Awesome New HELLBOY Image Released As David Harbour Says He "Didn't Want To Imitate Ron Perlman"

Fans don't seem to know quite what to make of the upcoming Hellboy reboot but this cool new image might help ease some worried minds, especially as David Harbour says he'll put his own stamp on the hero...

The first Hellboy trailer was met with something of a tepid response, seemingly because the decision to take the franchise down a similar route to Deadpool isn't what a lot of fans were hoping for.

With any luck, a new trailer is around the corner as it would be great to see more footage from the movie in order to get a better idea of what to expect. In the meantime, though, another image has been released and it's fair to say that David Harbour looks like he's stepped out of the comics!

One thing the actor isn't looking to do, however, is imitate Ron Perlman.

"[Perlman] does something quite extraordinary in those films that is very specific to him, and I did not want to imitate that in any way," he explains. "In our movie Hellboy’s younger. He’s rougher. He’s much more of a teenager. He’s really struggling with the idea of whether or not he’s a good person."

Does that sound like the right direction to take Hellboy
in to you? As always, share your thoughts in the comments section and stay tuned for more on this as we have it.

First and I think it seems like he tried to imitate Pearlman slightly regardless if he meant to or not

Especially the “I’m the good guy!” Part in the trailer. Very Pearlman espue

This was one of the very few reboots I was actually optimistic for...then I saw the trailer. 😑

Any word on if it's still supposedly rated R, or has that changed?

@Feralwookiee - It is rated R. A new image was released a few days ago that had a dude impaled by a spear. Here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HellBoy/comments/asbr43/alrighty_a_new_still_that_looks_absolutely_deadly/ Also Mike Mignola, the comic writer, promised that the trailer this week would be WAY better.

@BanthaFodder - Thanks for the info! 😊

I'm cautiously optimistic.

Is this a straight to Netflix or DVD kind of film?

not overly thrilled about this. I want it to be good. I love David Harbour, and I've read through a HUGE chunk of the mignolaverse, so I was really hoping for some classic BPRD and hellboy action. Hopefully a second trailer does a bit better at capturing that feel.

Tbh it seems from the trailer he’s more of an idiot than anything else “It smashes things real good.” Im really hoping that trailer isn’t an indicator of the final films tone and quality bc I really want to like this

David Harbour's Hellboy face doesn't look like Hellboy with the square jaw like Ron Perlman's face did.

Hellboy's look didn't necessarily have to consist of a lot of prosthetics on the face. Mignola's art allows for a fairly normal (but red) face plus the horns. All his characters have extreme angular features even the human ones. They could have gone light on the add-ons and basically gone a different route with his look.

@FleischerSupes - In fairness this image is a drawing of the Perlman Hellboy. Typically, his Hellboy drawings are much more unnatural. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/262827328225276885/

I think the only weird thing about the new Hellboy design is just how little his human hand is compare to the massive Right Hand of Doom, the size of them draws a lot of attention and it can be a little distracting.

@NinnesMBC -
Not just the hand, but the whole body and face being full of prosthetic makes his whole look super uneven and awkward.

For look and voice I can’t imagine anyone else doing better than Ronny boy. The trailers feel .... off .... tone wise for me. But I’ll definitely go see it. Can’t make a final judgement until you see the film otherwise you’re not really playing fair.

Case in point: Cold Pursuit.

What a weird film.

Very big shoes to fill (and he seems like a really, really nice chap) no ill feeling towards Harbour at all.
Give me a good story and good acting, hell I'm as forgiving as others are!
But please don't **** it up completely LOL!

Mos Def shoulda paid Perlman! The whole cast should have been brought back.
That being said - Have to wait and see, Harbour has been pretty good in everything I've seen him in. Just have to try not to "expect" anything - That's the HARD part!

I enjoy Ron Pearlman as much as the next guy, but David Harbour is a way better actor. The only problem is that Pearlman seemed to literally be born to play the part of Hellboy. It is like Karloff and Frankenstein's monster. You have trouble separating the 2. I am still excited and optimistic about the movie because it is Hellboy and Harbour is a very good actor. Can he replace Pearlman, no, but can it still be an enjoyable movie, yes.

How is he younger? Is his origin now tied to Vietnam or Korea instead of WW2?
