James Gunn Says Revealing Ego's Role In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2. Isn't A Spoiler

This weekend's panel for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came with the incredibly surprising news that Kurt Russell would be playing Ego The Living Planet, and that this famous cosmic character would be Star Lord's father. While the identity of Peter Quill's Dad was a mystery in the first film, it was never really implied by any of the Marvel team that they wouldn't be revealing his identity for the sequel's promotion. However, there were still groups of fans who were upset with Gunn for divulging what they thought would be a well-kept secret. Gunn, in his usual fashion, took to his Facebook page to respond.

“People have been particularly excited, confused, and supportive of keeping 'Marvel Cosmic' truly cosmic with the reveal of Peter Quill's father's identity....I get it. If we lived in a perfect world, I wouldn't tell you ANYTHING before you walked in to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.," said Gunn. "I wouldn't tell you Groot was now Baby Groot, I wouldn't tell you Mantis was in the movie, I wouldn't say that Ayesha and Taserface are our antagonists, that Yondu and Nebula have incredibly important roles in the film, nor would I tell you that Quill's father is Ego The Living Planet. However, the world is imperfect.”

Gunn explained that the reasons for the reveal were twofold; firstly, he said "we need to advertise our film", and it would be "impossible to show you very much of Vol. 2 [without the reveal] because Ego is very much a part of it all." The second reason was the wealth of websites and publications who are ready to spoil secrets at a moment's notice, and Gunn said he “would rather be in control of the announcement...than have it come out on SpoilersRUs.com."

Gunn continued on to say that Ego's role in the film is substantial and significant, and knowing he is Star Lord's father ahead of time won't change the impact he has on the story. “That said, knowing who Quill's father is will not diminish your enjoyment of the film in any way,” Gunn explained. “Ego [is] the emotional center of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 from the beginning to the end, and is not a twist. And believe me - there are many, many more surprises we still have in store for you from Vol. 2 - hopefully the biggest of which is how much you'll love the movie itself.”

What do you think of Gunn's reasoning? Sound off below!

Everything about this movie sounds dumb to me.

@DallasAvenger - First one sounded dumb too.

@DallasAvenger - A talking raccoon and tree sounded awesome to you but a talking planet sounds dumb? LOL. I am always interested to hear where the cutoff is for people in terms of plausibility.

@RamonSuarez - It's much easier to accept a talking raccoon and tree than it is to accept a talking planet that birthed a child.

@slyguyty - why
DallasAvenger

@RamonSuarez - It has nothing to do with that. The first movie sounded like they were making the Rocket and Groot that I loved into movie characters. This sounds like they are distorting the Ego that I love into something unrecognizable. He's the emotional center of the movie? Really? Ego? No thanks. Sounds dumb to me.

@DallasAvenger - 4 words.

Then. Don't. Watch. It.

It's not like Marvel is sweating balls regarding whether or not DallasAvenger wants to watch GotG 2.

@ALostCause - Because talking animals is something we've all seen before, it wasn't as groundbreaking as people wanted it to be. But if Gunn can pull this off with ego, that will be a big time game changer.

@Hulk94 - You're an idiot. By that logic no one should ever say a negative thing about a movie ever. And that could be extrapolated across many platforms.

Don't complain about your corrupt congressmen, it's not like he cares about your one single measly vote.

Don't complain that your hamburger tastes like garbage it's not like McDonald's cares about your small amount of random purchases.

Maybe, just maybe, I have the right to give my opinion, and maybe that's the minority opinion and goes by unnoticed, maybe I give my opinion and become part of large coalition and effect real change, doesn't matter which way, the likely outcome doesn't change your right to voice an opinion or the need to not remain silent and complacent.

It's not like I'm bashing all Marvel movies all the time because of the logo. I love the movies. I just don't like some of things I'm hearing about his one. I don't need to be some lap dog licking up whatever crap they feed me. I have months and months to decide how I want to choose to spend my money. And I sure don't have to silence my opinion along the way because it offends some guy to hear any small amount of negative things about an upcoming Marvel movie.

@slyguyty - Christianity built an entire religion on the premise that a infinite, omnipresent entity's essence could enter a virgin woman and produce a man. But a planet who impregnates a woman is impossible to accept?
