EDITORIAL: 5 Possible Future Members Of The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY In The MCU

With Marvel's budding super space team set to make further appearances and impacts in the MCU, who else should we expect to see tagging along for the ride? And just how many clues have there been as to who they may be?

Last year, Marvel Studios surprised almost everyone when they unleashed a film that featured a whacky lineup of space heroes upon the world. Guardians of the Galaxy was a film that featured a wide array of weird characters, from Groot the talking tree, to Howard the Duck. With such a broad spectrum of oddball personalities to choose from, who else could end up joining the Guardians in the future? Well, there are plenty of options and for some f those, the groundwork has already been laid. On top of that, we can always speculate to our heart's content as to who might end up on the team in the future. So, just who are these potential new Guardians and what are they all about?

First up we have to take note of those who most definitely will not be joining the team, due to rights issues or other catastrophes brought about by Marvel's near bankruptcy. So far, there's only one casualty on this list and that is the character of Bug. A fun-loving, spear-wielding, joke-cracking insectoid being who just so happens to belong to a toy company. Much to our dismay, of course. We learned the hard way that we'd never see Bug join the Guardians. He was supposed to be a founding member of the team in last year's movie, only for the issues with the film rights to bring Bug's chances at superstardom to a rather untiemly demise. Still, I think that throwing a giant, bipedal, talking insect into the mix may have truly pushed people not to bother seeing the movie... What? Oh right yeah, Ant-Man.

Well, the bugs are normal size, it's Ant-Man that shrinks and makes the bugs look big! So screw you, overly judgemental fanboys! Moving swiftly on, we're here to talk about the Guardians of the Galaxy after all. The first character we'll take a look at is something of an essential character when it comes to the upcoming events of the MCU. He's bold, brash, kind-hearted and golden-skinned. He's got a green thing in the middle of his forehead. His costume got better over time. It's Adam Warlock.

Adam's future in the MCU may hang in the balance at present. He's got an Infinity Stone in his forehead most of the time, but now Vision's ticking that box too. Adam strives to maintain all life in the universe and ensure its survival. Vision ticks that box too. After watching Age of Ultron, I couldn't help but worry. Will Warlock ever appear in the MCU? Will we ever see one of the greatest characters ever to leap from the mind of man brought to the silver screen? Was his cocoon just an Easter egg? Even though we've seen it twice?! Who knows, for now we can only hope that this amazing character gets his dues. After all, James Gunn has set the story and cast for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and we're still in the dark about everything. For all we know, Adam's already a sure thing, but we'll have to wait and see. Next up...

The Vietnamese heroine, Mantis. I've just introduced the first problem with Mantis and
that's the fact that her origins lie here on Earth. However, Marvel have shown their quite willing to deviate both massively and minutely from the source material, tweeking little things to make different characters more suited to the environment in which they're introduced to us. Mantis is a key member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Her ability to see the future was actually the driving force behind the team's early 2008 story. On top of that though, her and Bug were quite friendly with one another, given their insectoid appearances and whatnot, so that could be a factor in favour of her not appearing in the sequel to Guardians. Nevertheless, nothing makes a movie more interesting than a character who can see the future. Look at Harry Potter. Nobody gave a toss about what was happening until the third movie came around and that crazy woman scared the life out of everyone in the cinema with that jump scare prophecy-spewing moment. Again, we're going to move on and this time I'm going in yet another new direction.

Major Victory, AKA Vance Astro, the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy of the future. Folks, the countdown to Infinity War has begun. There's very little time to get all the Infinity Stones established and ready to be acquired by Thanos the Mad Titan. So, how better to introduce the Time Stone than by turning Guardians of the Galaxy 2 into a time travel movie. Heck, bring 'em all in, the whole team of the year 3000. Funnily enough, the apparent production title for the sequel is Guardians 3000, although I doubt that's' true. Marvel are never that obvious with their production titles. Still, time travel could easily introduce us to a slew of new Guardians, but I'd love to see Major Victory more-so than Martinex, Charlie-27, Nikki or Starhawk. Just because of the Captain America shield. What a great pull factor that'd be for an audience, eh? Moving onward once again, humble reader.

