THE STAND: Randall Flagg & Mother Abagail Face-Off In New Promo For CBS' Stephen King Adaptation

The re-adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand is set to premiere on December 17, and CBS All Access has now released a 60-second promo which contains quite a bit of new footage.

As its title suggests, "The Prophet vs. The Dark Man" teaser focuses on the opposing forces of light and darkness represented by "Mother" Abagail Freemantle (Whoopie Goldberg) and the demonic Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård). Although the two never actually meet in person (in the book, anyway), they confront one another through visions as they attempt to sway the loyalties of the main characters.

The promo also features some new shots of the Boulder Free Zone community led by James Marsden's Stu Redman, and Lloyd Henreid (Nat Wolff) introducing "The Walkin' Dude" to his followers at New Vegas.

For those unfamiliar with King's novel, The Stand deals with a global pandemic (yes, it's a scarily prescient tale) known as "Captain Tripps" which wipes out 99% of the world's population. The survivors are immune to the disease, but are ultimately forced to fight each other as some are drawn to a the light (Abagail), and others to darkness (Flagg).

New Mutants director Josh Boone, who was the driving force behind all previous attempts to adapt the book, will direct, write, and produce the upcoming series.

I suspect it is just bad timing but that this will not do well. I don't believe people will want to watch an apocalyptic tale about a pandemic in the midst of a pandemic.

Haven't heard much at all about this, but it does sound interesting (both the plot and the cast)

Looking forward to this especially since I stayed away from the original TV version some years back. It seems, at least to me, that TV is definitely doing a much better job at adapting King's work lately.

@mugens - the original tv version definitely skimped on the horror elements, but honestly they got the spirit of the novel right. it wasnt really meant to be "scary" in the traditional way. the scariest parts were honestly all human-oriented interactions and just the sense of dread at the fall of human decency.

Looks good. I just wish they made Mother Abigail actually look 108 years old like the original. Just looks like Whoopi with a white wig. 🤷‍♂️
