GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Director James Gunn Says Thanos's Cameo Was "An Extra Complication"

During the live commentary for Guardians of the Galaxy, filmmaker James Gunn revealed what Marvel Studios asked him to include and why Thanos's role ended up being "an extra complication" for him!

As we reported earlier today, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn held a live commentary on Twitter for his 2014 movie. There were a number of big reveals from the filmmaker, including the role Josh Brolin's Thanos ended up playing during the classic team-up adventure. 

As you might expect, Marvel Studios requested that the Mad Titan make an appearance to set the stage for his Avengers: Age of Ultron cameo, and also asked for an origin story for the Infinity Stones.

Guardians of the Galaxy marked Thanos's first proper appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after The Avengers' mid-credits scene, while the exposition about the Infinity Stones proved to be useful to Marvel Studios (and will most likely factor into next year's Eternals movie). However, Gunn admitted that including Thanos proved to be somewhat problematic, especially when it came to tying the iconic villain into the story arc of Ronan the Accuser.

 

It all worked out in the end, though, and the filmmaker delivered an undeniably awesome adventure.

I actually liked the Thanos cameo and Ronan telling him he was coming for him, in which Thanos smiled like the maniac tyrant he is

@regularmovieguy - I liked him and Lee's hammy performance. Malekith, Whiplash, and bullshit "Mandarin" all rank much lower on my personal list among others.

@regularmovieguy - I had the stunning realisation a few weeks ago that Ronan was just a poor fit for a Guardians movie villain and should have been the main villain for Captain Marvel.

@CaptainJCipher - The way I would have done it would have been to actually frame the story around him being the villain, and a highly respected and feared leader of the Kree that is the main driving force in the war against the Skrulls, and make him be the only one that can actually visit the Supreme Intelligence.

Because Ronan is all about war, propaganda, racial superiority and extremism, and none of those things are relevant in Guardians but is all Captain Marvel is actually about.

I like how outspoken, but polite this guy is. He isn't like Josh Trank or anything, lol.

Anyway, I can only imagine how hard it could be to write a script for a Marvel movie, then Fiege knocks on your door and says,

"Say... About that script. We're gonna need you to tease Doctor Doom in there. Oh, and MODOK too. Otherwise, keep up the good work."

@KWilly - Yeah but Gunn has never had anything bad to say about Feige or the studio, just the "old guard" (Ike and Committee).

@KWilly - Eh, I feel like those were two widely different situations. There are a few MCU films that definitely give the vibe of being hamstrung by the studio itself, but certain directors on the others, like Gunn, give the impression that they had more creative control on the project. If anything, I'd compare Tranks experience on set to Alan Taylor, not that I'm giving a first hand account though. Idk, the experience of helming these big budget films seem to vary a lot and can be frustrating in general.
