Empire Magazine this month features an article on 'Green Lantern' and the Empire website offers us a small glimpse of their on-set interview with Ryan Reynolds and director Martin Campbell in which they defend the different direction the movie has decided to go with Hal's suit.

“It has to be virtual rather than spandex,” says Reynolds, wearing his grey sensor suit. “This is a suit from an alien planet.”

“It’s not The Dark Knight – I don’t put the suit on and my voice drops several octaves,” adds Reynolds, unfazed by the absence of green tights. “The suit is powered specifically on his will, his emotion, his creativity and his imagination. I love that.”

“Everything Hal creates are images from his childhood,” he goes on. “Or things fuelled specifically from his own mind.”

I'm still on the fence about the costume, I hate it but I love it. I don't think there's anything wrong with changing the costume, Nolan did it with Batman and that turned out great, I just don't know if this way is the right way to change it.

@Comedian03 agree! the costume isn't bad... but it isn't great either... i would have preferred something that looked more like armor... but that's just me... i do hope they use a slightly darker green when it's finished...

watched Reynolds in the amityville horror reamake last night, was pretty impressed by him surprisingly and the movie do to me hating 90% of horror movies (even though I am a horror fan). Good to see he has a good grasp on why the GGI suit idea fits GL and GL alone

It's about time we hear from him or anyone connected to this movie. WB is letting Batman and Superman movies overshadow this one

The suit is exactly the way it should be: perfect. It's not based on anything from earth. I absolutely love how it looks. I do not see any reasons why an intergalactic spacecop with a ring of unmeasurable technology and power would only wear a spandex suit with white gloves as his only protection against the vastness and vacuum of space. Reynolds grasps the exact meaning of the suit. It's form following function, more precisely form following will/imagination and functionality.
I love the original but I would transfer badly to film.

I don't care how they defend the suit's ugliness. It's still terrible. Sad that Green Lantern isn't getting the props that Captain America and Thor are getting. But, the people Marvel hired are paying a great deal of respect to the source material while Campbell and Reynolds are using the 'Alien' concept as a license to defend the awful changes they've made. And in that case, I'm glad Campbell/Reynolds like the changes. They can go see the movie with the other 110 people who are looking forward to seeing this crapfest that will be on a par with Billy Zane's The Phantom, which was also about a guy with a cooky costume/power ring.

ANNNNNNNND...

They can make excuses for the costume, mask and lantern all they want. It STILL looks like something out of that Roast Of The Superfriends silliness from the 70's.

Now that we have seen three straight days of Green Lantern related stuff can we finally get over the "Its going to suck because they aren't marketing it."? I have a lot of confidence in this movie and I think Reynolds is going to be a great Hal Jordan.

This is a really good feature guys, if you have access to a copy of Empire pick it up.

Just thought I'd share something I noticed about the main pic in the thumbnail.

Now, I see this pic everyday (it's my desktop background) but in this issue of Empire it looks a lot more detailed. Now, I don't know if that's just because I'm seeing it more clearly, but the mask and suit has a kind of texture that doesn't come off in most images - in my opinion this is the best I've ever seen it look.

Elsewhere Campbell's interview might reassure some: "You must approach it as if it were Shakespeare."

While he also explains how he tried to make it as physical as possible and only used CGI when he absolutely had to. He calls shooting in front of a blue screen "a pain in the arse".

Empire was also blown away by the environment designs: "Oa: a trippy Middle-earth of cathedral-spired cities and H.R Giger rock formations."

They touch on the negativity towards the suit/Comic Con footage, but the stuff about Parallax, Sinestro and Hammond all sounds really positive.

ive grown to really enjoy this costume. i do have minor gripes though like the mask needs tweaking and the absence if white gloves. the goods things are that hes still technically in "tights" (the suit is fitted to his body) and has the green/black color scheme in the correct places.
@andrew- if this were marvel he would most likely be wearing armor....

Buried?

That's EXACTLY what's going to happen after Green Lantern is released: It's going to be 'Buried' beneath all the other better performing movies that respected the source material.

The irony is too much.

Except for the white gloves, the suit looks almost exactly like it does in the comics. And I'm not a fan of the white gloves.

I'm really excited to see this film.

Lots of new faces! I havent commented in awhile but why is everyone hating on GL??? Especially the promo images they look better than the THOR promo images yet when I see those comments I see OMG NERDGASM and so on and so forth. Can we just wait till the movie comes out

I do admit the trailer was kind of lame ina Drive Angry nicolas cage way BUT I can see the huge potential and I believe in the director and Ryan Reynolds dont believe he can play a serious character with a tone down on the wit watch him in NINES.

Haters vs Supporters is so futile at this point.

In three weeks after trailer 2 people can paint a clear picture of this film - as opposed to judging special FX that had only been worked on for two months.

@Blackwidow: to be honest I'd rather they just take as long as it takes to make sure the next footage/images are water tight before releasing them - everything that's been released for this seems to have been rushed so far, so I'm quite glad they're taking their time now.

But like I said, one way or another, when Sucker Punch comes out we'll all know which way this is headed.
