RENFIELD Is Sick Of Doing Dracula's Bidding In Hilariously Gruesome First Trailer

As promised, the first trailer for Chris McKay's Renfield is now online, and Nicolas Cage makes for a far more terrifying Dracula than you may have been expecting! Check it out...

Universal Pictures has debuted the first trailer for Chris McKay's Renfield, which stars Nicolas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) as Dracula's beleaguered henchman, and Nicolas Cage (Mandy) as the lord of vampires himself.

While this clearly falls into the horror comedy category, we recently learned that the movie has been given an R-rating, and the teaser does not hold back on the gore!

The clever first-look finds Renfield joining a group therapy session where people go to vent about their horrible bosses - but the others are unaware that their new member is doing the bidding of an actual personification of evil!

Check out the red and green band trailers below along with a new poster, and let us know what you think.

Renfield is set to hit theaters on April 14, 2023, and will focus on the title character, who has "grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula’s lackey. The henchman finds a new lease on life and maybe even redemption when he falls for feisty, perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina).”

Ryan Ridley penned the script, which is based on an original story outline from Robert Kirkman. McKay will also produce alongside Samantha Nisenboim and Skybound Entertainment’s film team of Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst.

In Bram Stoker's classic novel, R.M. Renfield was introduced as one of Dr. Seward's inmates before his backstory revealed that he was actually Dracula's attorney and Jonathan Harker's predecessor. Driven mad by the evil Count, Renfield became his willing acolyte, believing he would one day be given the gift of eternal life.

The character has appeared in most adaptations of the tale, and has been played by the likes of Dwight Frye in 1931's Dracula and Tom Waits in Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 version.

Looks like it could be fun but also just fine at the same time

I think this looks fun and hilarious.

Cage's Dracula looks to be a combo of Lugosi's, Christopher Lee's and a bit of Nosferatu.

I'm thinking this is a bit of an alternative universe take on the Bram Stoker's story: where Renfield didn't end up betraying Dracula, and so Dracula wins and survivesinto the centuries instead. And Renfield is granted the power and everlasting life Dracula had promised him.

So I can see the logic of Renfield gaining powers when he consumes insects and all other sorts of organic life. Since that was what he was trying to achieve in the novel.

Not bad!

Hoult continues to do some off kilter stuff, love it.

He's be a good pick for Bond also.

Looks like they’re trying to cash in on the look and feel of What We Do In The Shadows. Nothing new or fresh here but I will still watch for Cages performance.

Looks like a damn good take on Dracula or even on Renfield. Love the comedy aspect and that it doesn't take itself too seriously anymore.

It just works, yet so many ways it can fail too...but so far it looks great, I can't wait!

I was already in just for Cage because even his worst is a worthwhile watch, but Hoult in the trailer is an added layer that I enjoyed. The absurd action movie-y scenes are a bonus, but will no doubt be what people will focus on as a negative.

One regret is I wish he brought that awful attempt at an accent from Vampire's Kiss. That shit alone was worth the movie's budget.

I honestly didn't know exactly what to expect but, this entire 'What We Do In The Shadows' vibe seems (at best) more than a bit derivative IMO. 🧐

This looks like a lot of fun. Funny but gory. Good take on the characters from the novel too. The Invisible Man was great, so hope this works too. Looks like Universal is finding a way to bring their classic monsters back after all.

Definitely fun and stupid. Cage seems to have embraced his own ridiculousness. Good for him. His career is almost like a bizarro Keanu Reeves 😂

@TheNewYorker - Love how the make-up makes him look like Bela Lugosi, but he does the facial expresions of Christopher Lee.
Wouldnt be surprised if he throws some Gary Oldman in the mix, too.
