Now Drew Goddard Is Brought In To Write A New Ending For WORLD WAR Z

Lost and Prometheus scribe Damon Lindelof was originally brought in to pen a new ending for World War Z, but now Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) is set to handle scripting duties, while the writer of The Wolverine may also be involved. Find out why after the jump.

Not too long ago, it was reported that Damon Lindelof had been brought in to write a new ending for World War Z; the big screen adaptation of the Max Brooks novel which stars Brad Pitt. However, issues with timing have meant that while the Prometheus and Star Trek 2 writer was able to come up with a new ending, he was unable to actually script it. For that reason, Paramount have now brought in Cabin in the Woods and Robopocalypse writer Drew Goddard. However, the studio may end up going after yet another writer (it's possible, especially as Goddard may also run into problems as he too has other commitments) in the form of Christopher McQuarrie (The Wolverine). No date has currently been set for the reshoots which will implement the new ending, but they WILL be shot by director Marc Forster.

Man this movie is gonna have a hard time getting back its money, reshooting just means a bigger budget and that just increases the chances of another box office bomb for Paramount, the next year isnt looking to good for them....

The fact they are calling this World War Z is depressing. It no longer is anything like the book as far as synopsis goes.

I'm surprised because Pitt is pretty careful about the films he decides to be a part of.

LMFAO!!!! :D

....
But the book is called World War Z...
What did you expect them to call it?
"An Oral History Of The Zombie War"?

This movie is so royally f-ed up. Marc Forster is a total hack, should have just let Brad Pitt direct it too. The Studio want to draw this thing out into a trilogy, but if getting off the ground is this hard that might not happen. They should have stuck to the book with Watchmen-like adherence.

Granted, I think Drew Goddard and Damon Lindelof are pretty decent writers, at least Paramount is pouring some serious dough into making this work. Why Marc Forster, though? The guy ruined Quantum of Solace. He has no idea what to do with big budget, big effect movies.

ha. forster is clearly not a hack. nor is he an action/tentpole director

@Fart- Lost was a very well written show! Lindelof and Cuse were great. Cabin in the Woods was pretty good, mainly bc it was original, but in no way does it compare to Lost!

Geez, this film is gonna be a mess! I suppose the ending from the book isn't going to be the ending they use in the film.

But that's considered the biggest weakness of the movie, that it's too faithful.
CBM/Adaption elitists need to think about this.
Would you rather have a faithful movie, or a good movie?
I'd much prefer the latter. By that I basically mean as long as the movie is good, they can make whatever changes they deem or feel is necessary.

It kind of sounds like they're are using the books title and just turning this into your standard zombie movie.

@CrimsonArk - Nope, I expected a movie that slightly resembled the book, at least. WWZ is one hell of a story to just ignore, like it sounds these people have.

@LAXtremist - It sounds exactly like that, unfortunately.

This is a real shame. Mel Brooks' World War Z was one of the best satires I've read in a while. It was the type of novel that should have been so easy to adapt to a movie format.

I love the book and I really have no excitement for the film.

I don’t know why they had to turn it into a single character driven narrative, star power I guess. If it had been done right the film could have been a cross between Twilight Zone the Movie and the Poseidon Adventure. The lead character traveling the globe AFTER the war gathering firsthand accounts from the survivors with each account being a separate and self contained story each with an A or B list star to head the story. That would have been far more fun to watch than just Brad Pitt running around trying to find a “cure.” SPOILER: There ain’t one. Man has to take the planet back by force.

I hate that with the way the film’s narrative is set during the war and not after; we will lose the feeling of the book, the explanation of what the world has become and how it has so radically changed as a result of the war. The film just feels like a set up for the giant set piece that is The Battle of Yonkers, an event that in the book is exciting but pales in comparison the drama of the mountain pass in India, the Chinese submarine, the description of the near medieval warfare in Europe’s citizen fortified castles and ruins, the clearing of the catacombs and that first sortie east of the Rockies. Most of those wonderful moments are going to be lost if we are forced to follow only one man’s story through WWZ.

Goddard should do a better job than Lindelof. Cowboys and Aliens was a mess, yet I liked most of his work on Lost.

When I listened to the audio book, I would image that they were in a matrix type setting. two chairs in a large open area then as the story is told the background would begin to populate with what the story teller was telling. Like when Mark H is telling the battle part; I had in my head them sitting there with a tank and gunfire chaos in the background. As he told more about what was happening i would forget he was telling us a story and more visually see it happening. I can see how it would be a hard book to translate to screen but District 9 did a good job of making the movie more doc then film. Now it looks like they are just using the title and making Pitt the hero of a story which is nothing like the book.
