"Carter is an American Civil War veteran who goes to sleep in a cave after being chased by Apache Indians and wakes up on Mars, here called Barsoom. Formerly an Earthlike world, it became less hospitable to life due to its advanced age: as the oceans evaporated, and the atmosphere thinned, the planet devolved into partial barbarism with the inhabitants hardened and warlike, fighting one another to survive. Barsoomians distribute scarce water supplies via a worldwide system of canals, controlled by quarreling city-states. The Martian atmosphere is maintained by a power plant. Carter rescues a humanoid Red Martian princess, Dejah Thoris, from the belligerent four-armed Green Martians, whose respect he gains for his superior strength and fighting ability. He enlists the Green Martians’ assistance in winning a civil war, and saves Mars from destruction when its atmosphere plant malfunctions."

Filming on the movie, which is based on the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, has been under-way since the beginning of the year and is directed by Andrew Stanton. It's release date means that it will come out somehwere Men In Black III and Star Trek 2.

So I still don't fully understand, is John Carter of Mars officially a Pixar film, or is it just being done by a former Pixar director?

Being unfamiliar with the books, I was unsure of this when they first announced it, but with the plot synopsis and the stellar cast,it looks like it's shaping up to be a pretty epic film.

the books are great! The marvel comic series was great, I really hope Taylor Kitsch doesn't screw up this character as he did Gambit!!!!

I don't get why they aren't releasing it for two years, but the filming started a few months ago. It seems risky to me for film companies to wait two years to release. By then technology and improvements to the industry can make their film not seem as up-to-date as others that release in a more timely manner. Still excited to see this one.

Ranger: Filming started ages ago and I have seen unconfirmed reports that it has wrapped. I don't understand the delay in release either.

Damn, I was hoping it would be out a lot sooner. Well, so long as they make it look good in that time I suppose. Just means I will have to go back and read them again to keep me happy.
