JUSTICE LEAGUE: Box Office Analyst Believes WB Is Making THE SNYDER CUT To Keep Zack Snyder On Side

Many have questioned why WarnerMedia would be so willing to spend upwards of $70 million to finish Zack Snyder's Justice League, and one box office analyst has a compelling theory about what's happening!

When Zack Snyder's Justice League was officially announced, the belief was that all it would take to finish the filmmaker's four-hour assembly cut were some visual effects. Instead, over $70 million is being sunk into the project, with reshoots adding new scenes and characters as the film becomes a four-part event series instead of a one-off feature.

It's strange for a studio to acknowledge that the version of a film they released in theaters was a bomb, and spending more money to finish a project they already made a loss on is unheard of.

Observer has run a story questioning Warner Bros.'s decision to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, and Comscore's Paul Dergarabedian shared a compelling theory about the studio wanting to stay in business with Zack Snyder. That may come as a shock, but it's likely his decision to make Army of the Dead for Netflix (which has already spawned plans for a prequel and animated spinoff) has led to Warner Bros. realising that they don't want to lose the director to a rival streaming service.

"Everyone looks at studios as these monolithic financially motivated entities, but when you see something like this it tells you that more is going on," Dergarabedian explains. "There’s an X-factor to consider. 'Do we want this person to work elsewhere or do we want keep them in-house?'"

"If it doesn’t make hard financial or objective financial sense on its face, then there are subjective motivations and factors at play," he continues. "They want to be in the Zack Snyder business just like Warners wants to be in the Christopher Nolan business. It’s long-term strategy."

It's obviously far too soon to say whether Snyder's future with Warner Bros. will include more DC films.

I think he just still has friends at the studio, he's never been a real moneymaker for the studio since 300 though. Watchmen, Sucker Punch, Man of Steel, and BvS all performed below expectations. But at this point, I would much rather him do Green Lantern than Guggenheim and Graham-Smith, ugh.

@soberchimera - The Green Lantern show-runner and writers are such huge hacks. Ugh. Can't wait to see what CW kids they get for Scott, Gardner, Cruz and Baz.

@soberchimera - Man of Steel wasn't a flop though...not sure about the others mentioned.

@nikgrid - here you go, a quote from deadline

No one is saying man of steel flopped it just didn't do well enough based on its budget and expectations

@MyCoolYoung - Yeah, even though MoS was a reboot/origin movie, WB was still hoping that it could get a lot closer to what The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises had made for them, in profit. Especially with Nolan's name being attached to it.

Literally every single movie that he's done since 300 has been critically slammed and a financial under-performer. Every single one. He's not Nolan or Scorsese, he's just another hack with bad movies.
Also, this strategy doesn't even work considering Snyder literally set up shop at Netflix with his Army of the Dead universe.

@tmp3 - Man of Steel performed well at the box office. So well that they announced BvS a month after its release.

@MovieMonster - Man of Steel didn't hit the numbers that WB wanted it to hit

@tmp3 - I guess WB was expecting it to gross $1 billion. Snyder must be a good guy to work with if WB kept giving him projects despite the varying critical reviews and commercial performance of his films.

They brought him to do Watchmen because they were impressed with 300. For some reason, they let him do Legend of the Guardians and Sucker Punch after that. And Nolan hand-picked him to do Man of Steel. The Snyder Saga is an interesting one.

@tmp3 - That's not true Man of Steel did NOT fail financially.

@tmp3 - Neither did Rise of Skywalker or TLJ...but they are still financial hits.

@nikgrid - he said underperformed. Relative to its budget and expectations of the studio.
