BOX OFFICE: JUSTICE LEAGUE Slightly Exceeds Expectations But Suffers The Lowest DCEU Opening To Date
Moviegoers weren't "All In" this weekend because Justice League has failed to crack $100 million at the North American box office, but it's not all necessarily bad news for the DC Comics adaptation...
Justice League was initially estimated to make $110 million - $115 million at the North American box office but the DC Comics movie failed to even break through $100 million with a disappointing $96 million debut. That's still better than the numbers we were hearing yesterday but it's important to note that this is the lowest opening weekend for a film set in the DC Films Universe by a fairly wide margin.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice scored $166 million, Suicide Squad did $133.7 million, Man of Steel made a mighty $128.9 million, and Wonder Woman exceeded expectations with $103.3 million.
On the plus side, analysts believe Justice League could finish its domestic run with something along the lines of $265 million and that it could be boosted up to around the $700 million mark worldwide. That's a decent enough result but doesn't leave Warner Bros. with much of a profit after the studio spent $300 million on production costs alone so it might be far too soon to start hoping for a sequel.
So, yeah, Justice League's opening weekend was eclipsed by Thor: Ragnarok, something none of us expected this time last year. Did you watch the movie this weekend? Share your thoughts below.
