Robert Downey Jr. Talks Iron Man 3

The actor behind the dual Tony Stark/Iron Man persona says he is hopeful for a third film, and share where he gets his inspiration for story ideas...

Iron Man & Iron Man 2 star Robert Downey Jr. will be the first to admit that he is out of touch with Marvel characters outside of Tony Stark's close circle of friends and enemies. In an interview with MTV News, Downey expanded on that point:

"I'm the expert on me and Tony and Iron Man and that story, [but] once it starts intersecting with the other stuff, I start losing track," Downey said last weekend. "Thankfully, there are experts."

Regarding the likelihood of an Iron Man 3 movie announcement in the near future, Downey seemed hopeful, "I think it's going to go down. I know 'Avengers' is supposedly first on their docket, and we'll see how all that pans out sooner rather than later."

"I have some pretty strong ideas [for 'Iron Man 3'], but they never seem to be too discordant with what the creative execs at Marvel are thinking anyways,"
he said.

Where does he get his inspiration for the story ideas? From the comics, of course. That should be evident to fans of the Iron Man films, since many plot points were taken directly from the books. "There's a little bit of a bunch of different storylines from different decades. I always feel like — just like with 'Sherlock Holmes,' you're not going to do any better than you will looking back at [Arthur Conan] Doyle's stories."

At least he has his head on straight. "...you're not going to do any better than you will looking back ..." Use the source material, stick closely to it, and you can't go wrong.

@a7 and zemus- Did either of you actually watch the interview? He said he reads Iron Man. He said that he knows all about Iron Man and Tony but once it gets into other marvel properties he loses track.

RDJ seems to really want to do all the right things concerning the comics. He really takes it seriously. I really hope Iron Man 2 is good. If he reads the comics that is even better.

Every interview I see, RDJ seems to go a little more retro looking. He looks like he is ready to direct a late 70's/early 80's porn movie. Rose glasses, members only jacket, etc...

Marvel hit a home run casting him. Let's hope they can do it again with next year's movies

@Ryden

He gets very GENERAL when he mentions anything with the comics, and asked about an arch he makes no mention of one. He doesn't need to have to read the comics, it would just be nice that's all.

Actors who aren't fans of the comic have proven to be fantastic and sometimes do things fans wouldn't giving us a more interesting take. the UR-example being Heath Ledger, said he wasn't a comics fan and did a fantastically unique take on the character

@Ryden haha did YOU! actually watch the interview lol he never specifically said he reads Iorn Man comics lol... this guy = /

Interview are just PR any way and they say what they need to say, true or not. Im sure RDJ is smart enough to take what he needs, weather he reads the books or not is pointless considering that he is probably one of the best translations of a comicbook character to film.

He and Fav have made apparent that they are familiar with the bigger iconic storylines like Demon in a Bottle, and Armor Wars, so no worries. Invincible has always been a wildly inconsistent book, as far as the continuity goes.

@Multi. That was my way of trying to cutely ask if you had heard anything from your contacts about Hawk's writings. He asked me to ask you if you were on CBM today, since his computer is messed up again.
