GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3: James Gunn Talks Movie's Ending And The Team’s Future Without Him - SPOILERS

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has addressed the movie's ending, revealing whether he considered killing any of the key characters and what the future may hold in store for the team.

Heading into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we expected at least a couple of the heroes to die. There had been plenty of hints that might be the case, with the threequel's trailers strongly hinting that both Rocket and Drax were at risk.

Ultimately, everyone survived and we, thankfully, got a happy ending.

Talking to The New York Times, filmmaker James Gunn revealed whether he was ever tempted to bid a more definitive farewell to any of the Guardians. "Gamora was going to die originally in 'Vol. 2' [2017]," he recalls, "and then we talked about it happening in 'Infinity War' and that worked better for the story."

"But the rest of them, I always knew where they were going. I knew that the whole trilogy is about Rocket, who we think of as a supporting character, becoming the captain of the Guardians.

"The arc with Peter Quill, in some ways, you can look at as that of many people who have experienced childhood trauma. He was by his mother’s bedside when she died, and he ran away and went into outer space - which, for other people, could be shutting off from the world - and stayed there for a long time until he came to the realization as an adult that he needed to go back to Earth. That, for me, was always his journey."

"Nebula becomes a leader, but a different sort of leader from where she was. Mantis goes off on her own and takes care of herself because she lived by others’ rules her entire life," Gunn continues. "Drax realizes that he’s a father and that’s what he’s really good at - he’s not a destroyer. All those things, some more clearly than others, were in my mind from the first movie."

In Vol. 3's mid-credits scene, a new team of heroes led by Rocket Raccoon assembles. A second stinger, meanwhile, teases the eventual return of the Legendary Star-Lord.

Asked if he ended the stories of any of these characters knowing that the actors playing them will or won't eventually return, Gunn explained: "Yeah, a little bit. Both Zoe and Dave have been very clear they’re not going to continue - likewise, me, actually."

"Chris is open to doing more stuff, although I think he has to be convinced. It does change some things: Like, I wouldn’t have had Dave in the post-credits scene. But I’m not sure if much would have changed beyond that."

While Gunn's time working on the franchise is over, we're sure many of these actors will be part of the MCU moving forward and even those who have said they're done...well, if enough money is on the table, we have to believe they'll at least consider reprising their respective roles.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters.

I think Infinity War and Endgame hurt Guardians as a trilogy, because if you try to watch these movie on its own (like James stated time and time again that was his intention) three mayor things happened outside of it; Quill went back to Earth, and of course, Gamora getting killed, and then the 2014 variant coming to the present.
At the end, the whole thing worked because he ignored Quill being on Earth before the ending of this movie (just like he ignored Thor being a Guardian), and surprinsingly, the thing with Gamora worked great.
I do, however, think he is lying about his plans about killing Gamora in Guardians 2, he said recently he had to rewrite Guardians 3 after he learned what they were doing in Infinity War, and Quill's rant in the elevator in Guardians 3 feels like he is speaking for Gunn, and how salty he is about that mayor plot point happened outside his trilogy.
About the Guardians coming back...they shouldnt, these actors are already rich and famous, just...move on, and is not like the franchise will remain dead, other actors can do the voices for Groot and Rocket, and then introduce new characters...Quill going back to space would completley ruin this movie's ending.

@TheHumanSpider2 -
That's the problem with a shared universe. Same thing with Mandalorian. If you don't watch Boba Fett there are huge plot holes.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I watched all three back to back (even skipped the Holiday special) and the Gamora thing was less jarring. I think he handled it very well, playing up the fact that she didn't remember him more than the fact that she was a time-variant and the original died. The only time that necessary exposition came was in the elevator scene and it kinda worked just because of how crazy it sounded.

People always give Gunn shit for reducing things to a joke, but reducing this continuity convolution to a joke worked really well for the integrity of these films as a self-contained trilogy.

I love how it works as Gunn's personal commentary on his frustrations too.

@Goldboink - Yeah, while he certaintly try to make his trilogy "its own thing", the moment the Guardians showed up in an Avengers movie, it was obvious that was imposible.

@ObserverIO - Yes, he did, but lets asume the movie pretends Gamora doesnt remember Quill (which the movie still clarifies is not the case, and that is just Quill being in denial), when did she lost her memory? why is she so mean?
30 years from now, when people want to experience these movie, they just cant skip Infinity War and Endgame.

