Joss Whedon On The Challenges Of A Solo HULK Movie

Director Joss Whedon discusses the difficulties of adapting the Hulk for a solo film. He also acknowledges that there are currently no plans for a solo outing but highlights Mark Ruffalo as a definite asset.

Joss Whedon is continuing the European festival circuit for Much Ado About Nothing. After stopping at the Dublin International Film Festival, Whedon next attended the Glassgow Film Festival and answered more Marvel related questions during the post-film Q&A session.

Question: You think it would be possible to make a good Hulk film?

Joss Whedon: Yes. But it would be very, very hard. Hulk is a tricky son of a bitch. He’s the Claudio of superheroes. Because the problem is it’s a very popular character, but it’s not a superhero. Half of it’s a superhero, half of it’s a werewolf. And you can’t structure it like a superhero movie, you can’t light it like a superhero movie. How do you develop that? It would be extremely difficult. The one thing you would have in your favour would be Mark Ruffalo. But right now I don’t know if they have plans to do that or not, because he works so well as part of a greater whole, but by himself, it’s tough. I don’t envy the guys who went before.

Still on Joss' schedule is a stop at SXSW in Texas for Bellwether Pictures' first film project. At this screening, Whedon should have a lot more of the cast accompanying him so prepare for Nathan Fillion Ant-Man questions, and attempts to get Alexis Denisof to identify who 'The Other' really is. I should also end this with the caveat that the above quote from Joss really has no bearings on the World War Hulk scoop from Latino Review as any traction on that project would commence years from now and there probably isn't anything happening with it at the moment.

We need another solo hulk IMO regardless of the difficulty. He worked perfectly in the Avengers, no reason a solo hulk movie can be incredible, especially with the hulk that whedon created in the avengers, big fan base, big money.

Soooo, no planet hulk?

We can't take this as a "no solo movie" - he said it's difficult, not impossible. And if he works better as a part of a larger team, Planet Hulk would work because of the Warbound.

I don't think this 'kills' the Planet Hulk or WWH films, just post-pones them till they create a solid solo Hulk film.

Joss needs to read some Peter David Hulk comics, before he can say what the character can & cannot do. Love the guy, but he sounds ignorant of the character as a whole.

Ive said it before and Ill say it again, the Hulk doesnt work as a stand alone character, thats why he stole the show in the Avengers cuz it wasnt the focus and just kicked ass. Take notes anyone who directs Xmen movies, use Wolverine the same way!

Challenge? Hulk was a masterpiece. TIH was ok. In The Avengers he was ok too.
The problem it's not the character, but the audience.

Best thing is, don't make another solo film, just keep him turning up in other films. That seems like the best way too go.
If you were to make another solo film , make sure it has loads of Cameo's from other characters from the Marvel universe.

But The Incredible Hulk was good, even though I do agree it's a tough character to portray in a solo film.

Planet Hulk/World War Hulk is just not a good idea for the franchise, plain and simple.

He's just saying that he doesn't know if Marvel is planning another Hulk film. Besides, something like Elmayimbe's scoop is bound to be "debunked" at some point, but turn out to be true in the long run.

Surprisingly, I actually disagree entirely with Whedon. You can shoot and light and set it up -exactly- like a superhero film; in fact, you can make it feel more like a comic book than many other superheroes. Just follow what Mark Waid is doing with Indestructible Hulk and have Banner join S.H.I.E.L.D. as a scientist, with Hulk being used as a weapon. "Hulk breaks, Banner builds" is the comic's motto right now, and it works. Having Hulk go up against the Leader's legions of Kirby-esque robots would look brilliant on screen. It's one film property that has the best chance of nailing the Jack Kirby feeling on screen. I'd actually argue that part of the problem in the past is that they focused too much on the tragic monster elements.

Sorry, but this is where Terrier got the raw end...TIH is one of my favorites....much better than Cap and Thors solos...sometimes directors are just sell outs for $$

i agree with whedon on some level, but seriously... hulk needs to have his own movie.

i get that the whole purpose of a superhero gilm is for the audience to root for the hero, but why cant you be rooting for a charatcer that causes so muuch destruction.

its a character that is basically just a jolly green giant thats misunderstood and happens to have a genius as his other half. so you hvae this completely human character for the audience to just feel for.

now i get that you cant have every hulk film being about the govt running after him, but with the avengers he is now a character that helped the govt. so how to make a movie about a monster that just helped save the world? you follow it up with the leader as the villain and focus on bruce banner using his brain, and his control of the transformatioin into the hulk to smash.
i know this isnt a no from marvel but still hulk is too awesome, bruce banner is too awesome.

whedon you were the first to get the hulk spot on,you can do it.

the hulk is more jekyll & hyde or frankenstein's monster then a werewolf.

Did Joss Wheedon just call the Hulk "part werewolf"-lol ridiculous comment

If the Avengers hadn't had Robert Downey Junior the Avengers would have been really bad

Marvel should do a Hulk movie-they are just cheap and do not want to spend the money

I want a real director to take over The Avengers so it isn't just a fun popcorn flick like the first one was...

I think he's referencing more a traditional Hulk movie like the last two, obviously a Planet Hulk film would be a different beast altogether, in terms of structuring the story.

All they need to do is make a smarter talking Hulk like in some CB runs. so his rages are more under control.

my biggest problem is the fact they made Bruce Banner a whiny bitch in the previous film as opposed to the character i know him as in the comics.

Great news! Marvel needs to concentrate in other areas. Ghost Rider, Punisher, and other failures need to be forgotten. Keep moving forward, that's what I say. Maybe 10 years down the road you can revisit this, when CGI takes the next step or two.
