UPDATE: Since the posting of this article (from yesterday), MacGruber's critical reviews over at RottenTomatoes have fallen below that of Iron Man 2. Thank God! The planets are aligned once again! Of course, I'm still going to see this.
This from BeatWeek...
MacGruber makes its box office debut tonight as the movie version of the SNL sketch is unleashed on the public. And while the movie had widely been expected to turn out to be one of the worst movies of all time, the critics say different, as eighty percent of the formal reviews posted thus far for the MacGruber movie have been of the positive variety. The critical approval represents a revelation for the movie, which seemingly had three strikes against it due to the fact that SNL is currently in one of its worst down cycles ever, movies based on SNL sketches have rarely turned out well since Wayne’s World set the bar nearly twenty years ago, and most importantly, the one-note MacGruber sketches are always exactly the same and never particularly clever or funny.
Nonetheless, critics have thus far placed the Macgruber movie ahead of the massively popular Iron Man 2, which has thus far only seen seventy-four percent positive reviews from critics. Those reviews were good enough for a reported $52 million at the box office; we’ll begin finding out tonight whether MacGruber fares as well with the public as it has thus far with the media.
