“The first time I saw Josh Brolin dressed as Hex was dizzying,” admitted Gray. “I mean there’s Jonah Hex right in front of me in a surreal moment I’ll always remember.”
Both Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, the minds behind the current run of Hex comics, visited the New Orleans set where Brolin, Megan Fox and the rest of the cast have been filming. Gray was also able to discuss the character with Brolin himself.
“He was very happy to sit and talk with Jimmy Palmiotti and I about the role, his portrayal and overall feeling of the film,” said the writer. “He was loving the role and you could see it pouring out of him during takes.”
Not only is Brolin nailing the role of Hex, according to Gray, but the film itself is hitting the perfect tone.
“The approach they’re taking is exactly right, straight western with a style that breaks from the perception that a western should be slow moving,” he described. “I wish I could talk more about it in greater detail. Being on and around the set was surreal.”
The released images of Brolin as Hex have left fans a little disappointed, as he does not look nearly as horrifically scarred as he does in the comic. So if Gray was that exited, maybe he knows something we don't about the characters final appearance.
