Carter is an American Civil War veteran who goes to sleep in a cave after being chased by Apache Indians and wakes up on Mars, here called Barsoom. Formerly an Earthlike world, it became less hospitable to life due to its advanced age: as the oceans evaporated, and the atmosphere thinned, the planet devolved into partial barbarism with the inhabitants hardened and warlike, fighting one another to survive. Barsoomians distribute scarce water supplies via a worldwide system of canals, controlled by quarreling city-states. The Martian atmosphere is maintained by a power plant. Carter rescues a humanoid Red Martian princess, Dejah Thoris, from the belligerent four-armed Green Martians, whose respect he gains for his superior strength and fighting ability. He enlists the Green Martians’ assistance in winning a civil war, and saves Mars from destruction when its atmosphere plant malfunctions.

John Carter Of Mars hits theaters on June 8, 2012 directed by Andrew Stanton and starring Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Hayden Church, and Willem Dafoe.

bleed: good stuff my man!!

SuperArgo: John Carter is more of a mix of the
Highlander,Hawkman and Flash Gordon. In the comics
he's a immortal(highlander),experiences several
deaths and rebirths(Hawkman),and his adventures
takes him from EARTH to the planet MARS(Flash Gordon)

John has superhuman strength,endurance,and
durability because of the heavier gravity
of EARTH as opposed to MARS.

So to me Carter is way more interesting
as a character than Gordon. I
wouldnt call him a poor man's version
of Gordon I think your talking about
Buck Rogers!!

Still not like Kitsch as John Carter. It just doesnt seem right role for him. Charlie Hunnam, Daniel Cudmore or Jared Padalecki or Karl Urban would have been interesting choice.
Hope Kitsch proofs me wrong thou and ends up to be great in the movie.

Considering that John Carter first appeared in 1912, decades before Flash Gordon, I wouldn't consider him a "poor man's" version of the latter. And because of this, I wouldn't call him a mix of anybody. He's definitely an original.

@ SuperArgo and BLADE4040: John Carter of Mars is based on the original novels "A princess of Mars" written by Edgar Rice Burroughs during 1911 published 1917-1964. So the John Carter stories are more original.

The Marvel comics series from 1977-1979 confuse alot of people that the stories and character are imitations of Buck Rogers,Flash Gordon or even a space version of Conan lmao!!

If you seen the "old school" John Carter ART and the Conan ART side by side you will see the similarities.

It's more like the creators of flash gordon(created 1935),highlander,hawkman and numerous other fictional characters (think star wars)and stories are inspired by Edgar rice burrough's original "Barsoom" novels. Or maybe other fictional writers like Robert E. Howard and others...

A poor mans flash gordon? I agree with BLADE Thats Buck Rogers haha!

@avenginson: You summed it up exactly. Definitely original story and characters. One of "THE" original science fiction/adventure/fantasies.

Thanks Kidsoul. And Buck Rogers came out around 5 years before Flash Gordon. I used to love the Buck Rogers TV series from the 70's, and I recently found the complete episodes on dvd for 10 bucks. It's kinda boring now but it has it's moments. The Flash Gordon movie has definitely stood the test of time though, if you're into that kinda thing.
