This one might piss off the purists that were hoping for a more traditional take on Mary Shelly's iconic character but what we are getting is an adaptation of Kevin Greviox's graphic novel which is set in the future and tells a very different story indeed.

Here is the press release in full

Los Angeles, CA, October 7, 2011 – Aaron Eckhart will play ADAM FRANKENSTEIN in the Lakeshore Entertainment, Hopscotch Features and Lionsgate production of I, FRANKENSTEIN, commencing in Australia in January. The film was written and is to be directed by Stuart Beattie (director of Australia’s breakout hit TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN, and writer of such films as PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, G.I. JOE, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT and COLLATERAL), and is based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux, co-creator of the UNDERWORLD franchise. Lionsgate will distribute the film in the United States, Lakeshore will handle international sales and E1/Hopscotch will distribute in Australia. U.S. release is slated for February 22, 2013.

I FRANKENSTEIN is a modern-day epic: Frankenstein’s creature, ADAM, has survived to present day due to a genetic quirk in his creation. Making his way to a dark, gothic metropolis, he finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans. As writer/director, Stuart Beattie said, “Mary Shelly’s story is about the creation of the first human being. This is the story about that being becoming human.”

“This story is all about what it means to be human, and there could be no more achingly human performance than the one Aaron gave in our own RABBIT HOLE. We are so excited to see what he will bring to this role.” said Lionsgate’s co-COO and Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake of the production. “This is a wonderfully imaginative script and we are looking forward to seeing it brought to life by a talented filmmaker, and to bringing this story to our loyal genre fans.”

“We’ve tremendously enjoyed making our UNDERWORLD franchise films and we are looking forward to working with Stuart and our partners at Hopscotch and Lionsgate to create a new world for a legendary character,” said Lakeshore’s Tom Rosenberg, adding “We know that Aaron, with his proven range, depth and intelligence, is going to make an iconic ADAM.”

Troy Lum of Hopscotch said, “We have wanted to work with Stuart on a big film in Australia and when we had the opportunity earlier this year to expand our relationship with Lakeshore on the creation of a potential franchise, it all came together.”

Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi, Andrew Mason (who produced Beattie’s TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN) and Richard Wright of Lakeshore are producing the film, with Hopscotch’s Troy Lum and Kevin Grevioux as executive producers.

Michael Paseornek, Lionsgate’s President of Motion Picture Development and Production will be shepherding the project at the studio. The deal was negotiated on behalf of Lionsgate by Wendy Jaffe, EVP Business & Legal Affairs for Acquisitions, and by Rob McEntegart, Senior EVP of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group. Beattie and Eckhart are repped by CAA.

YES!!! BEST NEWS EVER!!! True, he might not be the best "fit" but he proved he had chops to be anything and with a CGIed body and monster make-up (like his Twoface), he'll pull this off without breaking a sweat! I hope they keep the noir vibe the comic had, kinda like Sin City. That would be fantabulous!

That pic from the comic book looks just like Christopher Meloni.

I can totally see Eckhart's face working with what they come up with for makeup. If the script is good, he can own the role.

@KNIGHT3000 In the book the monster was rather intelligent, for what he was.

Are they going Hollywood and calling the creation Frankenstein in this?

UltimateSpiderman- In the book, the character's name is Adam Frankenstein. So naming him something else would be stupid. Adam isn't a deranged cave or belltower dwelling monster. He's a hard working and smart thinking private eye. He now lives in a futuristic world(outliving the era he was made in) where people might not like him but aren't exactly lighting up torches and sharpening pitch forks to chase him out of town.

UltimateSpiderman- You asked: "Are they going Hollywood and calling the creation Frankenstein in this?"

So that's why i said they didn't really have a choice since it's the character's last name. I'm guessing he'll be called Adam most of the time, but Frankenstein is part of the character's name. Removing it would be stupid.

@shaman

The character is never named in the novel. In one passage he refers to himself as "the Adam of [Frankenstein's] labours," but that not intended to be his 'real' name, nor is he ever called by it, much less 'Adam Frankenstein.'

JohnnyKrypton- You're right, it's been so long since i read the comic that i just took the article's wrong information for granted. He actually refers to himself as Frank Stein.

Andre the Giant's kneecap! That's funny. I would rather see the classic redone, but after I check this out a bit more I may change my mind, just like a woman....but i'm not a woman.

This sounds pretty cool.

Aaron Eckhart is great actor and with sametype of special effects used in Underworld franchise i could easily see him behind the monster make-up.

Robert De Niro wasnt the tallest person neither but still he looked [frick]ing badass behind the make-up.

Those who complained about DeNiro as "the monster," didn't read Shelly's book. He did a decent job even though I thought he was a bad choice when I first heard him for the part. He was nowhere near the size as in the novel...but make-up, wardrobe and angles did him justice. It was a good interpretation.

This graphic novel version is obviously a spin from Shelly....thus the name "Adam [of] Frankenstein," taken from the original novel. Folks wanna be too literal sometimes. DeNiro did look great...
