BOX OFFICE: DREDD 3D Takes The #1 Spot In The UK

Great - I hope this transcends across to other countries! It's a great film worthy of a sequel!

@INSTANTJUSTICE - There you go again trying to make it personal. This is exactly what it says about me, it says I don't think $1.6 million bucks is anything to rave about for a weekend from ANY FILM, least of all a film about a comic character based on his home turf!

Dredd's been around longer than Harry Potter, most of us who were reading it when we were kids in the 70's still buy the comic today. A $1.6 million weekend doesn't say much about that fanbase and the wide appeal of Dredd and I don't find that something to shout about, NO!

If it doubles that taking next week or at least survives a less than %40 percent drop.. YOU'LL FIND ME SHOUTING! :-D

If it takes over $150 million world-wide in the next three weeks before the theatre/studio ticket margin split starts going against them.. YOU'LL FIND ME SHOUTING! :-D

When they announce a guaranteed sequel for the cinema, not some crummy straight to home video release.. YOU'LL FIND ME SHOUTING! :-D

Until then forgive me if I don't don the party hat for a $1.6 million weekend! A regular Sunday omnibus of Eastenders would make more than that if they decided to show it in the cinema!

I hope there is a sequel great film.

@INSTANTJUSTICE - As far as bashing the film, I stand by most of what I said about it before seeing it. It just hasn't been the film to talk about since I saw both Dredd and Lawless in the same day and Lawless was by far the movie to "talk" about!

Dredd left me empty, it's a better film than the crap the Danny Canon bunch wrapped around Stallone's neck but that film was turned a movie star vehicle like every other Arnie and Stallone film of that period. This Dredd flick is about Dredd, it does a damn good job of delivering the essence of the character. The uniform has been my main peev but it worked better on screen than in pictures although still misses the point of the pristine regalia from the comic's origins. And for everything they did great about Dredd, their low budget laid flat with everything else.

1: The city was nothing like a city of the future concept designs like the comic but just another expansion of any city anywhere with a shanty townships like South Africa. No city built after a war should look exactly like the one before it, even the regular citizens clothing lacked any decent concept design other than stuff you can buy from Primark or TK-Max!

2: The entire Justice system was presented as an easy to corrupt establishment that are undermanned and barely clinging onto any level of control over their city. The same mistake Stallones version made to a lesser degree. The Judges are supposed to rule with a vice grip, they are supposed to be individual shining examples and beacons of justice the citizens fear beyond any criminal. Not some regular cop doing it for the money who can be bought off as long as he makes it through his shift! There was no reference to the hierarchy of the Judges establishment, no Chief Judge, no council of ruling judges, no SJS, no real display of the totalitarian system its supposed to be. What we got instead is a few notches above the world of Mad Max #1 before his family get killed.

I could go on about the sacrifices they made to the concept of the comic to make a violent action flick that can have enough appeal to make all the creditors who funded the project a nice enough profit. But it still managed to do the most important thing aside of all that, and deliver an accurate enough presentation of the character that's worthy of the comic's long history. So I hope it makes enough money to do more, but better! 6.5/10

I thought the film was brilliant, it served as a great way to introduce Dredd to the audience who haven't read any of the comicstrips.

The have done the right thing by grounding this story with just humans and nothing too overwhelming for people, save that for a sequal if the film does well, I for one am looking forward to more Dredd as they nailed him perfectly in this interpretation.

R ratings over here are strange - some will be released as 15s, and a few as 18s.

God I hope so if it wasn't #1 in UK then you know it sucks.

You people are missing the point here by fixating on the 1 million dollar gross.

This film cost 45 million to make. It made number #1 opening week and is generating great critical and popular reviews.

Positive word of mouth will spread into the states when it comes time to open it up there.

Cant wait to see it. :)

Those other films are considered tough competition?

I still don't consider an average of 7.1/10 being critically great reviews, but to each their own.
