Stephen Amell Comments On ARROW & AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D Comparisons

Arrow star Stephen Amell and executive producer Andrew Kriesberg speak out on the comparisons between Arrow and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. "I realize Agents of SHIELD is an easy comparison, but it's also kind of lazy."

Fans online have been hammering Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and praising Arrow. Some people have even begun to say that AoS needs to look to Arrow to see how to make a good comic book show. Now Stephen Amell has taken to Facebook and has commented on the comparisons.

"Yes... I do have a comment.

We are not in competition with other television shows. I realize Agents of SHIELD is an easy comparison, but it's also kind of lazy. We aren't trying to be the best comic book show, we're trying to be THE best hour of entertainment. Period.

There still seems to be a distinction that assumes television is somehow inferior to cinema... I think that's ridiculous. We embrace the rigors of an episodic schedule, use them to our advantage and churn out a kick ass product with a high degree of difficulty and virtually no margin for error. 966 minutes of programming every year.

I couldn't be prouder of what we do and that sense of accomplishment is based solely on the quality of our product, not the performance of anyone else's."

These comparisons have also reached their way to Arrow's executive producer Andrew Kreisberg who dismisses the idea that Arrow has any competition.

“We don’t really feel like we’re in competition with anybody else, we’re only trying to outdo ourselves as we move forward.”

Arrow returns from mid-season hiatus on January 15th.

"After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine."

This show is easily the BEST on TV at the moment and I agree with what Stephen said...

I have watched all episodes of SHIELD and it truly is garbage with those 2 scientists trying to be funny is just poor lazy humour...

I would have no problems with the Arrow appearing on the Big Screen with the rest of the gang in MOS 2...

OH YEAH...Felicity is Smoking HOT in that pic above as well...

These comparisons are BS , Arrow is a stand alone show where they are the most important and only part . AOS is just a small part of a giant universe . To compare the two is like comparing the most awesome ant hill with the arm of the space shuttle . Yea that ant hill is awesome but the arm is small part of a team that will do much greater things than an ant hill .

I'm going to give Agents of SHIELD one last chance with the mid-season premiere. If it fails to hook me, I'm dropping it.

ARROW is a cool show. Much better than AOS.
It's not the best show on tv but it keeps getting better.

I have so much respect for Amell, being in the position that he's init would be easy to belittle AoS, instead he gave a sensible, non-flame war starting comment.

I enjoy them both :)

Also bear in mind Arrow has had an entire season to get its crap together, AoS is only halfway through its first.

Both tv shows are different in tone and the way each show depends on the source material.
Just get rid of Agent of Shield and bring in The Defenders, Daredevil and Luke Cage.

Arrow is my favorite superhero show ever
I enjoy AoS but they have plenty of room to improve and I think it will

Amell is also 100% about the "lazy" comparisons which is why I'm not surprised it's one that keeps being made in these boards by some

Leave AOS as the ONLY ABC show and let Netflix be the full time runner of the others. I want Marvel to have some freedom and not need to be worrying about whether or not the general nielsen public which makes shows like So You Think You Can Dance? hits deciding the fate of characters anymore.

And Stephen Amell seems like a cool dude and he has really grabbed this role as his own. I'm disappointed they may be once again making two different DC universes instead of one but I suppose it works out in the long run as to what they can do.

I think Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a dead end show myself but if you need or want to call the show Agents of Shit to project how you feel about it then it's likely not as bad as you think.

I believe in Stephen Amell, Grant Gustin and Caity Lotz. I hope they are in the DCU. If there are two different DC universes instead of one, Snyder will have to find better actors for the role than the three mentioned above. It would be no easy. The most important thing is that Amell, Gustin and Lotz really love their characters.

I got bored of watching the same comment again and again just because some known names appeared in arrow or the 'surprises' that you can say they did because of their past faults.

Agents is not a superhero based show and everyone bush it and praise arrow for what? Bad character development that shows multi personality? bad acting? or half the cast with daddy issues?
Yea arrow became better over time but still is based on a soap opera with 50% of the characters with the maturity of 15year old kids.
both needs work to be 'a good show' but arrow is very far from the 'best show on tv'.

I have seen every episode of both Arrow and Agents of Shield. First let me say that between the 2 I prefer Arrow. Now that being said. What everybody seems do be forgetting is. Agents of Shield is about the agents who work for Shield NOT super heroes. It is a damn spy show, granted not a very good spy show, but that's what Shield is.

" If there are two different DC universes instead of one, Snyder will have to find better actors for the role than the three mentioned above. It would be no easy."

Really? You really believe there would be an exhaustive search to find more talented actors for these roles in a movie? Okay...

"The most important thing is that Amell, Gustin and Lotz really love their characters."

Lol... To a fan maybe. Love for their respective characters is a bonus, but, let's not go overboard on how it relates to quality work.

Arrow is easily the better show. AoS has great potential, it just hasn't been fully tapped yet.

There is no comparison!!!!!!! Arrow is an amazing show on a level we have never seen before. Agents of Shield is another story, it is a product that was forced down fans throats and of course some of the fanboys love it because it has Marvel's stamp on it.

I expected more from Marvel and I am excited for the Netflix shows starting in 2015.

Only thing AOS and Arrow have in common is that they are comic book properties on live action TV. Now if Arrow were based on a group of no name lames with no skills or powers bearing a comic book name then there would be similarities. Or maybe if Marvel made it a show about Hawkeye and other lesser known members of Secret Avengers, New Avengers, etc who kicked ass then maybe it would Arrow some competition, but that's not the case....and Arrow has Felicity Smoakin Hot! Lol

I couldn't disagree more about Arrow. For me, neither of these shows are worth the trouble or held my interest beyond the first few episodes. I tried to get into them both but one suffers from melodrama, the other one suffers from not having any interesting characters.

It's interesting seeing people complain about the soap opera nature of Arrow when comic books are soap operas. Overdramatized accounts of ridiculous things.

Arrow is phenomenal and I have yet to see someone watch all to where it is now, halfway in season 2, and complain about it.

So good. Music, fight choreography, main characters, comic references and respect have all become perfect as of season 2.
