RED CARPET REVIEW: Emily Blunt Bounced from Iron Man 2 - Rourke Still in the Running

We learned last night on E! that Fox has exercised the option to keep Emily Blunt onboard "Gulliver's Travels," which means that she definitely can't be the Black Widow in Iron Man II. On the other front, Robert Downey Jr said that they are still trying to work a deal with Mickey Rourke...

On E!'s post show at the red carpet of some party, Jon Favreau said that Fox exercised its ["Gulliver's Travellers"] option on Emily Blunt, and that she definitely won't be in 'Iron Man 2.' The reporter was chatting with Favreau and asking about what he can tell them about 'IM2.' He said Mickey Rourke isn't officially cast but that he is a fan. Then she asked about Emily and Favreau said that about Fox exercising their option, which I hadn't heard before. I thought they were still trying to make it work. He said he was disappointed but didn't say anything about Scarlett Johansson replacing her or anyone else taking the role.

In an interview with Robert Downey Jr, Idol host Ryan Seacreast asked about Mickey Rourke being in Iron Man 2 and Downey said that they're still in negotiations. "They should've sewn up the deal before Oscars, but that is sometimes how the business stuff goes." He then went on to say that they are slaving on a script that will do the first movie justice.

I've heard from EMPIRE magazine that Black Widow is going to be Stark's assistant, but that makes no sense at all, what about Pepper Potts and why would she be an assistant!!!!

Hey Rorschach01, Im a blunt fan,(of a diffrent kind ofcourse), but anyways,FattSmelliott , As of now in the comics tony stark is the Director of S.H.E.I.D., and black widow works under him, that is the only sense i can see were Empire got there info from, I highly doubt tho thats gonna happen in the movie.

And oh yea, Olga was in Max Payne also, she can play a hore all to well!!

I agree give the role to OLGA. Hopefully they can get a good script. The number 2's in the comic book world have been very well thus far. Let's keep the streak alive IM2.

dude u guys calm down about scarlett not being right for the role, i mean, how many people thought heath ledger would be right for the joker and that turned out great... better than great..... well except for him dying but ya u get my point

adamant877 - 2/23/2009, 4:30 PM
It could possibly be that Natasha is "infiltrating" Stark Enterprises as well, we don't know the plot details yet.

And as for Scarlett for Black Widow... joob234, dude, she's NOT RIGHT FOR THE PART! lol
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 2/23/2009, 4:54 PM
Well i got no probs with Scarlett for BLACK WIDOW!!! Bet she'll be great if she gets it!! I think alot of fanboys dont like her now coz of THE SPIRIT movie lol!! Anyway NO ULTIMATE NICK FURY!!! Heh heh!!!
adamant877
adamant877 - 2/23/2009, 5:10 PM
I like Scarlett Johanssen, and I haven't even seen the Spirit, but I honestly just think that it would be a really poor casting choice.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/23/2009, 5:13 PM
Scarletts not a bad actress but lets look at the big picture. Black Widow is a tall, slender, Russian red head. Johannson is a short, voluptuous American Blonde. I know she can dye her hair, put on an accent but why not just cast someone thats better for the role..its that simple..and for the record i always thought Ledger would at least be a half decent Joker..turns out it was an understatement!

Tons of people thought RDJR would be terrible as Tony Stark and look how that turned out. I trust Favreau on whoever he chooses.

wow LEEE777, u sure hate Ultimate Nick Fury, all i gotta say is, u name another actor who got asked to potray a well known comic character in the comics, Let me guess LEEE777, u must be a conservative.

loganoneil - 2/23/2009, 7:19 PM
I agree with Ror - RDJ was almost TOO perfect for the role... almost as if he (dare I say it, yes I know what I've said about this in the past...) was born to play the part.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/23/2009, 7:25 PM
Zinext - I totally agree with LEEE777 (and NO, I'm NOT a conservative!). I understand that Ulitmate Nick Fury's physical appearance in the comics was based partially on SLJ, but if Jackson wants to be a baby and hold out for more money, I say, "SCREW HIM!" There are plenty of other (more talented) actors (seriously, how many different ways can one play the role of 'angry black man'?) who could take the part (can you say 'Denzel Washington' or 'Lawrence Fishburn'?). I truly don't believe that one actor MUST play a part (although, as stated in my previous post, RDJ comes REALLY close with Tony Stark!)...
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/23/2009, 7:27 PM
...and besides, SLJ was only in 'Iron Man' for 30 seconds (at the VERY end of the film AFTER the major credits) - who's REALLY gonna' miss him?
zinext
zinext - 2/23/2009, 8:34 PM
loganoneil, There is plentey of talented black actors, but my point was marvel made fury in his image!!!! as far as Sam not being talented, go 2 any hood barbershop and say that u might get cussed out!! U can say any black actor can play an angry black man, that sounds like somthin alot of white guys would say, but as far as most black people are concerd, sam is a brother that takes no shit from nobody, and thats were him and nick fury are one in the same, and sides, none of us really kno the extent of his and marvels situation, so i dont speak on it.

