Last month's horror film
Scream 4, the latest installment in the well received franchise, has been very unsuccessful at the box office (despite getting better reviews than the last film), not even getting $100 million worldwide. It'd be easy to think that the
Scream franchise is over. Not so, says executive producer Harvey Weinstein. In a recent interview with
MTV, he confirms plans are still on for a new trilogy in the horror franchise.
On director Wes Craven likely returning to direct a sequel...
"I'm sure [director Wes Craven is] going to do a sequel, I'm sure he's going to do a sequel."
On the overall box office totals, and what he believes the final tally will be...
"Foreign [sales] are so strong that we'll do over $100 million worldwide," said Weinstein. "It's at $90 now, with about five or six major countries to go and a lot of small ones. We'll probably do $110 million."
"I wish it would have been better domestically. But it's not the worst thing in the world that's ever happened."
On plans for Scream 4 beginning a new Scream trilogy...
"When I had my first conversation with [screenwriter Kevin Williamson] about this whole thing, he had an idea for a new trilogy. And I think that was Bob Weinstein's thing also about waiting so long — if there were to be a
Scream 4, there would also probably be a
Scream 5 and a
Scream 6 sooner or later so we could construct a new trilogy that kind of stood on its own."
SCRE4M is currently in theaters now.
