DC fans had some great news over the weekend with the announcement that A Wrinkle In Time director Ava DuVernay would helm Warner Bros. adaptation of The New Gods. Not only does this likely mean the cinematic introduction of Darkseid, but it also opens up a wealth of new stories for fans in the same way that Guardians of the Galaxy did for Marvel Studios.

DuVernay herself teased her involvement with the project before she was officially confirmed to direct, and it looks like she is very passionate about the source material. On her personal Instagram page, the director posted a shot of a page from The New Gods #1, first published in 1971.

While there are several prominent storylines to choose from, it'll probably be a welcome sign to many that DuVernay will go back to where it all started to mine her inspiration. Are there any storylines or elements you want to see included in the film? Let us know in the comments!

I've been thinking about diving into New Gods recently, and I guess this is as good an excuse as any to finally do so.

Also has anyone actually seen A Wrinkle In Time and if so what did you think? I've heard a lot from people who haven't seen it and seen some great to poor stuff on Twitter from people who have.

@FromACertainPOV - I saw it. My views are that the film looks beautiful, but there are some story things that just felt really rushed. It felt like a movie that should have been two movies. The ending was a bit of a let down. She is good at character development though.

@RancidBane - Interesting, it looked as though it would be a TOMORROWLAND situation for me wherein it connects with more on a concept and message / heart level than necessarily a clinical narrative one. I'm still in two minds about seeing it in theatres or waiting for the home release.

@FromACertainPOV - It a mess. A beatiful mess at times, but still very inconsistent.

@FromACertainPOV - I saw it over the weekend. I was all prepared to hate it, but actually I enjoyed it quite a bit. I will say that it deserved the bad reviews, because the camera work is horrible, for one, it's cheesy at times, and it rushes through and skips over a lot of things that needed to happen. All that being said though, I liked it, and now I want to read the book. My girlfriend, who read the book, also liked it and agrees with me about its faults, so all in all I'd say DuVernay maybe bit off a bit more than she could chew but ended up with a movie that I think a lot of children and adults will love.

@FromACertainPOV -
For New Gods, I'd say check out the current Mr. Miracle comic, also Walt Simonson's Orion, and Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers of Victory and Final Crisis.

Stay away from anything Jim Starlin wrote. His Kirby stories are trash.

@Battabing - NOPE! The New Gods to read is JACK KIRBY'S!

@FromACertainPOV - I did not like "A Wrinkle in Time" AT ALL. However, I loved Selma and her documentary "13th".

So I will say that I am cautiously optimistic about her directing and taking on New Gods. I really hope she does this story and these characters justice. Everything needs to be right for this movie, and from the outset things were not looking good for AWIT when she decided to cast Oprah, Reese, and Mindy as the witches/space beings from the books. Just a lot of terrible decisions were made on Ava's part from the beginning of that project.

@kirbyfan - Kind of shocking that you would say that.

Very glad this movie is possibly happening. It is such a great pack of characters. This could be DC's version of guardians. It could be a stand alone thing or if it us good can tie back in later on.

@RancidBane - I wouldn’t expect as much humor, but cosmic, yes.

@RolandD - I meant that comment more of connectivity to the rest of the universe. Loosely connected but not at first look.

So this one is actually happening, huh?

I want to read about the New Gods though. I checked out some information recently and it's a cool concept. Wonder how they'll pull it off, even with the DCEU's tone and impact.

I just wonder if this is a good idea. Every single week or month a new movie is announced and goes into development. It's tiring to keep up with. But I do hope that this one will be good. I'm curious about the New Gods from what I checked out. And I like Ava (even though it kinda seems like she just got this job because she said Big Barda was her favourite comic book character). Apparently with what I've heard about AWiT, it shouldn't inspire much confidence.

Excited about a New Gods movie, but not really because she's at the helm.

I just hope she stays faithful to Kirby's vision and doesn't turn this into something that is both distracting and bad.

KEEP STUDYING!!!

I'll believe it when i see it. Considering their track record, is there a good reason to believe that WB have a coherent vision for a New Gods films?
