DREDD 3D has become the first 18 certificate movie (that's equivalent to an R-Rating for those of you over in the US) to take the #1 spot in the UK since 2010's Saw 3D. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it successfully held off competition from other big releases such as Anna Karenina, Lawless and That's My Boy. The Pete Travis helmed adaptation of the 2000 AD comic - starring Karl Urban as the iconic character - earned a little over £1 million ($1.65 milliion) in total. You can read my 5* review of DREDD 3D by clicking HERE.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson, a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan's inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound's control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

STARRING:

Karl Urban as Judge Dredd
Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson
Lena Headey as Madeline Madrigal
Domhnall Gleeson as Travis Synders
Langley Kirkwood as Judge Lex
Francis Chouler as Judge Guthrie
Deobia Oparei as Judge T.J. Alvarez

That's not really big box office even for here in the UK. It's rated 18 which is like NC-17 to you guys in the states. That kinda means it's gonna have to haul ass to make any real box office but it should make a pretty decent profit eventually, enough to make a better sequel anyway.

Basically what Dredd made in one weekend is just a little over what TED took in the UK in its 5th weekend ($1.5 million). Considering TED has made over $44 million after 5 weeks and opened with a $14 million weekend as opposed to Dredd's $1.6 million weekend, then you realise Dredd's looking at something around $10 million tops if it's lucky by the end of its run.

Nothing to shout about, just the top film in a very slow weekend. In the USA this was the worse weekend this year for box office, this weekend in the UK was kinda equal to that.

@teabag - I totally agree, but to say its had next to no advertising is not being realistic. I saw Dredd posters on the side of buses, tv adds, trailers in the cinema etc. It's had more if not the same as John Carter did here in the UK and JC was a PG flick!

Far as I'm concerned its box office is zip to hype about taking into consideration he is our top comic character in this country and most of his fans are adults, not children. The brunt of his box office is expected in the opening weekend here because all those fans will make the effort to see it just like a Harry Potter or Twilight flick release and then it will enter a steep decline like they do. $1.6 million for a fan-based weekend is pretty small, it's 18 rating is a hindrance naturally but that's the gamble they took making it so violent for a very low budget.

For the record I still think it's good enough to make more than triple its budget back worldwide by the end of its run and secure a sequel. It wasn't equal to the hype that surrounding it form fanboys but it was a billion times better than the experience I had when I used to draw Dredd for 2000ad comics back when Stallone's version came out and all the staff and contributors like me all went to the press screening at Marble Arch.. Jesus you never heard so much disgruntled moans in your life!

@INSTANTJUSTICE - There you go again trying to make it personal. This is exactly what it says about me, it says I don't think $1.6 million bucks is anything to rave about for a weekend from ANY FILM, least of all a film about a comic character based on his home turf!

Dredd's been around longer than Harry Potter, most of us who were reading it when we were kids in the 70's still buy the comic today. A $1.6 million weekend doesn't say much about that fanbase and the wide appeal of Dredd and I don't find that something to shout about, NO!

If it doubles that taking next week or at least survives a less than %40 percent drop.. YOU'LL FIND ME SHOUTING! :-D

If it takes over $150 million world-wide in the next three weeks before the theatre/studio ticket margin split starts going against them.. YOU'LL FIND ME SHOUTING! :-D

When they announce a guaranteed sequel for the cinema, not some crummy straight to home video release.. YOU'LL FIND ME SHOUTING! :-D

Until then forgive me if I don't don the party hat for a $1.6 million weekend! A regular Sunday omnibus of Eastenders would make more than that if they decided to show it in the cinema!

"restricted" audiences. :P

Ceejay - 9/11/2012, 6:18 AM
@INSTANTJUSTICE - As far as bashing the film, I stand by most of what I said about it before seeing it. It just hasn't been the film to talk about since I saw both Dredd and Lawless in the same day and Lawless was by far the movie to "talk" about!

Dredd left me empty, it's a better film than the crap the Danny Canon bunch wrapped around Stallone's neck but that film was turned a movie star vehicle like every other Arnie and Stallone film of that period. This Dredd flick is about Dredd, it does a damn good job of delivering the essence of the character. The uniform has been my main peev but it worked better on screen than in pictures although still misses the point of the pristine regalia from the comic's origins. And for everything they did great about Dredd, their low budget laid flat with everything else.

1: The city was nothing like a city of the future concept designs like the comic but just another expansion of any city anywhere with a shanty townships like South Africa. No city built after a war should look exactly like the one before it, even the regular citizens clothing lacked any decent concept design other than stuff you can buy from Primark or TK-Max!

2: The entire Justice system was presented as an easy to corrupt establishment that are undermanned and barely clinging onto any level of control over their city. The same mistake Stallones version made to a lesser degree. The Judges are supposed to rule with a vice grip, they are supposed to be individual shining examples and beacons of justice the citizens fear beyond any criminal. Not some regular cop doing it for the money who can be bought off as long as he makes it through his shift! There was no reference to the hierarchy of the Judges establishment, no Chief Judge, no council of ruling judges, no SJS, no real display of the totalitarian system its supposed to be. What we got instead is a few notches above the world of Mad Max #1 before his family get killed.

I could go on about the sacrifices they made to the concept of the comic to make a violent action flick that can have enough appeal to make all the creditors who funded the project a nice enough profit. But it still managed to do the most important thing aside of all that, and deliver an accurate enough presentation of the character that's worthy of the comic's long history. So I hope it makes enough money to do more, but better! 6.5/10

@INSTANTJUSTICE - I'm not gonna waste time doing tit-for-tat with your skewed perspectives but lets correct some points before I move on to something more interesting.

I didn't say Dredd had the appeal of Harry Potter, you must learn to take statements in their entire context. I used Harry Potter and Twilight as examples of fan films box office trending, i.e they have big openings due to expectations from their fans above the regular movie-goer and then they enter a steep decline because most of the films target audience have seen it in that first week. This is why Dredd, who has his biggest fanbase here in the UK, making $1.6 million doesn't say much for it longevity at the box office regardless of rating!

You can read exactly what I though of the film from all my posts above, me not bashing it with every article that makes the front page is more to do with there being far more important things to occupy my interests than U-turning on my opinions of the movie. It's only a film and not a ground breaking experience of a movie at that so why would I feel compelled to continuously bash it like some sad fanboy protecting his childhood memories? I didn't even do that for Stallone's version and really sucked!

Dredd being number one amongst other mainstream movies is no big deal especially since its the one that has a near 30 year fanbase in the UK and the other films have zip! No films opening weekend is due to "good word of mouth", its due to marketing, reviews and general expectations or pre-existing fanbases. What it makes in following weeks DESPITE all those factors is due to good word of mouth.

Lastly, Dredd is not the first film to be made with sequels in mind so just because they state that when making the film does not make it a done deal. It all rests on the movies box office and merchandise sales that determines if those intentions get realized. For future reference when you read such things and think its a as good as destiny, think of Green Lantern, Superman Returns, Skyline, The sword and The Sorcerer, John Carter.. etc etc

I thought the film was brilliant, it served as a great way to introduce Dredd to the audience who haven't read any of the comicstrips.

The have done the right thing by grounding this story with just humans and nothing too overwhelming for people, save that for a sequal if the film does well, I for one am looking forward to more Dredd as they nailed him perfectly in this interpretation.

You people are missing the point here by fixating on the 1 million dollar gross.

This film cost 45 million to make. It made number #1 opening week and is generating great critical and popular reviews.

Positive word of mouth will spread into the states when it comes time to open it up there.

Those other films are considered tough competition?

I still don't consider an average of 7.1/10 being critically great reviews, but to each their own.
