WEREWOLF BY NIGHT First Social Media Reactions Praise Marvel Studios' First True Horror Story

The first social media reactions for Werewolf by Night have found their way online, and it sounds like the Marvel Studios Special Presentation will be the horror story MCU fans have been waiting for...

Werewolf by Night arrives on Disney+ on October 7, and looks set to serve as the first Marvel Studios Special Presentation. The next one will be The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and the hope is that these standalone stories will allow the MCU to tell some very different stories.

If these first reactions to Werewolf by Night are any indication, the zany, frightening, black-and-white special will deliver the horror story we've been waiting for.

We thought Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might fill that void, but it appears Disney+ is giving Marvel Studios the freedom to fully embrace different genres. Werewolf by Night sounds legitimately scary and creepy, while Man-Thing's MCU debut is also receiving a lot of praise (the character was teased in the first trailer for the special).

"On a dark and somber night, a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the foreboding Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader," reads the synopsis for the special.

"In a strange and macabre memorial to the leader's life, the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic—a hunt that will ultimately bring them face to face with a dangerous monster."

It's also been confirmed that Werewolf by Night will have a runtime of just under 53 minutes, hopefully giving us more than enough time to get to know these characters!

Wait, Marvel's first true horror story? What about MoM? Is this gonna be like Disney pumping out multiple of their first openly gay character?

@Origame - (random celebrity name) becomes first openly gay person in human history to make a cheese sandwich.

@Origame - How about if they kill 2 birds with 1 stone and combine them of Marvel's first openly gay horror story? They could call it "Marvel's First Whore Story". Kinda like an MCU version of "Rocky Horror Picture Show". I'd watch the hell out of it, but only if they have Goldblum's Grandmaster in the role of Frank N Furter. I think Jeff can pull it off. Let's do the "Timewarp" again Marvel!

I'm pretty excited to see it. Ready for something different.

If one of the characters makes a future appearance in a different MCU project, it would be interesting to maybe have them introduced in black and white or something then become colour. Or some black and white effect somehow.

@TheManWithoutFear - Now they actually had the balls to risk making something in B&W, let's have live action Spider-Man Noir for next Halloween, with period 1933 setting.

@Corruptor - That would need Sony's involvement which rules out a D+ release.

I'm not sure they would want to make a Spider-Man Noir big-screen movie. Would be interesting though.

@TheManWithoutFear - I'm really hoping this ushers in the return of Marvel "One-Shots" on Disney+.

15-20 minute shorts introducing us to new characters and catching us up with old.

@TheManWithoutFear - That's what im intrigued to see, I think the plan is for Werewolf By Night to show up again because Blade was meant to cameo at the end of this special due to reports but couldn't due to scheduling issues

This special is entirely practical effects too and i've heard the Werewolf could look a bit better, not sure how that comes across on-screen next to modern and more CG heavy projects

@thewanderer - I seem to recall reading somewhere that Marvel was bring those back at some point. Okay that was a lot of ambiguity there, but there was a point somewhere in there.

I hope we see something like this:

@DCfan84 -

Perhaps in one of the character's future appearances (still waiting on that Midnight Sons announcement), but most probably not in this one. It's been well reported by now that they're going full practical make-up with an old-school approach.

@DrReedRichards - Haven't read that much into it, so, thanks for that. I guess their going the Lon Chaney Jr. route huh?

@DCfan84 -

Bingo. I don't see them going any more modern than David Naughton's portrayal, at least not in this project. For future ones, we'll have to wait and see.
