We Should Keep Our Eyes Open For DC Superhero Cameos In ARROW Says Marc Guggenheim

Speaking to The Outhousers in a podcast, writer Marc Guggenheim talks in detail about his new CW show Arrow and what fans should expect---

On whether that's indeed Deathstroke's mask in the teaser trailer and if we can expect him to show up in the series?
Marc Guggenheim : That is most definitely the mask. I would encourage people to watch the show, particularly watch future episodes.
Will the show be similar in tone to Smallville?
MG: This is a brand new take. Smallville was an amazing show, it was an incredible vision of Superman and a lot of other DC superheroes including Green Arrow. This is a different take. This is taking Green Arrow from the ground up and making him the center of a show and we have to change the tone to fit the character. [The show] will be much more grounded, more realistic because he's a more realistic superhero than Superman, he doesn't fly, he doesn't have x-ray vision, he doesn't have super powers and our show reflects that.

It shares similarities with Smallville in so far that it's produced by Warner Bros., it's on the CW, David Nutter directed the pilot, Glen Winter was D.P. on Smallville, it shares certain talent. But apart from that it is a new and completely different kind of show.
How many episodes will the show have in its first season?
MG: We got picked up for 13 episodes. The standard [network] order is pilot +12 and that's what we're writing towards. But we have plans for what episode 22 would be, what seasons 2 and 3 would be about and with any luck, we get to tell all those stories.
Who made the decision to change the name of Green Arrow's hometown to Starling City?
MG: Basically, the decision was made by me and my co-writers, Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, and was in keeping with the notion that the show should be grounded in the real world, as much as possible. And we asked ourselves the question, "Would there be a city named Star City, in this day and age?" It sounds very science-fiction and we made the decision that it took us out of the tone that we were trying to set with the book. We thought about setting the show in Seattle because Seattle was where Mike Grell (Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters) had set his Green Arrow run but we steered away from that idea because we wanted a fictional city that we could blow up or get into its politics or create gangs, the artistic license a fictional city affords you. Originally it was going to be Starkton City but then to avoid comparisons with Iron Man, Andrew came up with Starling City and we all liked the name. If you check out the series, we tried to include references like Star City is what the tourist bureau calls the city.
Any other DC heroes appearing in the show?
MG: I would say, watch very carefully and watch more than the pilot.

Guggenheim also goes on to say that the show is greatly influenced by Andy Diggle and Jock's Green Arrow: Year One. You can hear the conversation in full by clicking the source link at the bottom of the page.

I have a good feeling about this show. Story for the pilot sounds generic, but otherwise I'm really liking what I'm hearing. Particularly interested in seeing how other DC heroes will tie into the series.

I think the city name rationale is pretty weak, they could have easily called it "Star City", similar to "The City of Industry" here is SoCal. Calling it "Star" would be weird, but if everyone uses the whole name it would be just fine.

I like that Guggenheim seems to be very forthcoming about the show without giving to much away. Arrow may be a great surprise come the fall. Look forward to checking this show out.

It would have been better to name it Star Point City or Starwatch City and give reference to a location in the town where you go a great view of the stars. And just call it Star City for short.

Marc Guggenheim should have no view at all. he also wrote Green Lantern and destroy that character.

they should of left it as Star City.

As a green arrow fan I'm really looking forward to this show. I understand that not everything translates from comics to live action well, especially considering they are trying to keep the tone grounded, therefore I can live with the small changes if it means getting a green arrow show.

I have a lot of confidence in this show. Besides Blade the Series, this is the only live action comic book series that will actually have a comic book writer as creator, writer and showrunner. Guggenheim has worked for DC Comics for 7 years and probably has extensive knowledge of the universe and it's characters. That's something Smallville never had. I'm really looking forward to what he and Kreisberg, also a comic book writer, will do with this series.

I think the show looks promising and I am certainly not going to discount it simply because they renamed the city slightly.

well this show seemed pretty interesting but then i heard that they changed the name of the city. that's just worse then putting nipples on batman. how am i supposed to enjoy this show knowing they slightly changed the name of his home city?

"What i want to know is if this is the green arrow we will see in the movie if a justice league gets made?"

No, this is the Arrow we will see if a League movie gets made. Seriously though, no it can't be, as they have said that Arrow takes place in a world without super powers (...yawn).

I'd like to see DC incorporate this into their own DC Cinematic Universe along with Man of Steel. Sure it's not a film, but if Marvel can make a Hulk TV series in-universe with their own Cinematic Universe, why not DC?

Okay, what is the percentage of mainstream, Joe Q. Public that will watch the show who even know the name of the city in the first place? It's a TV series and it's Green Arrow. It's not like Superman and Batman where most people are familiar with the characters' cities.

I defended smallville for years watch every episode still one of my fyavorite shows but in the end the show took a 20 inch gold rod and royalty F us I think the producers of this show know that. thats why they are staying as far away from smallville as possible WTH a superman barely in the suit Lois still know Clark is superman chloe green arrows baby momma darkside like galactus only thing they did right in the end was make Lex lose his memory of clarks idenity

Smallville haters are such funny, small minded people. Nothing is perfect. It had it's moments, both good and bad. But to say it was "shit" or "great" is so far left or right that you're opinion is shit.

I am looking forward to the show and all, but that is the dumbest reason to change the city name. Then they still change it to a fictional city
