Iron Man 2 Update: Scoring

Director Jon Favreau announces the beginning of scoring for Iron Man 2!

I'm not a big fan of "social messaging" anything, but I cannot deny the appeal--and the power--of these modern conventions. When studios are now posting exclusive information on Facebook and actors and directors are promoting their projects on Twitter, you have to stop and take notice.

So, today I am (reluctantly) offering news from Twitter-land. In this case, it's a pretty important step in the process of filmmaking and it pertains to one of CBM's most highly anticipated properties: Iron Man 2.

This news comes today from director Jon Favreau's verified user account:

First day in London scoring Iron Man [2]. Takes a day to stop white knuckling the backseat driving with the driver on the right.

Why is scoring so important? It's the music! Just pop in any recent DVD you have laying around and check out one of the deleted scenes. They typically cut these scenes before the scoring begins, so you can see how boring a movie is without the music included.

Ramin Djawadi scored the rock-centric score to Iron Man, but Favreau's Elf collaborator, John Debney is scoring Iron Man 2. While Debney typically crafts a more "orchestral" sound with his scores, the recent news that AC/DC will release an Iron Man 2-related album means we're probably going to be rocking it again in the sequel.

I wonder if it's just a coincidence that Jon is in London, while Joe is going to London for Captain America.

@MarvelFreshman: It's more likely that Marvel Studios is simply using the same British companies for their movies.

However, it is likely that Favreau will show up on the set of Captain America at some point, especially if there is going to be any crossover stuff. Stark's old man? The Mandarin?

Chris Hemsworth showed up on the set of Iron Man 2, but that doesn't mean Thor will be in Iron Man 2.

@MPP: They'll probably CGI you in, like most of Don Cheadle's scenes!

i have always been impressed with the scoring of movies.
the majority of songs on my mp3 are soundtracks from the Dark Knight to Transformers.
although there are a few that stand out to me like John Williams. did you know that he was contacted by Bryan Singer for the first X-film?
he had to turn it down because of scheduling conflicts unfortunatley.

so here's to a good Iron Man 2 score and film!

I love film music, and I loved the first Iron Man's score by Ramin Djawadi. That's why I'm bummed Djawadi won't be returnign to score this film. John Debney is a great composer, no doubt, but I hope they still keep Djawadi's basic Iron Man theme.

The first Iron Man score was lacking. It wasn't bad but it didn't lift anything up on screen, it just ran along side it. One area they needed to improve on was the film's score so I'm hoping they get it right with the new guy. Epic music brings the emotion of what you're seeing to another level.

For Thor I'd expect something of a mix of tribal and Celtic and a bit of opera.

I'd laugh if Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" plays at anytime during Captain America.

I'm just parroting again, for the most part, but...

I've got to say what they did with the Star Trek logo reveal is probably the most emotionally intense thing I've heard in a long while. It's so simple, only like four notes and two bars, but very elegant.

TDK's score is also amazing and brilliant. You have the Joker and Two Face themes playing off of eachother for duality. After watching the blu rays (I just got them like last month) I gained great insight.

But there's so much more great scoring out there, this is just the best of the super mainstream.

With Iron Man, I was impressed how they took the Iron Man song, cut it up, and made it sound fresh and new... really that song is almost 40 years old and it still sounded great (and I'm not a huge fan of Sabbath).

Hopefully they'll use some Zepplin in Thor.