LEEE777 - 2/24/2009, 2:29 AM
LOL GUYS!!!! Its not SLJ im really on about! What it is is, MARVEL UNIVERSE the Universe where THE AVENGERS are set, FURY ain't African American, he's white, and what im saying is, if MARVEL was making THE ULTIMATES in a few years then id be one of the first to want SLJ but their not its AVENGERS!!!! ; ) Scarlet would make a great BLACK WIDOW better anyway than the chic from Resident Evil,, cant spell her name lol, that ppl have said would be good, anyway ULTIMATE UNIVERSE OUT!! ; )
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 2/24/2009, 2:35 AM
MARVEL should offer another role for SLJ!!! The Live action BLACK PANTHER that they are gonna do would be so cool for SAM!!! I know you say WESLEY SNIPES but id see him as BLADE still!!! Hopefully ol' WES can get to do BLADE 4, with a real villain like MORBIUS or something!! :thumbs

loganoneil - 2/24/2009, 10:58 AM
zinext - I didn't say '...any black actor can play an angry black man...', I said that Sam Jackson is a bit one-dimesional when it comes to portaying different roles - they're all just variations on a single THEME! A more versatile actor (say Washington or Fishburn) in my opinion, would bring more depth and character development to the role, as opposed to Jackson just screaming obscenities and constantly looking like the DP just raped his pet cat! I have the same feelings about Jack Nicolson - how can you call it 'acting' when you play the same part over and over again (namely "yourself")? It's not a 'black' thing... it's a 'TALENT' thing!
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/24/2009, 11:08 AM
... and let's face it, this whole thing with Sam and Marvel can be boiled down to one thing - $$$MONEY$$$! If the prima dona wants more money ('cause he can smell the residuals and KNOWS Ultimate Fury was physically based on him), why shouldn't the studio shop the part around? Think about it - he's literally holding the role hostage - as a fan, doesn't THAT piss you off (I know it makes me furious!)? 'Mega-star' salaries are part of the reason movies have become SOOOOO expensive to make! I say "SCREW 'EM ALL!" If he doesn't 'want' the role, give it to someone who does (who could possibly do a BETTER JOB and for LESS MONEY!). That extra cash can be pumped back into the film production, making a better over-all experience for the viewers and ultimate end-consumers of the finished piece! It all comes down to this, they're not making these movies just to stroke their own egos (although it sometimes SEEMS that way), they're making them for US - the public! Without 'US', there would be no 'THEM' (they just need to be reminded of that from time to time...)!
MarkCassidy

I agree about Jackson but lets not go tarring Mr Nicholson with the same brush! He may have lapsed into a bit of a caricature of himself and got a bit lazy in the last few years but he has given some of the best performances in movie history. Check out some of his less "manic" roles in 5 Easy Pieces, One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, The Crossing Guard, Easy Rider, The Pledge etc.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/24/2009, 2:03 PM
Ror, they all are BRILLIANT movies, but I contend that Jack (in ALL of them) was just being 'himself'! About the only film I can think of that was a stretch for him was the bit part of the masochistic dental patient in the original 'Little Shop of Horrors'!
Talontd
Talontd - 2/24/2009, 2:58 PM
DAMN GUYS, i don't think Sam is getting a fare shake on this! SLJ has been in a TON of movies, and I have to agree that he is loud and angry in most (don't really agree with the "angry black guy" thing), but due to the amt of his movies his other roles seem to get forgotten like...

Patriot Games
Losing Isaiah
Jurassic Park
Sphere
The Negotiator
The Great White Hype
Deep Blue Sea
Eve's Bayou
Coach Carter
Unbreakable - don't know if this counts but i'd be angry too if everytime i moved i broke a damn bone!

Then if you add the Roles where he is playing someone in the Military (yelling is sort of a requirement...)

