GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Director James Gunn Explains Why Spoilers Won't Ruin The Sequel For You

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's international release means that spoilers are all over the place before it reaches North America, but the sequel's director has explained why that doesn't matter...

For a variety of reasons, Disney and Marvel Studios frequently release their movies in a variety of internatonal territories before North America. Many fans based in that country claim that it's wrong "our" films debut elsewhere first, but when the vast majority are released domestically long before they reach the likes of the UK and China, a couple of Marvel movies a year is a small price to pay.

Of course, the downside to that is the fact spoilers quickly find their way into comments sections and reviews, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has now taken to Facebook to reveal why learning about a specific plot point or two beforehand may not really be the end of the world.

"There are studies that show spoilers don't really spoil anything. In a good story, our brains feel just as much pleasure whether or not we know the plot point ahead of time - and a new sort of pleasure emerges when we're piecing together the story we know is leading to some already-known element.

So, if you've accidentally heard about a surprise in Vol. 2, worry not - you will still be able to heartily enjoy the film. Not only because spoilers don't matter, but because we've created a movie where the story, humor, visuals, music, and emotion don't rely on surprises even if they did, and that you'll have a blast whether or not you know a spoiler or two before going in."

The full statement can be found by heading over to his page, but Gunn makes a very interesting point here. However, there's no getting around the fact that most fans would rather go into a movie like this one knowing absolutely nothing, so anyone who's been accidentally spoiled probably won't be comforted by these remarks. What do you guys think? As always, let us know your thoughts below.

I'm still glad I could go into the movie mostly unspoiled. Looking forward now to second viewing!

I had quite a large plot point spoiled for me and still thoroughly enjoyed the movie, so yeah, I guess he's right.

I just don't understand why Marvel can't coordinate a simultaneous worldwide release. Seriously, Fast & Furious can manage it, but Disney can't??

Shut the hell up gunn.

As a storyteller you figure he would think differently. There's the setup-and-payoff game that the story plays with our brain. When you set up an event, a viewer gets an idea of what will happen later. They may not even notice it, and when the payoff comes, you award the audience for paying attention. They have that "aha I knew it" feeling. Either that or you completely blindside them. That dude is Luke's father, wow, who woulda thunk. That sort of surprise is incredibly exciting. You don't need a [frick]ing study to tell you movies are better that way, it's common sense. When "Luke I am your father" happened for me, I didn't even give a shit, I already knew that. Also, Vader was less mysterious in the first movie, less threatening, because I knew he was Luke's papa. He must have some good in him if at one point he wanted a family, I saw him as a tragic figure, instead of the stoic menace he was meant to be.

Seriously, this Is stupid. I knew superman was going to die, you can bet your pants that made his death less impactful. I knew Tyler Durden was an imaginary person, the big reveal in that movie made me feel nothing. I saw all the hints, which was distracting because I kept thinking about how everything was imaginary instead of viewing the events as taking place in the real world, which is what the author intended. The ending was devoid of shock, you can't say it was better for me to never feel that. I make a point to never watch a movie twice unless it has great special effects, it's super [frick]ing boring when the plot doesn't surprise me. The thrill of not knowing is what drives me to watch in the first place. With fight club I was a kid, nowadays if I knew the ending beforehand, I wouldn't even watch it.

He's just saying this to make himself feel better, because he is wrong, and in the back of his head he knows it.

Well said James but completely contradicts a comment he left on one of his Instagram post saying he'd block anyone for posting spoilers in the comments!

Major plot points were spoiled for me, unwanted I may add, and in this case it really didn't ruin anything for me. The journey the characters take in this are more important than where they end up for the most part for this adventure. Really enjoyed Volume 2, think it was better than the first. Only real complaint is the humor doesn't always land, but it's truly a minor detail IMO

Waaaaay better than I had originally anticipated, especially after having the story spoiled for me. The visuals are just stunning, the soundtrack is even more memorable and complimentary to the story's narrative than the first one, and the villain is way more impactful than most in here would ever want to admit, just so they can move on with a stupid meme that was never even accurate to begin with, for the sake of forcing an undeserving balance between a nearly decade-old platinum train with fusion engines and a wooden cart dragged by a mule that was born five years ago and thinks of himself an artist!

HINT HINT, YOU GOD DAMN MORONS!

Not even gonna apologise for that.

so those who have seen it, how kid friendly is it?
DrReedRichards

@thewanderer -

Honestly, it depends on your definition of "adult". There are a couple of male anatomy jokes, and a slight mention (and perhaps underplay) at the themes of adultery and nymphomania (mostly as an extension of megalomania), but other than that, a 13 year old child should be just fine.

@thewanderer - your gonna wanna cover the kids eyes and ears for the Drax and Mantis sex scene...
