Ben Kingsley Remarks On Approaching ‘The Mandarin’ For IRON MAN 3 And What To Expect

Explaining factors that went into him signing on for Iron Man 3 as the Ten Rings uber-terrorist, as well as what we should expect, hit the jump and check out what Sir Ben Kingsley says about The Mandarin.

About his initial approach to playing Tony Stark’s greatest nemesis, The Mandarin, in Marvel’s third Iron Man installment, Sir Ben Kingsley admitted to Total Film that, “I had peripheral vision of the universe. Kevin Feige came to my house in Oxfordshire. After Sexy Beast, he’d realized I could be really unpleasant on screen.

We sat down and had a nice conversation. My garden looked splendid, which I think helped...” Quickly watching both previous Iron Man films and The Avengers with “all those glorious layers,” Kingsley adds, “I didn’t have any template to copy. I’m undereducated as far as Marvel comics are concerned, and that can be a good thing, like coming to a Shakespeare play fresh rather than having done it 20 times.” Although we shouldn’t expect Iron Man 3 to focus on The Mandarin’s Ten Rings and their unknown abilities, Sir Ben Kingsley suggests we an expect focus on a “human portrayal of evil, on a grand scale. [Mandarin] released demonic layers in me...I did go a little crazy!”

Meanwhile, The Times of India is reporting that Ben Kingsley will wear threads similar to his Mandarin garb to the premieres of Iron Man 3. “Ben’s designer will travel to the state soon to narrow down on the details of the dress, namely the fabric, colors and designs. Ben wants to wear something different for all the premiers and since he had a connect with Gujarat, he decided to go for a Gujarati dress.” What do you think?

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Marvel Studios will also release “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; the sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers” on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

Thought I read a few months back how happy Marvel was with Ben and his performance, to the point where they have plans for him and the Mandarin for the future. If true my money is on him surviving.

He didn't say he wasn't interested...he said he is finally immersing himself in this world. He means no disrespect. This role has even let him tap into a darker side of himself, so don't try forming something negative from this. Everyone on the planet isn't a comic book nut like us, but it's nice to convert folk when possible. Welcome to the darkside Sir Kingsley.

I'm still surprised how he looks like he does in the comics aside from Ben Kingsley not being Chinese but I can get over that, so pumped!

Surprised more people aren't getting mad over "we shouldn’t expect Iron Man 3 to focus on The Mandarin’s Ten Rings and their unknown abilities."

I just hope this proves a point to everyone, especially those ridiculous BINO name users, that a different interpretation of a villain is a okay, as long it still works in the context of the film.

Couldn't the ring thing be misdirection? I mean they did withhold this for quite sometime.

Also, I could have sworn I saw an article on this very website where Feige said that the rings would have a function. Please, can an admin or a fellow user help me out with that info. Thanks in advance.

@NotU- I didn't say he'd out do Ledger. I said I HOPE he can bring that kind of performance to the role, the likes of which we haven't seen since Ledger. I haven't seen the movie yet so I'm not sure how it'll play out.

Newsflash to the haters: Heath Ledger also didn't read the comics for his interpretation of the Joker. He took one look at Arkham Assylum A Serious Place on Serious Earth and threw it away. And considering that there is no iconic Mandarin story like there are Joker stories, I'm fine with Kingsley adding what he wants to the role. Maybe he can even affect future interpretations of the character the way Stamp did with Zod or Meredith did with the Penguin.

His performance in "Sexy Beast" is similar with Ralph Fiennes´s performance in "In Bruges". Only Ben is even bigger asshole.

@Ramon

"Heath Ledger also didn't read the comics for his interpretation of the Joker. He took one look at Arkham Assylum A Serious Place on Serious Earth and threw it away."

Actual Ledger quote: "I sat around in a hotel room in London for about a month, locked myself away, formed a little diary and experimented with voices — it was important to try to find a somewhat iconic voice and laugh. I ended up landing more in the realm of a psychopath — someone with very little to no conscience towards his acts. He’s just an absolute sociopath, a cold-blooded, mass-murdering clown, and Chris [Nolan] has given me free rein. Which is fun because there are no real boundaries to what The Joker would say or do. Nothing intimidates him, and everything is a big joke.”"

I frankly don't care for your hipster hatred towards Nolans Batman, solely because its popular, but DON'T make up lies and spread this stupid shit on the internet.

Hah, took one look at the comic and threw it away, who the [frick] do you think you are, his mother?

Where's your source?
