BOX OFFICE: DREDD 3D Takes The #1 Spot In The UK
Released two weeks ahead of its debut in North America, DREDD 3D has taken the #1 spot at the UK box office, holding of stiff competition from a few other big new releases. Hit the jump to find out exactly how well the 2000 AD adaptation did!
DREDD 3D has become the first 18 certificate movie (that's equivalent to an R-Rating for those of you over in the US) to take the #1 spot in the UK since 2010's Saw 3D. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it successfully held off competition from other big releases such as Anna Karenina, Lawless and That's My Boy. The Pete Travis helmed adaptation of the 2000 AD comic - starring Karl Urban as the iconic character - earned a little over £1 million ($1.65 milliion) in total. During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson, a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan's inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound's control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.