Moondragon is a character who, once again, could do with a bit of origin tampering. mainly due to the fact that she's Drax's daughter in the comics, but unless Drax has had memory implants, that's not the case in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She's a key member of the team, much like Mantis, and she also has some ties to Thanos. Which, given the nature of the MCU thus far, can only be a benefit to the over-arcing story of the thing. I'll throw in that it'd be great to see the Vell family in the MCU. Phyla's relationship with Moondragon has always been something of a highlight of Guardians comics and I'd hate to think that Mar-Vell will never make a cinematic appearance. Genis can go [frick] himself though. Nobody likes Genis. So, onward we go to the final member that I want to see join the team in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. It could only be...

Blackjack O'Hare! Okay, yeah, I'm kidding, Blackjack O'Hare would never in a million years show up in a Marvel movie. In any capacity. In actuality, I'm gonna go ahead and say this guy. He's Marvel's answer to... well nobody, he's pretty much just a side character nobody cares about, but I love him.

Quasar's a character that's close to my heart, purely because he and Nova are Marvel cosmic's answer to Joey and Chandler. I think that's my first Friends reference on this site. Anyway, Quasar'd be amazing to see on the big srcreen, especially alongside the Guardians. His dad was actually referenced on an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. last season, which makes me think that maybe he might show up on AoS of all places. Wherever he may rear his head, I just want to see Quasar in the MCU, kicking ass and taking names.

What do you guys think though? Who would you like to see take up arms with the Guardians of the Galaxy in their next movie? Be sure to let me know in the comments section below and also don't forget to check out my Marvel Cinematic Universe Theory, in case you haven't already. And yes, I will be shamelessly plugging that at the end of every article I write about MCU related matters from now on.

I think James Gunn said that there will be 2 new characters joining the team. If that's the case then I hope we see Adam Warlock and Phyla-Vell.

Starhawk might be in the movie too as Star Lords father.

Nice read, I must admit to lacking a lot of knowledge about the GoTG series. So thanks for sharing now I know quite a bit more. Thumbed !

I'm with Speedy above, I don't know much about GoTG (other than the awesome movie) but this is interesting.

I can't imagine they'd show Adam Warlock twice if they didn't plan on using him. But then again you're right, he sounds an awful lot like the Vision. I guess they could change somethings around though.

We don't need freaking adam warlock with vision being the one with a gem in his head we don't need two people with gems in their forehead

Major Victory is a Mutant. Do they share rights with him? And I believe they will take Warlock a step further in the MCU. Adam Warlock IS the Soul Stone. They are one and the same.

@TheEpicJuicebox Heroes with gems on their forehead will be the new fad!

You know, months ago I would have said I wanted characters like Moondragon, Caesar, and Mantis in Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, but thinking about it more, I don't think it's necessary to reinvent the team in a big way. All the movie needs are more characters for them to team up with, and keep the actual Guardians Of The Galaxy team the same as the last movie. The only character that I would be disappointed if they leave out is Adam Warlock.

James Gunn confirmed that Adam Warlock is doable in the MCU. Deep breaths.

Thinking about what I said....I love the idea of Warlock actually being a physical manifestation of the Soul Stone. We know Vision will lose the Mind Stone to Thanos. But even if Thanos destroys Warlocks physical body, or absorbs him into the gauntlet, we could still have Warlock battling Thanos on another plane of existence within Thanos mind. He could be Thanos downfall. Manipulating him from within the Gauntlet once absorbed. A heroic sacrifice to save the galaxy.

Plus we have already seen the Aether in another form so why couldn't it be a person? It's supposed to have a conscious of its own anyways.

Vance Astro! Everyday all day, Vance frickin Astro. Also Mar-Vell and Noh-Varr. Set up Captain Marvel, and later set up a possible replacement on the Dark Avengers.

@gamecreatorjj.

Vance Astro = Major Victory

Vance Astrovik = Justice

They are the same character. Major Victory is him from the future. He's a Mutant so they can't use him unless there's a shared deal like with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Hell even a lot of the other New Warriors would be a problem too.

Firestar is a Mutant too.
And Namorita should be under Universal cause of Namor.

I wish there was a list of characters so we knew 100% what characters are where and who can be used by the MCU.