S.W.A.T.
Basic
Rules of Engagement

My point is, dude has skills. It does seem like most of the roles that he plays a different type of character are "black movies" you guys may or may not be familiar with. And I agree he is a "character" actor, but (Ultimate) Nick Fury is completely in his range and there isn't a doubt in my mind he would OWN the part.

Just my .02

My thoughts on this are just that if he's holding the part ranson for more money, I say the studio has EVERY right to shop it around to another actor.

Talontd - 2/24/2009, 3:10 PM
Oh yea,

Any comicbook fan who thought RDJ wouldn't make a good Iron Man is a F*ckin @ssclown. You swap "gifted inventor" with "gifted actor" and he IS Tony Stark.
Talontd
Talontd - 2/24/2009, 3:14 PM
LOGANONEIL-

If that were true, then I would wholeheartedly agree with you. It's just that my perception of him doesn't really see that as possible. I've read interviews with him (Ebony, Jet, etc.) where he talks about why he's made so many movies and he's like, "I just like to stay working. If the money is okay, and the script won't ruin my career, I'm doing it!"

I personally think this is all BS. His agent is probably just holding out for more money (his job), but if they start talking about bringing someone else in, i think he'll sign.

Please God, i hope so. lol.

Jackson does have skills, but the fact is he rarely uses them! He tends to fone in alot of performances..recently Black Snake Moan was an exception. Logan you could say the exact same thing about De Nero or Pacino! Just because they are not nessesarily "chameleons" like Depp or Bale, doesnt mean they are playing themselves. In fact you could say De Nero has played less of a variety of characters than Nicholson has

ROR-

Yea dude, he murdered Black Snake Moan! He was great. And yea, De'Niero is a character actor as well!
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/24/2009, 3:29 PM
I would agree with De Niro (to a minor extent - anyone remember him as the cross-dressing Captain Shakespeare in 'Stardust'?), but am hesitant with Pacino. Pacino has done some AMAZING work in theater-based roles - just watch 'Merchant of Venice' or 'Looking for Richard' (if you're into Shakespeare), or the independet films 'Chinese Coffee' or 'Angels in America'. He (like De Niro) can easily fall into portaying characatures of themselves though (can you say 'Righteous Kill'?)
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/24/2009, 3:43 PM
Talontd - don't get me wrong about Sam Jackson... the POTENTIAL for great acting is there, but as Ror pointed out, he's just one of many actors who seems to have gotten lazy in recent years and slipped into a comfortable characature (the 'angry-black-guy' I was describing before) that the viewing audience has almost come to expect from him (so I guess you could say it's a two-way street!)...
Talontd
Talontd - 2/24/2009, 4:12 PM
LOGANONEIL-

Hey, can't argue with that, well said. All of those guys have gotten lazy as the years roll by, Jackson, De'Niro, AND Pacino.

At least they are making room for some great younger actors like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dijmon Hounsou, Leonardo DiCaprio, Derek Luke, Josh Harnette, etc. etc.

I can see why they would want Scarlet Johansson to be Black widow...she is Polish & Danish Descent even though she was born in America [new york]..and may her life with "Ryan Reynolds" [her husband go well, and prosper, because I like both of them!]

But I have to agree with "Rorschach01"...She is like the all around blonde, I would characterize her as american...she doesnt really remind me of "American when i look at scarlet...Jessica simpson "looks VERY all american blonde"...but back to the point...I cant see her play that part either.

WE're looking for TALL, looks the part, and looks natural with red hair, [but can be blonde like the Cover for Black Widow: Pale Little Spider #1, starring Yelena Belova. Art by Greg Horn.] and can pull the russian accent off....who can that be?

I can see "Natalia Vodianova" as Black Widow...but since shes a model...can she act? She has the accent. She has the looks. Shes 5'9 without heels...and she currently 26....Pure Russian...look her up...very beautiful russian model. What ya think?

Talontd,Djimon Hounsou is 44, u call that young?? but anyways, all the actors u said are "lazy" i beg to differ, all those guys arnt so much range actors as DiCaprio, they are more persona based, or in other words, their personality is incorparated in every roll they play,or that creators decide to talor make it for them!!! My point is that some actors have a personality that film makers gravitate 2 for certain roles, the actors themselves cant help that their personality traits fit so well in 2 the role. Here is an example u can all understand,Robert Downey Jr added his swagger to tony starks character, this way, Downey acted more natural and he seemed in his comfort zone threw the movie, did it hurt Downey to do so????
