more story, and more interesting story. For now, at least, certain people knowing is more interesting than certain people not knowing.

On calling Roy "Speedy" in episode 17:
We did it because we want to keep inching Roy towards an Arsenal place. One of the runnings gags is that he keeps getting called Speedy and says, “I don’t like that nickname. Come up with another nickname for me.” When the time is right, eventually the nickname that will stick will be Arsenal, but the time has to be right.

On the status of Slade Wilson's mental state:
We try not to use the “I” word, as it were. He’s clearly not in his right mind, and Episode 18 will give you a lot of insights into what is going on in his head. Episode 18 is called “Deathstroke,” in large part because we really do get a much greater sense of Slade’s agenda and where he’s coming from, but also what’s going on in his head. Hopefully, Episode 18 will answer that, or at the very least, give you a big, new insight into it.

On using Batman characters now that Gotham is out there:
That’s part of the ongoing relationship and discussions that we have with DC. Things have not really changed with Gotham. It’s the same thing that it always is, which is that we have an idea, we go to DC, we talk about it, and we find out where the lines are and which characters are available or not available. I want to manage expectations with respect to Harley Quinn. She was always intended to be an Easter egg. I don’t want people to go in with incorrect expectations and walk away from Episode 16 disappointed. But there is an element to the Easter egg that was not spoiled by the promo, that I think people will find a lot of fun.

For more from Guggenheim, head over to Collider. For your Arrow watching pleasure, be sure to catch it every Wednesday on The CW at 8PM PST/EST.

So Roy won't be Red Arrow, we have even longer to wait then for Olly to become the "Green" Arrow.

Alright...if Roy is going to 'Arsenal' not 'Red Arrow' then does this means Ep.019 'Man Under the Hood' or 020 'Seeing RED' are not referring towards Him.

I wonder what code name diggle will go by. I would love for him to become arsenal.. But I'm leaning towards Green Lantern now (highly unrealistic now). Diggle really needs to have an identity if he's gonna be running around with Arrow.

@Nomis

If Diggle/Roy loses an arm i'll accept the Arsenal moniker.

@GizmoEl

CW can't use/afford Green Lantern.

Diggle won't be anybody if not someone new. They introduced him in the new 52 as just GA's early partner (much like the show)

He has Batman villains because his own villains are as big a joke as the Flash's rogue gallery. Evens worse they have to scale down some of these villains to "lite" versions so the Arrow (they're still too ashamed to call him Green) can win in a fight.

Glad its doing well but I can't sit through it the way I endure sitting through Agents of SHIELD's Scooby Doo gang. This is still a show designed for teenage girls just like Smallville was, lots of posters of young bare chested guys, any reason to show a bare chested guy getting his shirt off, lots of teenage sibling angst, relationship woes and parental drama. They just throw in the silly costumes and choreographed fight scenes because they know the average fanboy will never see past those two elements. Now they've got Black Canary and Huntress in there its gonna be Girl Power all the way baby, they'll have their own show in no time.

Only fanboys will not see past this kind of advertising..

lol, Anyone ordered a male stripper?

This show subliminally is gonna get a lot of fanboys in touch with their gay side, that's for sure.

Looks like it is competing for the Top Gun audience. (not that there is anything wrong with that)
Mothchild

@ Ceejay. Well I've never seen those promos before but I have to say none of that 'gay' tone is really reflected in the show.

Merlyn and Deathstroke are scaled down? Merlyn is a GA villain and he was the main villain of season 1. Deathstroke is traditionally a Titans' villain but now he fights most people in the DCU and is comic book accurate.

The choreographed fight scenes are a high standard for TV.

I appreciate the stories the creators deliver. how would you improve the stories?

Damn, so Roy is going to be Arsenal. This is interesting, as there is an episode called "Man under the hood" which I thought he would be get the Red Arrow name there. This may be another ollie becoming Green Arrow episode. One other possibility is Red Hood. I saw somewhere where they said Oliver wasn't the first vigilante, and he will learn that soon. Maybe the Red Hood shows up?

@Dev7 The original script which he wrote for GL was good it was Michael Goldenberg's rewrites and Martin Campbell's Direction that ruined it.

Last nite's episode was shit. Suicide squad sucked, Oliver was crying, Deadshot is friendly somewhat.. The only good thing was harley's appearance and Laurel looking hot as ever!

"voicing his opinion"? lol. Pasto is the biggest troll on this site...

Anyway, as I said the other day, if the DC/Arrow fanboys want a fight - they will get one. The gloves are officially off.

SecretWarrior
SecretWarrior - 3/20/2014, 8:23 AM
Thanks goodness Laurel is starting to look a little healthier. She could be very hot if she gained a bit of weight.

Last night's ep was fast paced espionage Bond kinda thing. No mom issues. No sis. No laurel. How could anyone complain? It's just an hour show once a week. Goes down painless.

And at least they are trying to incorporate Dc mythology as much as possible. They seem to respect characters like Deadshot, Slade, Canary. They are trying their best I think.
