BOX OFFICE: Iron Man 3 Earns $68.31 Million on Friday, on Track for 2nd Highest Opening Weekend

Iron Man 3 earned an impressive $68.31 million on Friday. Although this is significantly lower than the Avengers, it is much higher than the total for Iron Man 2. According to Box Office Mojo, if this continues, we will see Iron Man edge out Harry Potter for the record for second largest opening weekend.

Box Office Mojo has the official numbers for Iron Man 3's Friday hall. According to it, the Marvel threequel earned $68.31 million. This puts it at number 8 for top single day grosses. Calling Iron Man's take "massive," Box Office Mojo noted that this number fell significantly behind The Avengers' $80.8 million. However, it was significantly larger than Iron Man 2's $51.2 million.

If Iron Man 3 continues to perform like this, Box Office Mojo estimates that it will have a weekend gross somewhere between $170 and $175 million. This puts it significantly below The Avengers' $207.44 million. However, a gross in this range would be high enough to edge Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 from the number 2 spot ($169.19 million).

If this end up happening, then four of the five top opening weekends would belong to comic book movies (with The Avengers, Iron Man 3, The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight taking the first, second, fourth and fifth spots, respectively).

What do you think? Is Box Office Mojo spot on? Will Iron Man 3 take the #2 spot?
