JOKER Director Todd Philips Spent A Year Convincing Warner Bros. To Make The Movie R-Rated

We now know that Todd Philips' standalone Joker movie will be rated R, but the director has revealed that convincing Warner Bros. to make the film more adult-orientated took some doing.

Apparently, then-studio chief Kevin Tsujihara and then-production president Greg Silverman were completely on board with Philips' idea for the character, but shifting regimes at WB meant that the new studio heads were a little more apprehensive.

“It was a year-long process from when we finished the script just to get the new people on board with this vision, because I pitched it to an entirely different team than made it,” Phillips told The LA Times. “There were emails about: ‘You realize we sell Joker pajamas at Target.’ There were a zillion hurdles, and you just sort of had to navigate those one at a time.... At the time I would curse them in my head every day. But then I have to put it in perspective and go, ‘They’re pretty bold that they did this.’”

Philips also touched on the fact that his film will not follow any of the established comic book lore surrounding the iconic Batman villain, and is fully aware that this will come in for a lot of backlash from the hardcore fans.

“There are always going to be naysayers, but from what I gather about the momentum of the movie and the response to the teaser we put out, the majority of fans seem to be excited about going down a different road,” Philips said. “But also this will not be the last Joker movie ever made,” he added. “It might be the last one Joaquin and I do, but someone else is going to come along and do another one, just like with Spider-Man. So if you don’t like this one, don’t worry — it’ll get reinvented again."

Joker has its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this Saturday, so first reactions should be online soon after. In the meantime, let us know what you thought about Philips' comments down below, and check out some screen-grabs from yesterday's new trailer.

not sure how well the story will go without Batman , but after finally finishing up the batman who laughs ... i realize there's so many directions JOKER as a character can go ...i know phoenix will put on a performance since he's already a little off

I feel like you can't tell this kind of story without it being rated R. If he really wants to capture the gritty, seedy, boots-on-the-ground feel of Taxi Driver and other character studies like it then a PG-13 rating would be at odds at achieving that goal. It's the same reason why I think you could get away with giving Deadpool a PG-13, since none of the actual thematic material necessarily needed an R-rating, but not Logan - a movie that's very much about violence, and its ramifications.
Just my two cents, anyways.

Making the film rated R is a mistake. Not a huge issue since this is a one off film, but since the character is a comic book character it should be more accessible to younger people.

@TheDoctor1225 - the leaked script jas obviously changed

There was nudity in the leaked script and the film is only R for “sexual images “

If this does well maybe they'll do more standalone out of continuity projects, I'd love a standalone golden age inspired Superman movie set in the 30's. The novel "It's Superman" would be a pretty good place to start.

The amazing thing about the trailers is, this is an R Rated film, that didn’t need to use the word f*ck in the trailer, have a red band trailer or completely shove down our throats to remind us that this is going to be R Rated, to make this as chilling and creepy as it already has without them.

This film, however funny at first it sounded, has been ticking every single box I’ve needed it to tick up until release date.

If the leaked script is anything to go by then he is using the word Reinvented very loosely. Nothing in an origins exactly screams joker and this notion that wherever he goes he gets teased thing comes off as real high school kidish or Dare I say amazing Spider-Man 2 electro ish.

@TheDoctor1225 - dat cinematography doh!! *Kisses hand like stereotypical italians in movies*

In all seriousness, I will give this movie a chance but other than being filmed really well it just isn't doing much for me and I truly believe if Joaquin Phoenix wasn't in this the reception would be different to the exact same things we're seeing.