Nice article man

I really want Warlock too, and thinking about it, it could work really well in the MCU, even if he has the soul stone, it would be awesome to see Vision and Warlock together

I'm wondering how far GOTG 2 will dive into Thanos and his quest for all the stones, and unless there are duplicates, Vision is definitely going to be in trouble

And, I want time-travel in the MCU. I want it. I think I prefer it to come after the Infinity Wars though, and hopefully when Fantastic 4 and Kang come home ;) I was actually wondering about other cool ways they could introduce time travel, other than Kang

Even an Annhialators movie might not be possible any time soon. Too many of them are with other studios.

Silver Surfer with Fox
Gladiator with Fox
Ikea with whoever has ROM

@WYLEEJAY

I'm honestly not sure it's 100% that Marvel can't use Kang, until Feige makes an official statement

I remember Sony said Marvel didn't have the rights to Kingpin either but Marvel was able to use him in Daredevil

But, yeah, totally, I really wish there was an official list of who owns who, but I think it might be more complicated than that
gamecreatorjj
gamecreatorjj - 5/31/2015, 2:53 PM
@WYLEEJAY I know what you mean man, Taskmaster by all accounts should be at Marvel. He is an ex Shield Agent. He is often associated with AIM, but apparently Fox owns him because of his connection to Deadpool or something.

Wait a second, Fox owns Kang. Disney owns Iron Man. Who owns Iron Lad? Could Fox hypothetically put out an Iron Lad movie to compete with Iron Man. Can Fox use the Skrulls? If so could they use Hulkling?
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 5/31/2015, 2:54 PM
I wonder if the rights depend on the movie too

Like, Universal owns the standalone Hulk rights, but Marvel can use Hulk in other movies, the rights thing seems really complicated with lots of room for negotiation
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 5/31/2015, 2:55 PM
Yeah, that Iron Lad thing is confusing as hell

Kang should be with Marvel. He's crucial to Avengers history

I am thinking that we'll see Starhawk in Guardians, perhaps even both the female and male form at different points in the movie. The other character may be Adam Warlock as he has been teased. Although just as the article puts it, the Vision may have filled that gap which necessitates Warlock and we don't quite know if he is still on the table.

I believe Starhawk is one of Gunn's favorite characters. Hoping to see "the one who knows". The concepts behind that character would help pull all the different Marvel franchises together for Infinity War, including Dr. Strange.

Interesting question: Anyone think Starhawk may be Starlord's dad?

This character rights thing sucks donkey dick. Too bad Marvel got into all that trouble in the 90s. And I don't want to hear any shit from the DC guys. DC almost went bankrupt years earlier. And was almost bought by Marvel!

I rrally hope that Adam Warlock will appear, and i'm thinking he will.

He doesn't have to have the gem in his forehead. He is an artifical being after all. They could easily say he was created to house the infinity gem. Maybe even make the gem his heart, which is why he's so powerful.

Also, Nova i'm sure you know this, but Warlock is often referred to as "Him". It would also fill in the missing "H" in Thanos's name, assuming of course that theory of all the gems containers spelling out Thanos happens to be true.

My opinion.....

Adam warlock is IN the soul gem. He lives in soul world, or land or something for a time which is connected to the stone. I believe STARFOX will be Peter's dad, that way he can have a connection to thanos, since they bros. Skrulls I believe are with marvel, which I read on this site since this is the only one I go to. So I would love to see them in it.

@GliderMan
The episode at S.H.I.E.L.D. academy. FitzSimmons are up on the podium talking to the trainees and they mention having to sit through Professor Vaughn's lectures.

The Nova / Quasar relationship depends on what you're looking to read. They're not often together, but they're friends because they're both in the same predicament, being from Earth, having superpowers, and fighting aliens. The best most recent ones would be from Nova #18 up until around #20 or so. Then a few of the issues from #37 onward. Yu can get all of the new Nova stuff in trade paperback, so you don't have to go looking for individual issues.

Major victory is not a mutant. He is an astronaut from the fifties who went up in space and got stranded after going through a worm hole then get takin in by some aliens that put a simbiote suit on him that kept him from aging due to the worm hole taking him to the future so he tracked down his Herod (captains) shield and became major victory but he does because his suit gets ripped apart and then he ages into dust.

Kang is 100% at Fox. Gunn said specifically that he couldn't use Kang. He also said that they knew years ago who he could and couldn't use.

I see them maybe using Warlock, Quasar, Captain Marvel and Ironman in GOTG. I doubt they would add too many more characters. My make wish foundation dream would be to see Richard Rider take over as Nova Prime and help the Guardians.