And btw, you should watch the Holiday Special, is cute.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Oh I did, I watched it during the holidays. Probably gonna watch it again this Christmas too.

I'm hoping that Gunn's experience with the MCU will help him be more understanding of other writers and directors working in his universe.
He did say that he wanted everything to feel like the vision of the directors doing them (or something to that effect) in the Gods and Monsters video.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Quill going back to Earth is merely temporary. Gunn made that point exceptionally clear with the line: I’m going to need to take SOME time’

@SauronthePower - Still, he went there, and in the movie, he speaks like he is going for the first time.
Always bothered me how ni Endgame they didnt have him at least saying "come on, guys, I dont wanna be here a second more", making it clear he still hated the idea of being on Earth.

@ObserverIO - The biggest complain about the genre for the past 5 years is that all comic book movies look and feel the same, so I dont think Gunn is doing that just because he is altruistic, but because that is what consumers are demanding.
He is also seems to be "adapting" to the new demands, the other day he confirmed Superman Legacy will have a composer...I think this is his first comic book movie with an actual score, and not just licenced music, which btw, is one of the things ALL comics book movies are doing for the past few years, and it got old already.

money is on the table?

Disney is so cheap.
since EndGame anything new. Not sequels. But knew. Has had,

no name actors, no name writers and no name directors.
why? because they are dirt cheap.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE -

Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, Endgame. The Russo brothers were the heart and brains of the MCU for a decade.

The MCU has not come close to replacing them, and man it shows.

They have made some good movies, but also some clunkers the last couple of years, but nothing is cohesively pulling all this Kang/mulltiverse/variants stuff together in any significant way.

If they roll into The FF & X-Men like this, things could go very badly.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - "no name actors"
Shang-Chi had Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh. Eternals had Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - Got it. So, to summarize, since Endgame, anything new in the MCU (ie, not sequels)–which is a grand total of three movies between 2019 and 2024, mind you–has suffered from starring has-beens like Academy Award Winners Angelina Jolie, Mahershala Ali, and Michelle Yeoh, who should be happy that they're getting called for any roles at all, really?

These characters all really did have perfect arcs and endings. Especially Quill’s, that was always my wish to see him REALLY go back to Earth and confront his trauma. I teared up when he found his grandfather.

At first i was surprised / almost disappointed that none of them died, but then when you think about it, that was never the natural progression for any of these characters. They’re all such tortured souls with tons of trauma that have suffered so much loss, killing any of them almost would have been redundant to their stories.

A case could be made that it would be the ultimate full circle moment for one of them to sacrifice themselves (like tony) for their “new family”, after all of them acted with self-serving interests most of their lives, but they’ve all redeemed themselves in other ways since GOTG vol. 1.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 5/14/2023, 3:22 PM
@DanFlashesShirt - That was another way Marvel screwed Gunn over. A big part of Star Lord's character was his resistance to go back to Earth and yet he went there in Endgame with no sense of ceremony or character development at all. Just shows up like it's no big deal to him.
SATW42
SATW42 - 5/14/2023, 4:08 PM
@ObserverIO - he didn’t really go back to earth in endgame. Dr strange warped him there and then he seemingly immediately went back to space. He didn’t try and go home, he didn’t do anything to try and connect to it, he fought in a battle and bounced.

I really never thought anything of quill being in the battle in endgame because it wasn’t really his home at that point. He was warped into a blown up hell scape in upstate New York, then we saw him in new Asgard leaving. We don’t even see him on the ground, we see him inside the ship lol.

I think there’s a big difference between just being back on earth and emotionally being ready to “go
Home”

@SATW42 - we do see Quill at Tony’s funeral so you can assume he at least stayed a night or two, but I do mostly agree that I’m sure he tried to disconnect from his surroundings as much as possible and was probably adjusting to coming back to life/registering Gamora’s death over anything else.
DanFlashesShirt
DanFlashesShirt - 5/15/2023, 4:08 PM
@ObserverIO - yea Endgame didn’t really count, IMO. He got un-dusted, a portal opened and he was thrust into a battle to save the universe. He paid his respects to Tony’s sacrifice, made a stop in New Asgard for Thor, then dipped out back to space. I doubt he really had much time to really think about or process anything. His arc in Vol. 3 is what allowed him to finally confront his childhood Earth trauma.

I don’t think they really screwed Gunn over, I’m sure he understood that it would be silly to have THAT scene with every hero from the franchise make a stand without the Guardians.
